its a good idea to replace the timing belts unless you just replaced them. If you do go with Genuine Subaru timing belts or else you'll end up replacing them in a few thousand miles. As for lifting the engine out, if you have about 3 or 4 strong friends, its possible but it would be a lot easier and faster to do it with a engine lift. Aslo, if you plan on lifting it, why would you wanna go with the same size tires? I'd get a set of 14" Pug steels and put some offroad tires on them OR get a set of 6-lug Chevy rims and redrill them to fit the Subaru lug pattern. As for the turbo, there's no really cheap way to get around this. You can either find one in a j/y with low miles on it, find one on ebay or you can rebuild it yourself but the rebuild kit is 150 bucks alone.......

gen 1 coupe seats into a gen one wagon?
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Todd- not quite sure what you're saying but I think I get it. I want to use the seats that have the foot peddle thingy from the back that passengers in the rear can get out of the back seat. You know, the one thats located at the bottom left corner of the seat. I'll see if I can get a pic of it if it helps anyone. I'm gonna go to the yards today looking for parts and I know where there's a set of Brat seats that I'm gonna see about picking up. -
gen 1 coupe seats into a gen one wagon?
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
so my best bet would be to go with EA81 style hatchback seats? I can't really think of any yards around here that have a GF hardtop....do gen 1 Brat seats also flip forward? If they do, I know where there's a set of black ones I could get for free dollars:D -
Ok so my question is....will gen 1 coupe seats fit into a gen 1 wagon? Do they flip forward like in an EA81 hatchback? If not, how hard is it to fit EA81hatchback front seats into a gen 1 wagon? If the coupe seats fit in the wagon, has anyone seen any on the west coast (Oregon/Washington) in a j/y or in their garage?

5'11" but I fit into my gen 1 wagon pretty easily:D Oh and some of the RX seats have the height adjuster and so do the GL-10s.....but are the XT seats with the height adjusters still lower? -

There's a buddy of mine who is on the board (his name is 89urabus) that painted his wagon wheels he has on his 89 sedan, graphite color. It looks very nice. He's had many questions on "where he got those aftermarket rims"....lol, aftermarket......riiiiiight;) -
1986 GL-10 sedan 4wd turbo....all original from what I can tell including heads......315,913 miles and counting, cracked head and I still drive it everyday:D:D

also sometimes the headlights have problems with thw wiring I think. There have been a few people that have had problems with the headlights flickering on and off
-
maybe you just need to add a bit of techron to the tank. Sometimes when you do a tune-up, stuff that has been building up for awhile can come loose and slightly clog and injector.

Hood release cables- Can they be repaired?
Caboobaroo replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
or you could hook a wire up to the latch and have it dangle out of the grille:D Thats how I had my 79 wagon for awhile until I got around to fixing it:-p -
have you checked the bulbs too? I had a similar problem in one of my other cars and it turned out to be a buld was messed up in the socket

Busted hood release-How to break into hood?
Caboobaroo replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
aww come on Paul, you should be able to do this:D I'm not quite sure on that style of wagon but I know on my 79, I had to wiggle a screw driver through the grille and press on the little lever that is pulled by the cable. It took me about 30 minutes to do it but I finally got it open and pulled out the hood release mechanism. I hope you can figure this out;) -

I started when I was 6 helping my dad do a full brake and suspension job on his 1982 BMW 320i. He thinks he knows everything about cars and mechanics, but I love it when I can prove him wrong when he "knows" he's right. -
I know a guy that has a place up here in Scio...I know its a bit far but its a free place to stash cars of any kind:D

sorry for not responding sooner guys. I have had no time to really start BUT I have a basic drawing of both sides and so my next step is to put it into a computer. Unfortunalty with school, work, and trying to get my wagon back on the road, its not a priority on my list right now. Maybe when I finally get some free time I can really get started. But for now........yeah, school is my major concern. Kinda wanna get it out of my way:rolleyes: -
The $1 '78 Subaru Wagon

I'm gonna see about canalizing it for GD just for the huge favor he's doin for me. I'll see about claming some parts and if you need anything, I'll see what I can do. GD, what would be a good time to get together? I was hoping sometime this coming weekend we could get together and have a bash with it. Also I'm gonna send you a PM on a parts list I might need. -

cool beans:D *does the happy dance* YAY!!! I'll be able to drive my wagon once again. SO I'll need the hatch, any doors that are left over, the hood if no one has claimed it yet, the carpet if you're not gonna use it for the Brat, and maybe some odds-n-ends but I'll have to make a small list.....Oh and the tail lights and the fromt markers and parking lights, doesn't hurt to have back-ups:D I can also see about getting interior for ya too if ya need it seeing we've got a couple gen 1 Brats down here. Anyways I'll PM you with a more detailed list list Thanks GD -

another way to tell if its an 85 or an 86 is where the side mirrors are mounted. 85's are mounted TO the door where the 86 has them mounted to that triangle piece above the door:D -
The $1 '78 Subaru Wagon
Caboobaroo replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well the story is like this. I talked to GD last night on the phone about it. I also have my 79 wagon I got about 6 months ago BUT there is no title even though I have all the paperwork to get one, its just too muich work for me to do right now. So if I can convert it to 4wd, then I will be parting out my 79 DL wagon. I won't need the engine, trans, interior except for the carpet, and I can use and part out the body panels from my wagon on it seeing its the same color. Oh and BTW, I talked to Brian (Junkie) last night and he said that converting it to 4wd is just swapping everything over like an EA81....I hope he's right:rolleyes: -
swapping 4wd parts into a 2wd (gen 1)
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well I was just wondering if it was like swapping the 4wd into an EA81 car. I know its all a direct bolt-in but I need to know if its the same with gen 1's.
