Brat & XT6 CarbonFiber Hoods
Caboobaroo replied to Gravityman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
lol yeah what about us gen 1 guys with turbos? Even though I don't have one:-p ..... with a turbo I mean! I'd pay 300 for a cf hood with a spot to bolt a stock WRX hoodscoop to for a RX/wagon/sedan -
yeah well mine doesn't run yet:D But here's a list of mods happening to the car right now... WRX TMIC WRX TD04 turbo TWE uppipe stock WRX downpipe with less then 500 miles on it full catless 3" exhaust with ricer muffler (after I get a different dp) Delta 260 cams (gotta get Will some parts;)) gen 3 heads spider intake XT6 throttle body AEM 3" CAI (modified of course) GReddy Profec B-Spec II EBC swappin in the manual RX tranny (I had the stupid 4EAT but now I got the manual) lightened XT6 flywheel new oil pump new waterpump timing belts and tensioners full reseal with OEM headgaskets and then there's the category of "when money allows it"... 3.90 front diff (there's a shop in Denver that can do it for me) 3.90 LSD Crucial Racing divorced wastegate downpipe MS&EDIS adjustable cam sprockets convert to head studs instead of headbolts full port-n-polish reworkin the heads (will be using the gen 3 heads mentioned above) port matching intake and exhaust ports on heads In my first category, I have about 3/4 of the parts, just need to get the 5-lug conversion done so I can pack up some parts and ship them to Will and then spend a couple more paychecks and get the rest of what I'll be needing. I've got the EBC ready with my name on it, just gotta send the guy 200 bucks for it:eek: I'll be doing a bunch of write-ups in the near future on installing these parts and whatnot so just keep your eyes open when I let everyone know:D

umm if they're the part I'm thinking of, I want a set since mine are crap but would like some pics! I'll send ya some money Will and you can toss them aside with those other parts when I can get around to putting the whole car up on jackstands to get the rest of your parts off:) -

'81 2wd wagon problems
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
oh I forgot to add this motor came from an '86 Brat and has the '81 manifold and carb on it. I don't think it's the AIS system cause I found out last night before I went to work, that it really wasn't timed with a light, just by ear..... I hate it when people lie to me... -
Brat & XT6 CarbonFiber Hoods
Caboobaroo replied to Gravityman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I like the idea of having a hood I can just bolt my hoodscoop to instead of trying to mold it into a stock hood and blah blah blah.... It would have to sit on the hood like the hoodscoop would on a WRX where its flush with the hood line but it is just bolted on:) I think that would keep the cost down quite a bit and I would pay about 300 for a cf hood for my RX -
Aesthetic Opinions Please....
Caboobaroo replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thats right Glenn. I did some nifty drawings when I still lived in Oregon by hand and all I have to say is that they look very similar to the second pic of yours garner. If McBrat still has it, he has a pic of my gen 1 front spoiler I bought from him and it looks very much the same as the one in the pic. Maybe he still has a pic of it somewhere..... -
so my buddy Josh got this '81 2wd wagon from our buddy here on the board and it has some issues. First off, when it gets to operating temp, it doesn't want to idle. Now the carb was rebuilt so maybe its a tuning issue or something. Problem 2, it backfired really badly when the motor is revving down, also me thinky its a tuning issue even though it was timed with a timing light so I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated so lemme know guys:D

spider intake throttle body question
Caboobaroo replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
miles, you were right the first time. The reason behind the collant line running through the TB is to prevent icing in the TB. A lot of people that I know on different forums like my 3 generation Camaro/Firebird forum just bypass it since it has no function unless its like in Alaska or someplace REALLY cold (hmm maybe like here?) Just bypass it and it should help give a little bit of performance since the hot coolant heats up the air going into the motor thus bringing the temp of the air up giving you less performance... -
1989 RX.... 208k on the ticker... goin through the motor right now but it has blown headgaskets and a bad oil return line from the turbo so it would leave puddles for me... oh and I also had a river coming out of my exhaust as well:rolleyes: my '79 4wd wagon... has about 275k on it (I confrimed it with the DMV since they have records of 75K and 175K) BUT had a JDM EA71 swapped into it with a rod knock currently...

Caboobaroo replied to RavenTBK's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
umm I can get some of those parts for ya for just the cost of shipping plus a little extra for my time:D I have access to the driveshaft, rear-end, possibly and alternator and possibly axles as well... lemme know if I can help:D Might even be a little cheaper then the j/ys in the PNW -
it'll take about 3 days to fully strip one... I stripped mine for a complete overhaulin project....

ea82 head gasket stuff
Caboobaroo replied to beastbikes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got my headgaskets form the dealership and had excellent service from them which is different then the crap I used to put up with in Oregon from them. The best to go with are OEM headgaskets, not like Napa or Checkers of any crap like that. The website Caleb posted is probably your best bet on price and bein the best.... -
just find the ultra rare JDM high compression motor from the GF coupes and drop it in.... had one in mine and it would outrun Hondas and Toyotas and in RWD, would do some wicked burnouts I've ever seen a 4 cylinder do! Basically you can drop a Weber using an EA81 adapter for it on there and I know for about 120 bucks , maybe more, you can get a cam done by Delta cams... Also upgrade the disty to an electronic 2wd EA81 disty. I did a write-up on it here ( http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=38 ). Accell plug wires, Accell Super Coil, and of course overall maitanence stuff like NGK plugs, new fuel filter, etc.

How can you tell a Carter-Weber from a Hitachi?
Caboobaroo replied to thedoctor's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
one thing about the Carter-Webers is that trying to get parts from anywhere including the dealership won't happen! I needed a part for the one on my '83 hatchback and the only place I found one was at a hobby store. It sucked but I ended up getting rid of the car since it was a giant rust bucket and ran like crap. Traded it straight across for my '79 4wd wagon:D Gen 1's ROCK!!! -
Holy Canoly my old car is on ebay!
Caboobaroo replied to Hondasucks's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

Progress/Teasers ;) (56K - Sammich time)
Caboobaroo replied to calebz's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
so are you going to do a write-up on what year coilovers to get and how to install them for the USRM? It would be good for us who are looking at doing a swap like this;) -
ok I don't have long distance on my stupid phone so here's what I need the prices on from ya Will since I'm going to need both of them soon... valve spring compressor wrist pin remover slide hammer thingy if you can find out tomorrow or something, let me know! I get paid tomorrow and I basically have all the parts I need to put my motor back together but I am going to install new valve seals on my heads.

Caboobaroo replied to All_talk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

Progress/Teasers ;) (56K - Sammich time)
Caboobaroo replied to calebz's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
dang that looks a lot better! What all was involved in using the WRX coilovers? Was it just a bolt in mod or did you have to mod the strut to make it all work together? -
I need a wiring diagram!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I totally forgot about the search function. I guess whats what happens when your brain doesn't work after you've been up for 24 hours... now time for sleep and then 2 days off! -
Consequences for False Plates
Caboobaroo replied to Krag's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
when I still lived in Oregon, my Brat when I picked it up didn't have any plates on it but I needed a car to drive. SO! I put the plates from my '78 wagon on it and they never said anything about it unless I said something when I got pulled over. I just told them that I took my Brat body and put it on the wagon chassis..... but they probably wouldn't think its unibody! -
I am in need of a wiring diagram for my '89 RX. Mostly I need the ignition wiring diagram so I can connect my turbo timer up. Anyone got one they can scan or an online one they know of?
