  1. Yeah my old EA81 hatchback that was sitting in a field for like 8 years had the same problem. The freeze plugs had popped out of one of the heads. I replaced them and it ran great minus the carb needing work. That should be your problem so try it. Good luck!!!
  2. Welcome to the board. I myself am another gen 1 owner. I have a 1979 DL 4wd wagon that is probably the same color. Here is the '79 brochure http://usmb.net/gallery/album64. What kind of problems can you see that are wrong with it? Is the oil leaking from anywhere? Usually they will leak from the valve covers on either side of the motor. The gaskets will start to leak and the only thing that I would recommend would be to change the gaskets. I bought a set from the local Subaru dealer for fairly cheap. It will take 2 bolts per valve covers to remove them. Again I welcome you to the board!! Russ
  3. It also looks like it has the checker board seatbelts that match the seats but I cannot tell. What a weird car:-\
  4. DUUUUDE its lookin VERY nice. We should so do a get together when I get the wagon goin again which will hopfully be soon. Anyways, how long have you been workin on it so far? The amount of work that you've done on it its so much compared to what I've done on my wagon in the past few months. Oh BTW, Richirich is in Portland. If ya need anything, I usually go to Portlan on a regular basis and I could pick up anything for you:D
  5. Well since I got my EA81 suspension into my wagon on the passenger side, it still sitting a little too high for me and I'm not gonna cut anymore coils out of it so I decided to modify my control arms AGAIN. Instead of welding the stabilizer bar to the top of the control arm like I did before, I'm gonna weld it to the side and add some other metal to stiffen it up so it won't break. It's gonna be sittin about an inch to two inches lower in the front if I do this. Then I'm gonna get some new pics of it and see what the differences are. Hopfully I can get it done by this weekend.......I'm hopin.
  6. Hehehehe I can't WAIT!!! I finally have me a motor, computer, wiring harness, fuel lines and pump. Now comes the fun part.....the conversion:D:D
  7. Yeah thats right, the rear suspension now. I haven't even looked at the differences yet. I haven't even had the back of my wagon in the air yet. I just wanted to know what were some of the major differences between the EA71 and EA81 rear suspension/diff and hanger are. Andrew does have the rear suspension, diff/axles, hanger, and brakes out of a EA81 car sitting there and I started looking at it the other day. Does anyone have a 4wd EA71 rear suspension out of a car that they could take pics of? Has anyone looked into doing this conversion yet? Seeing I've already fabbed up new stabilizer bars for the front, I think I can make the EA81 suspension fit:D
  8. well if this was a manual, I'd say lighten the flywheel but since its a automatic.....ummm the only good advice would be to get rid of the auto but you mentioned keeping a numbers matching car so I don't think you'd be doing that anytime soon. Fab up a cold air intake, work on the ignition by using a bigger coil, bigger radiator with dual electric fans, maybe an intercooler and if you use one, put a boost controlled fan on it. Other than that, I can't think of anything you could really do to it besides raise the boost and readjust your timing.
  9. cool thats what I was looking for but now, its time to let the questions fly.... First off, since his car is a 2wd, can I get the rear stuff from a 2wd XT6 or did those come with 4 wheel discs? If I have to use the 4wd stuff in the rear, couldn't I just break a couple rear cv's off of some rear axles and stuff those in there to keep it 2wd? Also, this whole Impreza parts list, what year/make/model of Impreza would this be? Is it something common to a lot of wrecking yards? Thanks again guys, I love this board:D
  10. Of course you can drive them on the streets. Its all legal until you get pulled over isn't it?
  11. Well my buddy is thinkin about doin a 5-lug conversion on his 89 2wd sedan. So this morning I get on the board thinkin, "I can look up Subarutex's old post he made about the list of 5-lug parts for the conversion." So I do a search for it and nothin. I search again and still nothing. So I've been looking for it for about 30 minutes and STILL cannot find it. Where did it go???? It was very useful information that is becoming valuable to some people like me!!! So if someone knows where that post went to or if someone can give me the same info it had, PLEASE help me out. Thanks in advance Russ
  12. My wagon is lowered. I don't have any pics because its currently up in the air with the front end torn apart. I haven't finished my EA71-EA81 conversion yet. When I get a chance to finish it up, I'll get a couple pics but all I have to say is that it sits a hair lower that WJM's EA82 wagon:D I'm also gonna test fit some 15" pugs on it too with some low pros
  13. Ok I've had a lot of people asking me about my disty swap. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about now you'll know. When I first got my '79 4wd wagon, the points disty was full of oil and just taking a crap on me. I decided to do a disty swap to a newer electronic disty from an EA81 2wd. Now for those of you who are thinking about the swap here's what you do: 1. Pull out the old disty and remove the wires and vacuum lines going to it. 2. Remove the ballast resistor and the little box on top of the coil so you have JUST the coil on the mount. 3. On mine I had to figure out which vacuum line went to the advance and which one went to the retard so one you know, plug off the retard I believe and use just the advance. 4. Connect the wires from the disty to the coil (yellow-negative, black-positive) 5. Reset your timing and away you go!!! If you have any other questions, lemme know and I can see what I can do. I hope this helps everyone that has the older points disty:D
  14. Start asking around on the board. I got mine from Hondasucks for helping him on his 1982 4wd sedan. He had it out of the old motor because it was originally a 2wd auto car. I can keep an eye open but I usually don't see any in the yards around here that still have motors in them.
  15. Geez dude that thing is NICE!!!! I can't wait until I can get the lowering job done on my wagon. It'll be sittin prolly a bit lower than yours but with some 15's under it when I get the hubs redrilled and some very low pro tires, it'll be sittin nice. I too have been looking at getting stiffer springs but since I'm on a tight budget, I can't do those right now so 3 coils out of the stock springs is workin for me:D
  16. Its like making any other car more powerful. Exhaust, intake, carb, coil, plug wires, new sparkplugs, disty cap and rotor (its amazing what a tune-up can do). Basically just start with the general basics and then if you have lots of money left over, you can start on what GD was sayin; heads ported and polished, intake and hedas port matched, and a custom cam.
  17. dude nice find!!!! Thats a pretty nice lookin sedan. Sheesh I wish I could find those up this direction:) Oh and is that a Datsun 510 sedan next to it???? Oooo I might be interested in that if its the 510 sedan.........
  18. well I'm not in the mood to pull the other arm off because it is such a b**** to get in and out. But yeah, I'm thinking its prolly tweaked and I'm just gonna get another one from the yard. Lets hope the next one isn't tweaked cause then maybe I'll just make my own tubular a-arms:brow:
  19. Well so I got the passenger side EA81 suspension in my wagon. It looks great and so today I figured I would go ahead and since its not raining, I'm gonna do the driver side as well. So I unbolt the EA71 suspension and I bolt in the control arm and my new stabilizer bar. At first it seems that i made the bar too short but them I realized that the actual control arm is not sitting where it should be. Its too far forward!!!! Well now I don't know if this is supposed to sit stock like this on EA81 cars because it sure isn't sitting where it should. So my questions for all you experienced ones is: Why does it sit like this? Is it bent or tweaked or is it supposed to be like this? Does anyone have any pictures of a driver side EA81 control arm??? Help please!!!!
  20. I had the same problem in my 79 wagon. The day I got it and I was driving to Andrew's house, I parked it and about 2 minutes later, I went back out to drive it some more. I pulled out of his driveway and when I got to the street, it started to leak. I looked and looked and looked but I couldn't find where it was leaking from (after I shut it off) I started it back up again and the leak had stopped and hasn't returned since. I still don't know what it was or anything like that....weird.....
  21. meh just weld the lil bugger up and you'll be on the road in no time:D
  22. Hey guys, you gotta give me some credit. I'm a hardcore Chevy guy but I'm on my number 2 Subaru right now!!! As for a proportioning valve, I don't really see why you would HAVE to change it. I know on 82-92 Camaros when doing a rear disk brake conversion you need the proportioning valve which is a b**** because its mounted inside the master cylinder. One reason for the proportioning valve is for the simple reason that it takes less pressure to push on the drum brakes then it does for disk brakes. The other reason for proportioning valve is to keep pressure in the lines for the drum brakes so the wheel cylinders stay partially inflated so they don't get moisture in them and rust them. I don't know if this is true for Subarus but I'm not sure. This is a good swap to try because then it gives you the experience so when other people want to try it, you can direct them in the right direction:D
  23. yeah I'm gonna go street too:D. I like to go wheelin in a larger rig like a Dodge or a Chevy pickup, maybe a Subaru if I feel the need to do trail riding. But yeah, the 79 is gonna be for street ONLY!!! Granted its 4wd but how many people lower a 4wd station wagon and put a twin turbo motor into it? NONE:D:D:D....except for me:brow:
  24. Well Mike from what I've been told, the interior is TRASHED. Like it makes the RX interior Andrew got look like its almost perfect......
  25. Brian, I'm thinking about doing the same swap but with the EA81T and the d/r 4-speed. When I get the motor, I am gonna try and test fit it into the car. If you get to doin it before I do, lemme know what you find cause it'll be great info for the USRM, Thanks Brian:D
