Rear discs on a gen 1?
Caboobaroo replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have never completed the swap and never took pics of my progress since I was doing this on my '79 wagon. Sorry:( -
mwahahahaha I also found out that a few cars down the row, well more like 20, there's a complete XT6 also. So I'm going to see if the guy will take 100 bucks for everything to do a 5-lug conversion on it as well. Thats a far cry from Hondasuck's 250 for HIS 5-lug conversion.....w00t!!! Now I just need the guy from the yard to call me and tell me where I want it delivered:D

Rear discs on a gen 1?
Caboobaroo replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well I was the one that started that thread but I do not know where it went either but I haven't looked. You will need the appropriate stuff off of the donor car just like doing a conversion on any EA81 or EA82.. 4wd with 4wd, 2wd with 2wd, you get the picture. Everything will bolt on however you will need to do a little bit of modifying to get it to be a bolt on, kinda like a TWE header:lol:. You will need to grind a spot down a little on the rear control arm in order to get one of the caliper bolts in. The other is grinding the backing plate down to make it fit but that is one of those "grind, see if it fits, grind some more" I hope this helps:D -
New RX stickers? Where to get..
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I noticed that the sticker on the driver side says "Full Time 4WD RX" not the other way around where as the back has the "RX Full Time 4WD".... that and I also have the "Subaru" on the back as well. SO Mick, how much would these cost in order to do the whole car? Just so I can get a rough estimate:) -
I don't need no stinking TWE header!!!!

if you want to build a couple of these, I can swing some cash your way depending on me getting this RX.... -

you mean this one? http://usmb.net/gallery/album75/1982_e Its a 1982 hatchback, 4wd, manual 4-speed, dual range hi-low 4wd. Its probably a GL model which was the highest model line for hatchbacks. -

saweet!!! I'm still waiting for the j/y to call and tell me that it has good paperwork and that they need to know where to drop the car off at but after that, I'll get more pics of them and dimensions!!! -

ok there is a difference when we refer to certain Subarus. The hatchback was made from 81 all the way up until 88 or 89, I can't remember. Then there is the three-door which is the next body style and they were made from 87.5-89 I believe. Some of the three-doors were also known as RXs and they had a bunch of extra upgrades to them, one being turbo. The hatchback you're looking for is also known as the EA81 bodystyle, which refers to the motor in it. The three-door has an EA82 motor in it which unlike the EA81, has OHC instead of OHV. I hope this helps you out a little bit. Oh and the 4wd hatchbacks are wheelin machines!!!! -
Well now I'm planning on repainting this RX black since the paint is kinda..ehhh nasty but the stickers are faded and I was wondering if there was any way I could get some new ones like NOS or something. Anone know? Corky?

This mod is GREAT especially when your pocketbook is low and you need some new balljoints. This happened to me:) So when I called around and al of the part stores said it would be roughly 30-36 bucks a piece for balljoints I went YIKES!! So I decided to try and retrofit some newer, cheaper stuff into my wagon. You wonder HOW much cheaper? Well I was getting the lifetime warrenty balljoints from a store for an EA81 with vented rotors for 16 bucks a piece. A far cry from 36. Everything will bolt into a stage 2, gen 1 car EXCEPT for the stabilizer bar coming off of the control arm. Now whats nice is that the stabilizer bar will unbolt from the EA81 control arm but the stabilizer bar on the EA71 control arm is welded on. So how did I overcome this? I went to my former highschool shop teacher and asked him if I could use the metal lathe so I could make these parts. He said sure and the metal was right there. All I did was make new stabilizer bars that were the same dimesions as the old EA71 bars. I used slightly bigger roundstock to make it stronger but the length and the dimension of the end where the threads are, are just the same as stock. Granted I didn't use a metric thread but I used a more common standard thread which works great since the nuts and washers are soooo much cheaper. Now all I need to do is et new polyurathene bushings for them. Now here are some pics: http://usmb.net/gallery/album211/AUT_3206 http://usmb.net/gallery/album211/AUT_3207 http://usmb.net/gallery/album211/AUT_3208 http://usmb.net/gallery/album211/AUT_3236 http://usmb.net/gallery/album211/AUT_3237 http://usmb.net/gallery/album211/AUT_3238 I also have more pics but I wll have to find them and upload them. They show the final prouct on the control arms. This mod was done because the parts weren't just cheaper, but it will also improve braking performace as well:D

dude, what kind or rims are those? I will definatly be looking for a set for this RX since right down the row is an XT6 with everything to do a 5-lug conversion on it:D Pretty pimpin!! Oh and when you start getting the coilovers set out right, let me know and give a nice write up on it and I can put it into the USRM:)

Differences, JDM vs. American EA82T?
Caboobaroo posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok so all of you guys who have bought JDM motors that have little miles on them, where'd you find them and for how much? Also for those who might know, what are some differences between the American EA82T and the JDM spec EA82T? Like are the internals different? Different cams? I'm wondering since I might need a new motor for this RX since this one has 209k on the ticker and the guy says it has a "bad motor". If it doesn't need a new motor, then I want to get one that I can build the living poo out of:brow: -
Im in a WORLD OF HURT... My 88 XT died
Caboobaroo replied to Disbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
maybe some hints on the symptoms of this car and we can elp ya out better;) If it is a crack in the exhaust port like Miles talks about,it will run fine like he said but it will also puf white smoke out of the exhaust and the radiator will also smell of exhaust when the cap is removed and running. If its a blown head gasket, it will do the same but it will also make it run really rough I believe. If its blown into the oil passage, it will also run fine but you'll have a nice batch of chocolate milk in your crankcase. -

Quattro San lives! (Updated as of 11/2/2004)
Caboobaroo replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
and from what I've heard, Subaru had WWU design the EJ22 motor. Good school from what I've heard but I can't afford it right now....maybe when I'm done with WyoTech:D -
So I was wondering what kinds of differences there were in axles. What is the spline count on them? 4EAT 4wd/2wd- turbo/nonturbo 3EAT 4wd/2wd- turbo/nonturbo 5-speed 2wd - turbo/nonturbo D/R 5-speed 4wd- turbo/nonturbo PB 5-speed 4wd- turbo/nonturbo FT4WD D/R (RX) - turbo FT4WD S/R - turbo/nonturbo I can't think of any other tranny/motor combos but if I forgot one, lemme know and possibly the years these trannies were offeres and which cars...might helps some other people out as well:D
-
well it all depends. I think a d/r 5-speed would go for about 100-150 bucks MAYBE... the engine will be a little more but make sure you get the fuel pump, lines, ECU, wiring harness, and the motor. You might want to research all the parts you're gonna need for it first because its not just the motor and the tranny, there's a lot more to it. I would myself look for a wrecked Legacy for the conversion...
-
on another note, I have the 150 bucks for the guy and on Monday I'm going to put 100 down so he can start getting title and the paperwork taken care of and then once he has it done, I'll give him the last 50 snd hopefully I can have it within the next couple weeks:D But I gotta hurry since its now currently snowing here and 1) don't have a car to get home in from work so I have to ride my road bike and 2) I don't want a lot of snow getting into the rear due to the busted windows:-\

Gotta have some Old School Representation....
Caboobaroo replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah I get people asking me why I would ever wanna build my Brat...well to tell ya the truth, who has built a mean on-road Brat here in the states? I know about all the STi Brats or the "LegaBrat" but thats still not minitrucked. Who else has come up with the crazy idea to put a Nissan frame, GM 2.8L, 5-speed, etc. etc. etc. in a Brat and make it run 11 seconds? ME!!!! *see sig for details* -
ok so now I'm starting to complie a list of things and this is what I have so far... Motor mods: WRX top mount intercooler ~$100 TWE 2.5" exhaust (up pipe and down pipe, catless?) ~ $600 TD04 turbo from WRX (direct bolt onto TWE exhaust) ~ $100 Delta cams ~ $120 carbed shortblock 87.5 - newer XT spider intake XT6 throttle body (WJM, wanna enlighten us on that swap?) gen 3 heads, port-n-polish (Miles wanna discuss where to p&p them maybe with some pics?) lightened XT6 flywheel lightened crank pulley (garner, wanna go into detail about this mod?) port matching - I will cover this more when I do the write-up manual boost controller - Caleb? turbo timer - also Caleb? Blow off valve - I know there's a few of you here with them;) Cold air intake - SubaruTex? Megasquirt & EDIS - oddcomp? 5-lug conversion - myself and some of the others who have done it:D brake and suspension upgrades to both stock EA82 and XT6 - WJM and Subaru_Styles oil cooler - not a clue who has done it but maybe someone has:) gutting cats - I've done the midpipe but who has done the downpipe? mechanical fan removal - I can discuss this since I've done it like a million times XT6 alternator swap - Skip? GM alternator swap - oddcomp? A/C removal - anyone besides me? Fuel system mods - SubaruTex? Accel Coil replacement - anyone? Grounding kits - anyone? Installing an RX bodykit on a sedan, wagon or 3-door - myself RX mirrors? <-- is lost? hoodscoops - anyone who has done them, gimme your advice:) cutting the bottom of the airbox - I know a lot of people have done this s please share on how you went along and did it ok I know there's more that can be added so please, add anything you'd like to it and if you've done one of the mods listed even though I didn't put your name next to it, I was tryin to remember some of the people that I have heard of doing these mods but please add away! I'm not trying to keep anyone's advice for these mods away, it'll actualy give people different ways to try some of these things!!!
-
well the list is going to be nice but unfortunatly, no one has really described what they did, just listed off a few things and not any sort or price range either. I'm going to make seperate categories from the "free" upgrades to the most expensive types of upgrades. Examples are cutting the airbx and gutting the cat which are free upgrades to installing an intercool which will run in the neighborhood of 100 bucks for a WRX top style....does this help a little? Oh and for you guys such as Skip, oddcomp and many other people who have done lots and lots and lots of mods to their car, you can make your own write-up and I will incorperate it into the post in the USRM. Just PM it to me guys if its a nice long list of mods which are complicated:)

I've cooked frozen burritos on the intake, exhaust and the block of my buddies Samuri one morning after we stayed up and watched the sun rise....
