'85 RX motor with no knock sensor?
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well I'm using everything else from my '89 but the shortblock and the heads. I'm going to be using the stock intake manifold until I have the money to get a full spider setup for it. Well I'm gonna go take mine out and see if it fits now... -
I got the motor I've been waiting for from Stan and I decided that now would be a good time to start working on it. So I drug it over to in front of the car to pull the heads off and whatnot when I noticed, there was no knock sensor next to the PCV tube near the bellhousing. Does it just like screw into the hole thats there or do I have to tap the threads on in? I can't really tell since theres a bunch of dirt and crap in the hole to see if there are threads in it. So... can I take the knock sensor out of my motor from my '89 RX and just thread it into the hole? On a side note, I got the motor today obviously and I also got a set of gen 2 heads in the mail today as well. Next will be the stage 2 clutch kit and the TWE header:D

yes it will be the same color as the rest of the interior... or the rest of the interior will be the same color as it. I'm still kinda undecided...

Oil Cooler adapters sold out! *New Order*
Caboobaroo replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
cool so I gotta call him about two things now... -
I recently got a 3 gauge a-pillar pod from a guy over on NASIOC for 20 bucks shipped. My goal was to modify it to fit into the RX since I need something to hold all of my wonderful gauges in a nice visible spot. Well it took me about a half hour, a hacksaw, and a file and I got it mounted all nicely in the car. Almost looks like it came this way from Autometer! http://community.webshots.com/photo/302403464/310448772MeSsZX What do y'all think? Yes I know, the dash is still torn apart because I'm still trying to get the rest of the wiring from the automatic out of there:rolleyes:

sounds like its time to rebuild the front end of the car. PM me for some details on how to save money and put better brakes/balljoints/control arms in the front -
the ones in my wagon sucked as well. I had like a half of a line heat up. Never had any problems with my Brat though;) Oh wait it has no defroster!

I need a sticker like that LOL -
so just spray that stuff into the bottom end of the motor to clean it out? Would that effect the bottom end in any way?

My girlfriend and her family just left this morning to go back to Pennsylvania because a family member is dying of cancer. Now I need some help because I want to make sure they don't get caught in another storm like they did the same time last year. They're going to be heading from Wyoming to Pennsylvania and be passing through these states... Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana. So basically if some bad weather comes within the next couple weeks, PLEASE post it so I can let her know before they get stuck in Iowa again

so the motor I pulled from my RX has about 208k on it. Its been pretty abused in its lifetime but now its time to get her going good once again. So I pulled the engine what seems like years ago (actually a couple months) and when I pulled the oil pan off, it had a lot of sludge build up inside of it. Its also got some on the pickup screen for the oil pump which I can't get off as well. So how do I go along and clean this crap out of my motor? I decided that this motor is going to go back into the car and my other one will be the one that gets built to hell and back. I don't have any speciality tools to pull the block apart and stuff like that. Just looking for the best way to do it with the shortblock still together...

TOD?? for a few seconds at warmup
Caboobaroo replied to erikvr's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, check to see if you have any oil leaks. Main places to check are the valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, front/rear crank seal and cam seals. Funny thing is my RX never had the TOD when it ran. It was abused pretty badly and had some oil leaks but no TOD... -

RWD Conversion - for the long term?
Caboobaroo replied to X35 Performance's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I ran my '78 Brat in RWD for about 4 months or so. Handled it just fine and it made for the awesome burnouts. I'm picking up an XT6 with the AWD 5MT in it. If you want it, come and get it plus like 50 bucks... -
dude, I got an RX tranny from an '85. Part time 4wd dual range turbo tranny if you need it. I don't since I was able to get the full time for my RX. Lemme know, its just sittin there. If ya want, I live over on Ord street just east of the elementary school:D

are you looking at getting an RX bodykit for it or some other aftermarket bodykit? The RX bodykit is an easy fit BUT the back 3 pieces have to be modified to fit. You'd end up only using 2 of the 3 pieces that go around the rear bumper since the 3-door and the wagon rearends are different. The rest is pretty easy. Self tapping sheet metal screws work great for the sideskirts and the fron airdam would have to have 6 holes (3 in each fender) drilled to bolt on unless you can find stock RX fenders with the holes drilled from the factory. As for aftermarket.... well there IS no aftermarket from what we have found.... yet...

Sweet82 has built that same buggy. Its friggin pimp. Granted, it doesn't have the best ground clearance in the front but I bet it turns better then any lifted soob... He was turning it on a sidewalk corner with ease!

"Rattle" in 87 GL
Caboobaroo replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well if it was your tranny, you'd see signs of wear in the gear oil and maybe some metal shavings on the dipstick if it had something to do with it breaking a syncro or something. I doubt highly its the tranny. It sounds a lot like the exhaust having some issues like yes, the honeycomb in the cat coming loose. I know the Legacy Andrew had, had a bad resonator in it so it had a bad rattling sound to it as well...
