first gen BRAT spotted.....(purchase secured)
Caboobaroo replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
its not even the shape. Both the GLs and the DLs had round headlights BUT the size of the headlights are different such as.....the single headlight setup (not like the one in the pics) are slightly larger than the quad setup (like the Brat in the pics) -
Thanks for your help and guidance Corky! This is exactly what I needed to hear. So you asked what car this motor was planning on going into. I'm planning on dropping it into my 79 4wd wagon. My thought on the driver side turbo is since its not going to be in a factory location, I in theory can place it higher, lower, back, front etc. couldn't I? Also thanks for the info on the diesel vs. gasloine turbos, I wasn't quite sure how different they were. About this book. Where can I possibly find it? Ebay, an online bookstore, or should Borders near my house carry it? Do you have any ideas on what small motors (900-1000) came with turbos that would work for my project? Again, thank you Corky for your words of wisdom:D

Is this a piece or for both?

Rear disks, gen 1. Possible?
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

Rear disks, gen 1. Possible?
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well would anyone have a front disk setup that is trashed that I could play around with? It needs to be in kinda decent shape, enough where I can modify it and get it to work before I go and get a nicer set. Just in case I screw up. Oh and I will make a step-by-step process so it can be put in the USRM. So I'd need the calipers and the rotors? Would there be anything else I'd have to get for it? -
What causes that Subaru ticking?
Caboobaroo replied to Subafly's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
besides the oil pump problem, there are pressure relief springs that tend to wear out after awhile. They loose their spring rate and become worn so then less oil pressure can get into the heads. They are located inside the heads and I believe you can access them by taking the valve covers off but I'm not sure. -

Hrmm well I guess I'll have to find a set of gen 2 rear disks then.....What car did those come on? Was it even an option? -

nope thats just a myth. They did make DLs with quad headlights.....I have one and it is a 79 wagon. -
well I feel this would be a great learning experience and I have researched turbos quite a bit and I also did a report on Thermodynamics and Turbocharging fall term for a history class. As for the room issue, room doesn't matter especially when you make your own brackets, up and down pipe, etc. Also with the twice a troublesome issues, this motor will NOT go into the car until I get it running on a running stand I am currently building and that goes for the tranny too. So call my ideas dumb but I feel that it can be done with time. I can do it without a lot fo money because I can fabricate any parts I need (thank god for CNC mills and lathes). Oh and another thing, how hard is it to find some of these turbos like the ones on motorcycles or anything else that would have small turbos? Do you think I could do it with two stock EA82 turbos and hopefully get rid of some of the turbo lag? I'm planning on making this a parallel setup not a sequential.

WOOHOO....this is kinda off topic but how much could I get a set of ball joints for a 79 4wd wagon for? I don't have a lot of money and discounts are always the greatest things:D

Is it possible to put rear disks in a gen 1 4wd wagon? Anyone done it? I'm thinking about gettin rid of the drums and swap it to disks. Any clues, suggestions, ideas? Thanks Russ
-
Ooo I wanna know too!!! I am planning on doing this to my wagon but I want to know more details about it. Oh and about rear drums, could I do it to my drums? Is it a good idea?

Carter/Weber tighten down
Caboobaroo replied to Geck512's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well I can't think of the two types off the top of my head right now but the timing light hooks up to: 1. The positive on the battery 2. The negative on the battery 3. Around the #1 sparkplug wire So the white smoke inicates it has a coolant leak somewhere. We can diagnois that problem later. You mentioned tranny and clutch. Whats going on with it? What are the symptoms or problems you're having? Anyways, I'll email you my number later but now, I'm gonna go to bed....its been a long day -
OK, this project is one of those "I'm doin it for the fun of it" I'm not really looking for more HP or torque, just for the simple fact of doing it and being able to say that I did it. For those who do not know, I am a Camaro nut. So the wagon is one of those cars that will help me stay out of trouble on the road where the Camaro......we all know what 1100HP on the street might be able to do:D

OK so for all of those who know and that don't know, I'm planning on building an EA81TT. The only problem is that the stock Subaru turbos are a little too big for my twin turbo idea and so I was thinking of something a little smaller. I have a few ideas but also input would be greatly appreciated. So I was thinking a couple turbos off of the list: Chevy Sprint Turbo VW turbo diesel Saab? Anything else that has smaller turbo than a Subaru? Would any of these work/not work? Thanks for the input guys Russ

Carter/Weber tighten down
Caboobaroo replied to Geck512's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey Josh, its Russ. As for getting the gaskets, you mght be able to get like a roll of gasket paper and use the old gaskets and make your own. The other place would probably be the dealership but they can sometimes cost a little $$$. As for doing the conversion from a Carter Weber to a Hitachi, you'll need the carb of course, the manifold, and a vacuum diagram even though it is pretty straight forward. You can usually pick up a manifold and a carb from a yard for pretty reasonable. I think Andrew might have the carb and the manifold. Either that or your buddy with the wagon with no top could hook you up because that might be a Hitachi. Hope this helps a bit. I also have a timing light and we could get together up at Andrew's house one of these days and I can get it timed just right for ya. Oh the smoke, was it a blue color or was it white? If it was white, its a coolant leak problem somewhere but if it had a bluish tint to it, that'll be oil burning. -
I Found my Holy Grail Parts car today!!
Caboobaroo replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hondasucks has that same tranny in his turbowagon. It has the same shifter and everything too. It needs a rebuild REALLY badly (it grinds in first, second, and third sometimes) But yeah I've driven a turbowagon with that shifter in it:D Ok what is so special about them. It is NOT a full time 4wd dual range turbo tranny. It is part time 4wd, 5-speed turbo tranny. So it fits the turbo axles without mods. Also, the low range is not as low as a regular EA82 d/r 5-speed. The low range is higher so its more of a "sport" 4wd tranny. Thats all I can think that is different about them. Also Shawn, there is no diff lock on it. Its just like a regular d/r tranny but its turbo with a higher low range than the na trannies. -
Hey, who drives the silver Impreza wagon (with a 2.2?) that was driving from salem down towards and into albany and turned off towards costco? I didn't get a chance to pull up next to him at the light because he turned, but I was going to give a thumbs up. He was following my rump roast pretty hard, maybe realized my car had the wrong kind of wing, in the wrong color. (black RS wing on a red legacy)

they might fit. If not,I still have those bumpers and that skid plate and if ya get them and they don't fit, I could trade ya but if they do fit, well you can still have them:D
-
yeah buddy!!!! I wasn't sure where you were goin but dude, when you see the wagon, you might have a heart attack:D Just wait..... just wait.....
-
dude what tech school are you goin to? Cause this is a sweet score and maybe you should try and hook me up with some of these nice parts when I move on down there:brow:

hey man, I'm the other contestant for "Lets move to Wyoming":D We should be moving right after WCSS6 or so. I dunno about harpua and having a blazer. Not quite sure on that one........
