Pics of my gen1 brats(more pics & tech )
Caboobaroo replied to lumpycam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I notice the red one has a 6-lug conversion done to it or something. Either I'm going blind or loosing my sight or there seems to be 6 lugs on the wheel that is missing the hubcap. Is that right??? -
Needed!!1977 DL4wd Strut Mount
Caboobaroo replied to 1977DL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I can look but I don't think I have any. There's a yard near me that might have one and I can look but I'm not sure. I do know that there are a lot of yards up there that have gen 1 parts but you just have to look. -
'78 Brat carb problems
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yup I did. It was one of the first things I checked while putting it back together. I still can't figure it out. Now it has a problem idling while cold like the choke isn't working. Meh, it stil will leave 20 feet of rubber from the back tire pretty easily:D -
Well my Brat that I recently got had a bad disty so I dropped my EA81 2wd electronic disty into it and I also tore my carb down, let it soak in Chem-Tool, cleaned it up with some carb cleaner and put some new gaskets in it. Now here's my problem: it runs a little rich and when you're into it hard and then let off of it, it backfires sometimes. It also doesn't like to start very easily but my idle is where it should be. Is this a carb problem or does it sound like my timing is off or something? Just need some help:D

How to get 220-230hp from 1.8turbo?
Caboobaroo replied to Tee Koo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If I remember, they never made a turbo VW Scirocco. They have made a kit but never made a factory turbo Scirocco. My buddy has one but he made it himself......Saab 900 turbo:D -
well I was thinking of a smooth finish on the top of the tonneau cover cause thats how I like it. Maybe add some diamond plate trim to the sides or something.....

There's a color code badge on the core support just to the left of the hood latch. If you know a place down there that can mix auto paints, take that number to them and tell them what car, year, etc. and they should be able to mix you up a batch. If I was near my wagon right now, I could tell you what the number is but its about 20 miles away. But yeah, find a place that specializes in auto paint and give them all the info and they should be able to mix you up a batch of paint. I hope this helps:D

Greg I totally understand what you're talking about. I was thinking about making one for my newly aquired '78 Brat. I was planning on making a frame out of 1" angled aluminum and covering it with some thin (20 gauge?) sheetmetal. I was then planning on using a couple hinges and bolting them to the back of the cab, bolt them to the cover, put an electric latch from an 82-92 Camaro/Firebird on the tailgate, and use 2 - 82-92 Camaro/Firebird hatch struts to raise the cover up. I thought about making this same cover for a '67 Chevy longbed that I was supposed to get about a year ago but that never happened:-\ So now I can make it for the Brat:D Here's a pic of what I'm talking about.... http://usmb.net/gallery/album249/Brat

ea81 carb on a ea71?
Caboobaroo replied to the sucker king's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah I just put a newer carb on my 78 Brat and the throttle linkage hit the intake manifold. Also the cable mounts differently but that should be fixed when you change the throttle linkage -
Might be gettin a new toy!!*Pics Added!!!*
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK since the weather was nice today, I got a couple pics of the Brat. I'm currently rebuilding the carb off of it and so I tried an '80 carb but it won't work because of the throttle linkage. Anyways here they are. Enjoy!!! http://usmb.net/gallery/album249/AUT_3267 http://usmb.net/gallery/album249/AUT_3268 http://usmb.net/gallery/album249/AUT_3269 http://usmb.net/gallery/album249/AUT_3270 http://usmb.net/gallery/album249/AUT_3271 http://usmb.net/gallery/album249/AUT_3272 -

Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well now I can officially can do the happy dance. I got the car yesterday but it is need of some carb work but other than that, it leaks no oil and its pretty straight with very little rust. Pics will come when I can get the chance but this thing is pimpin!!! I got me a BRAT:D:D -
I need some body advice
Caboobaroo replied to 1979_GL_MINT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
about the only thing you can do on a small budget is to cut the coils in the front. The rear has torsion bars that you have to reset but if you plan on going down with it, you might want to pull out the bumpstops in the rear for more clearance. I cut 3 coils out of the front and I have about an inch and a half of travel with isn't very much but I plan on finding springs and shorter struts to work but I have had no luck so far. -
Yep, I might be getting a new toy. Here it is... 1978 BRAT!!!! Poop brown with the brown/black interior. 4-speed, 4wd with very minimal rust. I'm gonna see if he'll trade it for the '88 Justy 2wd that Andrew has then buy it from Andrew for 50 bucks. So lets hope he doesn't get it impounded before I can talk to him again about it (He has a list of cars that he has gotten impounded because he has no license) But yeah I can start doin the happy dance!!!

is it worth the time to polish rods and crank?
Caboobaroo replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
With the amount of work for such a little gain, it's not worth it IMO. To smooth the casting from the INSIDE of the block would be such a pain and VERY timely. If you keep the oil changed regularly like you do in the Legacy, you shouldn't have a problem with it:D On another note, gimme a call this weekend. I'm gonna be over at Chris Kobernick's house and I'll have my phone on. Later Jon Russ -
POLL: Where do you shift
Caboobaroo replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it all dpends. Everyday cruising, I shift at about 3-4k but when I'm our harassing the ricers, I usually shirt at about 6k:D -
mounting gauges on A-pillar
Caboobaroo replied to The Scooby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Andrew has the same one in his turbowagon. He got it from Flowmaster along with the boost gauge. Looks pretty snazzy minus the hole for the second gauge:D -
Opinions on cooling fan possibilities for 83 EA81T wagon with 3" lift kit
Caboobaroo replied to ShawnW's topic in Off Road
Shawn, I have the perfect idea for you!!! My buddy just turbo'd his 86 VW Scirocco with a Saab 900 turbo. He also pulled the radiator and the dual electric fans with it. He showed me the radiator and fans the other day and WOW, these fans are heavy duty!!! They are made of plastic BUT they are thick and heavy, great for any sort of off-road use. Just a though:D -
I hate to tell you this but I AM going to have a twin turbo EA81 just for the record. Had to make that clear. As for your idea WJM, that would me such an awesome project but it would be major $$$.

What you're dealing with is camber not toe. So after getting the info straight, if I were you, I'd keep it like that. You'll have better handling through turns, better than if the camber was zero. It will also help the prevention of wheel breakage by changing the way the rims flex in the turns. So if I were you, I'd keep it with the camber in, especially since you're wagon is lowered. Just my $.02

D/R and S/R Tranny Q's
Caboobaroo replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I guess I'm a weird one then. I like having a d/r tranny on the street. Slap her in LOW and then I can beat a lot of people off the line. When I get the EA81TT in there, i'll be a little more than just "off the line";) -
Why Won't it Start? IT STARTS!!!!!
Caboobaroo replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
 YEAH!!! Way to go. All I have to do is build up my EA81T and splice the harnesses together and I'll be going myself. Congrats!!! -
Front push/light bar and roll bar
Caboobaroo replied to 1979_GL_MINT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey James, glad that I could help you. As for the shaved bumpers, I pulled the bumpers out of the car (mounts and all) and then I welded some sheetmetal over the holes, ground down the welds so it was flush and vola, done:D If ya need anymore help, lemme know. I just put EA81 front suspension under the front of my wagon and the parts are so much cheaper and parts are a lot more avalible -
Front push/light bar and roll bar
Caboobaroo replied to 1979_GL_MINT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
http://usmb.net/gallery/album64/1979_4wd_a http://usmb.net/gallery/album64/1979_4wd_b Here's a couple pics from the brochures in the gallery. The first one has a Brat with a front winch bumper next to a wagon with an "A" style pushbar on it. The next pic has the one of the Brat roll bar with the jumpseats attached to it. Hopes this helps Russ
