Vacuum problems/Disty Question (ea71/ea81)
Caboobaroo replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes what GD said is right. Here is kinda the scoop on it though. When you swap to a newer style of disty onto an EA71, you need to plug the vacuum retard line which is the lower one connected to the vacuum module on the front of the intake right under the carb. The other line is for the vacuum advance which gets connected to the disty. -
Loose Carb Problems:(
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I think we figured out the loosening problem last night. Some non-fuel-impervious silicone was used on the carb gasket, and it was getting eaten away by the fuel in the manifold. Now it won't run right for some reason though. We screwed with the timing and stuff last night at like 10:30 in Andrew's driveway but couldn't get it figured out. Maybe a plug fouled from the little bit of water that probably got down the carb from cleaning the oil off of the engine (another story). Edit: Oh, whoops. This is actually Snowman. I forgot to sign in with my account. -
Well so I'm trying to figure out why my Brat is running like crap the past few days and so today I was checkin it out on my lunch and WOO my carb is loose AGAIN!!! I tightened it up once and I had put some locktight on the bolts but I guess it still didn't hold... Why did this happen? And since the carb is loose (well the adapter to manifold is loose) it is leaking some water from the water passage that comes up to the base of the carb. *sigh* why does this happen to me this close to the show?

Well I get to work today and my manager looks at the schedule so I do just to see what he's looking at and HEY I got Saturday and Sunday off!!! They forgot to look at the calander when making the schedule for this week and so he realized that I wanted those days off and WOOT I got them!!! So now I'm coming but now I have to pull the motor in the Brat, fix the oil leaks and rebolt the carb down because it keeps coming loose:(

Help wiring a Tach in a 78 Brat
Caboobaroo replied to subieman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah that was the only car I've seen that box on. I didn't even see it on my '79 wagon which should have an electronic ignition box since it too is a '79 just like the Brat I worked on. there were two wires going from the disty (pink and blue if I remember) that went into the box, then there was a harness that came out of the box and went to the coil, ground and there was another wire which I believe was the lead for the tach.... -

Help wiring a Tach in a 78 Brat
Caboobaroo replied to subieman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok I worked on a 79 Brat with a stock tach and it had a special little box next to the coil. The wires from the disty go into the box and it hooks up to the wire coming from the tach and it also hooks into the coil. I helped a guy get his rewired after someone pulled the coil out and made a mess of the wiring... -
How rare is a 76 dl 2wd wagon
Caboobaroo replied to Racer-x's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ooo jumpseats for a Gen 1 and a passenger side tail light also:D Just some stuff I need;) -
78 2wd conversion to 4wd
Caboobaroo replied to Rockman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well if you find an '83 2wd EA81 with the electronic disty in it, pull it and it'll drop into your EA71. I have one in my '78 Brat and the gas mileage was great with the stock carb, 30mpg with my foot in it roasting the tires:D -
For all Mudders Going to WCSS-6
Caboobaroo replied to mudrat79's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hrmm I wonder if the lowered Brat would make it....maybe I'll bring a come-along with me and some beefy tires on some EA81 wagon wheels and slap them on the back:grin: I do know that if I come up, I'll have a set of crap tires that I will be doing the fatty Bratty burnouts with. -
well the only problem is I work Thursday-Sunday and I was thinking about driving up for a few hours and hanging out but the price of gas in a car that gets crap for mileage. As for quitting, that is not an option. I have to make money so I can quit this job in a few weeks to go to Wyoming but they don't know that;)

Hey Jsaon, thats Ross in Idaho. Andrew saw that car when it was getting the front bumper put on it and he was at one of the Hatch Patrol meets. Its a pretty pimpin car IMO:D -
78 2wd conversion to 4wd
Caboobaroo replied to Rockman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well since its a California model, it has the pointless disty in it. I totally forgot about those but yeah in all the 49 states, they have the points disty... -
Well I got my new schedule for the week and the 2 days I requested off I didn't get. I was requesting Saturday and Sunday off so I could come to the show but instead the schedule me to have Tuesday and Wednesday off. So I might not be at the show and if I am, it'll be for a couple hours to make an appearance and to get rid of some parts. Sorry for whoever is reading this but I'm kinda pissed about it because I requested the days off about a month ago. I really want to come and reveil the Brat and how well it lights the rear tires up:D (end rant)
-
well my Brat with the JDM high compression motor and a Holley 5200 on it will light the tires up and roast them like its nothing. Everytime I roast them, it lights them up posi. I'll be getting some pics and some vids made of me roasting them off because I want to send a pic of it in to Sport Compact Car..... I've watched whole cars dissapear in a cloud of tire smoke:D:D:D

So... my tranny ate itself today...
Caboobaroo replied to Seahag1978's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ask Paul (moosens) if he has one. He is the big gen 1 guy on the east coast. It would probably be cheaper to get one from him than to ship. I do have one but shipping would probably eat you just like your tranny did to itself:D -
78 2wd conversion to 4wd
Caboobaroo replied to Rockman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sorry but there is no way to convert a gen 1 2wd to 4wd. I have researched it and the underbody is just completley different and so it won't bolt up. It would just be easier to find another 4wd. As for the disty, find an EA81 2wd electronic disty and swap it in. It easy, just connect the yellow and black wires to the coil like they would be on the EA81, connect the vacuum advance line up and plug off the vacuum retard line, and time it. You will probably have to time it by ear because I have never been able to get the timing marks to appear with this type of disty in an EA71. The '79 doesn't have a electronic disty in it. Mine didn't and my FSM doesn't mention anything of it. I do know of the points distys in gen 1's do vary between '78 and '79. The EA81 I have heard will bolt in but you would need the steering rack from an 1981 Brat with the EA81 in it. I also have heard from a friend who did the EA81 swap into his '77 4wd wagon that you don't need it.....I haven't tried the swap myself until I get my EA81TT done for my wagon. I hope this helps answer some questions of yours:D -
ok well here goes the story. Tuesday night after working on my beast up at Andrew's house, I drive the 15 minutes back to my place in the Brat. It was about 9:30ish at night so of course I had my headlights on. I get back home, and shut it all off. About an hour later I go to move it about 5 feet forward and I turn on the headlights and nothing comes on. No headlights (high and low), dash lights, tail lights, or license plate lights but I do have turn signals, back up lights and brake lights. I do not have power at the fuses which are right after the headlight switch so I'm guessing it is either the switch or the main power wire that goes from the battery to the headlight switch. In my FSM, it shows a parallel fuseable link setup right after the battery. Now when I got the car, it was completly corroded and I HAD to cut it out so I could at least drive it. How important is this fuseable link setup? Andrew had the same thing happen in his '77 wagon and he said it was the power wire going from the battery to the switch. So is there anyway I can test the switch to see if its good or not?

WOO the Brat runs again!!!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I believe I have two sets and if you want, you can also have the blue parts motor that I have because I won't really be needing it and I just need to get rid of it before I leave. -
I put a Holley 5200 onto my gen 1 brat. Its basically a Weber with smaller venturies. I have a pretty good noticable difference in power since I can get it to swing the rear out when I hit second in RWD when I'm turning:D I just used the adaptor for the EA81 manifold and it works great. I got the adaptor for free, when and bought some bolts at Napa, made a couple of gaskets and droppped it right on. I love it but my fuel mileage is dropping but I think its from the fact I still need to do some tuning...

WOO the Brat runs again!!!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well its still running thank god:D I do have some timing issues though because it does a little dieseling when I turn it off but not much. The only thing is when I got to set the timing to 12 BTDC, it hardly runs and has no low end power. Any thougt on why that is? I messed with the idle mixture screw on the front of the carb but I have never really messed with a Weber (ok Holley 5200...). Anyways I just need some help with some adjustments but even when I'm going around a corner, top out first gear, shift into second hard, the whole back end slides very nicely:D Oh and Jason, that motor will come up the next time either Andrew or myself come up. So do you want two sets of motor mounts or just the one set on the motor you're getting? -
Finally, I got the new motor in the Brat. This thing runs sooo good now. I got the Holley 5200 on it that is from a 2.3L Pinto that was fully rebuilt that I paid 15 bucks for. I still have to do some adjusting to it but it left a FAT patch of rubber in front of my parents house:D I think it has more power than the old motor which is what I was hoping. Well I gotta go cause more tire smoke and pissed off neighbors!!!

JDM EA71, how to tell?
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah Craig, you're right on the EA71 fat case and the EA81's getting the hydraulic lifters in 85 I believe. So from looking it more, it is NOT hydraulic lifters. I'm thinking about when I get the motor in, I'm gonna do a compression check on it because there are also the all famous high compression EA71s out there. John (Mudrat79) had one but I didn't get it off of him before he got rid of it:( -
2003 WRX STi motor install in 88' Wagon

dude, we could all have WCSS6 at your place:D We can all help you do the swap, probably take about a day or so for all of us to do it;) -
goofy carb, help please
Caboobaroo replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the intake off of an EA71 won't fit. You need to find one off of an EA81. years to look out for would be, 82, 83, 84 that have the same carb as you, 1 barrel Carter-Weber. So you need to find an EA81 with the 2 bbl Hitachi or just the intake, then find a Holley 5200 off of a Ford 2.3L, and then get an adapter plate to bolt it on:D
