  1. I used to get 30-35 in my Brat with it not running right but that was after I rebuilt the carb... I think it was a timing issue though. its was NICE! I wish the RX would get that:(
  2. yes I'd like to know as well since I no longer have a front ebrake because of using Impreza front suspension and brakes....
  3. yes, you can swap the entire drivetrain into it but you'll also need the whole engine wiring harness for it as well, plus the ECU. A lot of people have done swaps like this here on the board, myself being one of them. I swapped my automatic RX to a manual with not a lot of problems.
  4. this should be true since I have a turbo spyder torn apart in my garage and it looks relativly the same. Water passage has the inlet for the turbo whereas from what I saw, the NA doesn't have, go figure. Other then that, they looked the same...
  5. sorry, I've never torn a Subaru engine down that far and I couldn't quite remember how many there were. I'm used to Chevys which have 5...
  6. yes like Ross said. The car will put itself into a "Safe Mode" or a "Limp Mode" so it is able to get it to a servicable area. The MAF is like any other sensor. If the sensor goes south, the computer will substitute a variable into it by seeing what the other sensors are doing. Kind of the "Smart" thing for it to do. It'll run with no MAF, just don't expect it to go above like 3500rpm and make hardly any power.
  7. Yes and here's why I think this as well... When you have a rod knock, there's only ONE bearing supporting the rod so when it starts to knock, it will most likely knock all the time. I HAVE however heard of rod knocks coming and going but it is a very rare case when that happens. The reason why I lean more toward a main bearing is because the crank is being supported by not one but 5 main bearings, so the load created on the crank is evenly distributed. Also main bearings have a history of coming and going vs. a rod bearing which come and kaput, its dead...
  8. I like the idea! It would be able to get some ideas out to new people joining the board to see what everyone else has done, and also a chance for veterans to show off what they have done.
  9. and since mine doesn't run, I guess I'm no help either;) Just kidding Kelly...
  10. *sniff* I miss my wagon... I know someone on this board will give it a good home, even if I have to fly back to Oregon to get it.. then put it next to my '79;)
  11. I used to work in a lube shop when I was in Oregon. As far as Jiffy Lube, I would never even go there if my life depended on it. Just because they're cheap, doesn't mean they're good. They like to hire people with no experience and sometimes, they will hire them if they can say two words of english. If I was to ever tak my car to a lube shop in the PNW, it would have to be Oil Can Henry's which is where I used to work. A little more money then the competitors BUT they have a guarantee with it as well. I can't recall how many dissatisfied customers from Jiffy Lube came to us and drove out with a smile after they're visit with us.
  12. I had it all welded up, made it sound very mean. The glasspack brand was a Blue Streak IIRC with a giant chrome tip on it. I got it from a friend who had it on an '86 Scirocco and he gave it to me for helping him with some work. I was gonna put it in my diesel rabbit but decided the Brat needed a new muffler... Then some crackhead stole it off of my car in the middle of the night (cut it with an exhaust cutter) and ran off...
  13. Well, here's the article I made for the USRM about the disty conversion... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=38 Also some pics of the Brat... starting with when I got it to its current stage... http://community.webshots.com/album/302432023YUcDSD There's a couple engine shots in there and one still had the origiinal engine in it. This one is labeled for the disty conversion. As for a Weber, a conversion kit for an EA81 will work for it as well. It worked pretty nicely but I had to fab up my own throttle linkage and I got it to work very good.
  14. I wish mine was that close. How long have you been working on it Shawn? I've been at it for close to a year since I put the RX under the knife. Hopefully I'll get the last of the intake parts and see if I can't get her to start as well. I hate waiting for stuff, bugs the crap outta me... Maybe you should shoot a small vid of it firing to life! I just seen the part about it going under right after WCSS3... wow what a long time...
  15. well actually, my Brat was RWD when I got it, I just slammed it and I could do posi burnouts for days. 75subie is right about all of the upgrades. I did the 2wd disty swap, put Accel plugwires on it, an Accel Superstock coil which isn't the greatest but if you mount it vertical instead of horizontal like it is stock, you won't have a problem. I also got ahold of a very rare JDM high compression EA71 from a friend and put that in there. I then added a Holley 5200 which is a Weber knockoff, an afternarket exhaust which was a good brand of cherry bomb and some straight pipe, new clutch and some EA82 steels with 185/70R13's on there. I have pics of the engine and the car if you'd like to take a gander. Once I had dropped that engine combo in there, it felt much more powerful then the original EA71 that was in it. I'm guessing it was running over 100hp. The sad thing though is I could never get it to run right. It still ran rich and had some timing issues but it sure was a fun little car.
  16. cool Tex, glad to hear its running with just a few problems now instead of a whole crap load. Now I gotta finish getting my parts for my intake, plumb in the IC and hopefully get her to fire up once again... BTW, I'm jealous, I miss mine:(
  17. a guy in Oregon who runs a wrecking yeard has a 360 tow truck and he drives it in parades since its totally restored. Other then that, he doesn't drive it since he's a pretty big fella...
  18. I got a spacer in my toolbox if you need it. Came off my '79 wagon... I can throw it in a box and send it to ya if you'd like...
  19. and hopefully I'll have the RX down there running and seeing what kind of quarter miles times I get;);)
  20. I have a feeling I know what you're planning Jason...
  21. You should be able to swap the DOJs from a non turbo EA axle to the EJ axle to get the no turbo d/r
  22. maybe we'll have to get together and have another meet here before Xmas if possible. Then I should have my RX running and on the road.
  23. There have been a few people to do that actually. As for the clutch, WJM said he could get me one and I told him to make it happen and it happened!
  24. you'd have to get an EA82 flywheel... Oh and I have the same clutch as WJM, just haven't gotten the car back on the road since I installed it...
  25. There's a lot on a bunch of these mods. Use the search function and a lot of these questions you have about the mods listed above will be answered and those that aren't, just ask! Basically adding a better exhaust, ignition and intake on it. Search around, you'll find stuff here on the board Its quite simple actually especially when you have a friend to help you out. Any d/r 4wd 5-speed will bolt in and they were put in EA82 bodystyle cars from '85-'94 IIRC Again, use the search function or check out the Retrofitting forum located here. A lot of people have been doing this swap for about a year, year and a half now. Keep up on the routine maintanence. She'll live for quite some time. These cars have been known to get about a half million miles on them, but mostly around 300,000 miles. Again, there's the search function or check out the Meet-n-Greet forum. There should be quite a few in the PNW. Not so much as rally clubs but there is the Hatch Patrol club and a few others I can't think of right now. They do more wheeling type of stuff but sure, you can rally with them.
