this diff clearance owns all
Caboobaroo replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
heeeeyyyy my Brat had about that on the rear diff clearance....:D:D It didn't even have any expensive coilovers in it or nothing... like literally NOTHING:D -
yes it will. Actually if you want, the whole vented brake assembly minus hub will bolt right onto the hub of the '78. This is the same setup as my '79 4wd wagon I have BUT I also used the EA81 control arms and hubs. I had to make a custom stabilizer bar for it but that wasn't too hard since I made it exactly like the EA71 stabilizer bars, same length but different thread pitch at the end. If you need help or have more questions, just PM me about it and I can help you step through it. If you do go with the vented rotors, it'll be a lot easier to get parts for them, might be a little cheaper AND, you'll have more braking power as well.

WRC goes back to its roots...

I seen that same spoiler on ebay a couple days ago, made by Prodrive in England. They wanted an @$$ load of money for it... So does this mean that the RX is getting some new rims Will? -
EA82T + Turbo Lag = teh SUCK!
Caboobaroo replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no MINE'S a turb Brian. Its the biggest turd ever... well maybe thats because it has no motor:D just get a MBC and set your boost to about 9psi. Andrew did that in his turbowagon (well he put a couple holes in the wastegate line:rolleyes: ) and it made it more fun. -
me needy the whole bodykit from it. I got cash, like 100 bucks, maybe more.. plus parts I could trade as well (gen 1 Brat and some RX parts)
-
I know this already but I don't have the know-how for the MS&EDIS setup which is why I'm going to see if someone like oddcomp will help me build one for my car.
-
well I am planning on going with MS and EDIS but the short demand of money I do have right now is kinda slim, even though I'm buying performance parts out the wazoo. The MS and EDIS will come sonner then later but will be one of the last things I get since I am Mr. 'Computer Illiterate'....

I recently picked up an AEM cold air intake for my RX and it has a spot for the MAF sensor to bolt into a hole on it, not be part of the intake setup like the RX. So I was wondering, would I be able to use a WRX MAF sensor in my RX and just change the connection on the harness and adapt it into the stock RX harness? If someone is kinda confused, I can get a couple pics of the two parts I'm talking about...

Driving an AT like a MT
Caboobaroo replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I raced a '71 Chevy Vega GT with a BBC 468ci with 958fwhp. It had a TH400 behind it but it was built for racing. Had to shift it with the manual valvebodies in it but like Morgan said, I wouldn't risk it with a Subaru tranny unless I had a spare to throw in it. Even though I raced my mom's minivan a 'couple' times vs. Hondas and smoked them all day long:D -
ok the plugs are new and so when I pulled one to get it timed, it was black from running rich and also looked to be a bit hot (not too bad but just a little). Since I've replaced the major components I think it might be the fuel system now. I have my '78 Brat fuel pump on it since its basically the same pump, and the carb was rebuilt about 100 miles ago. I think something might have gotten sucked up into the carb and so it'll fire and run for about a second and die. It'll keep doing it like its not getting enough fuel but I can smell the gas and I also moved the throttle cable and I heard fuel being squirted into the carb...

Ok so here's from my other thread on the board a couple weeks ago on this topic... Ok so this morning at 2:00 am, Josh and I (he owns the wagon) were coming home for lunch and had a little bit of fun in the snow before we left... anyways, so we get about 1/4 mile from work heading home and it starts to die like the rpms started to drop and so I downshifted and let the clutch out. It did it again but then it kicked back up like it was going to run but then continued to drop rpms. I got it in a parking lot and it seemed like it was getting fuel since I could smell it but would just crank over. It almost started once but that was a lost cause... The car is an '81 2wd wagon, '86 EA81 with the '81 carb and whatnot (feedback carb), and is all stock BUT I did throw my Accel Superstock coil from my Brat into it. I think the coil finally died so it lost spark. I'm gonna try and put the stock coil back in it but is there anything else I should do? Oh and there about 4" of snow on the ground too and below freezing temps so no "side-of-the-road" repairs:rolleyes: So to this day, here's what I've replaced... replaced the Accel Superstock Coil back to the original replaced the disty with an '83-newer 2wd disty since I thought the old one might have a bad ignition module in it found a couple more connections that were unplugged and plugged them back in So now if you let it sit for 20 minutes, it'll kick back over and come to life for a couple minutes and then it'll die again. Smells like its running rich but I tuned it up when it was running. Anyone got any ideas? Couid it be the feedback carb computer being fried? HELP!!!

How to bring an 80 brat back to life
Caboobaroo replied to superu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well we learn something new everyday. For some reason my brain was telling me it wasn't right that they made the EA81 Brat in '80 but something else was telling me they did. Well you should still drop an EA81 with a d/r 4-speed into it;) -
yes, oh the great knowledge we gen 1 owners can put together:D

soon to be one less subaru in this world :[

time to call on Miles Fox. He might be able to help you since he is like the Subaru king in that area... -

with the stock 1600, a rebuilt carb, and an electronic disty swap from an '83-newer EA81, I was getting 30mpg around town with my foot in it doing RWD burnouts:D With the JDM high compression 1600 and Holley 5200 with major issues, I had lots more power but I was getting maybe 10mpg:rolleyes: -
Whats the purpose of oil catch cans? I was looking up stuff on ebay and I seen them for WRXs and other turbo'd cars so whats the deal with them?
-
I think I'm going to get my TD04 done up by them eventually. Get the "Monster TD04" job..... woo buddy!

MMmmm new turbo and HKS downpipe
Caboobaroo replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got a totally stock WRX downpipe right now with less then 500 miles on it and I got it for cheap. I'm going to be saving up for the Crucial Racing divorced wastegate downpipe once the motor is back together and running... MWAHAHAHAHA -
How to bring an 80 brat back to life
Caboobaroo replied to superu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ehh better check yourself there buddy. The Brats and all gen I stage II cars can fit an EA81 into them and its a bolt in precedure. Its like putting an EA71 into it. Also some '80 Brats and most '81 Brats came with the EA81 and a d/r tranny as well... The only problem with putting an EA81 into a car that wasn't equiped with one is you're gonna need different shift linkage unless you can get one from the mentioned Brats above. Also there's a gentleman on the board who makes the shift linkage in a kit and sells them for a decent price. I'm going to be building an EA81TT for my '79 4wd wagon..... mwahahaha -
New toy for my RX.
Caboobaroo replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am installing my older Clarion deck into my RX. Its the DX515 model but it sure bumps hard. I got it for free for fixing this chick's Volvo turbosedan and since she didn't want to spend an arm and a leg to install it, she gave it to me. I also had a nice old Sony tape deck in my Brat but I had the 10 disc CD changer in the dash where the glovebox was. People would look at the deck and laught because the CD changer blended right into the back trim on the dash.... talk about anti-theft:D -
MMmmm new turbo and HKS downpipe
Caboobaroo replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
basically the turbo should bolt onto the stock dp BUT the back stud needs some loving. The two front studs line up but the back on needs to be moved back about 1/2" or so. -
well my heads appear to have cracks in them BUT there's no sign of coolant spots in the exhaust ports. Even weirder is that teh cracks, instead of being in the center of the exhaust port, are off to one side, I believe closest to the engine. I'll have to see into that magnaflux crack checker stuff, might come in handy:)

there's a yard here in Laramie where I can basically buy any full Subaru for 150 bucks. I paid 150 bucks for my '89 RX and it had a 'bad motor' which it kinda did but not too hard to fix either. I'm gonna see about getting a XT6 which I think has no motor but full 5-lug and the 14" motion alloys WITH good tires. Also has a manual FT4wd s/r 5-speed in it as well but the interior is kinda trashed:rolleyes:
