Subaru #39 - Black 1989.5 RX coupe!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So because of this project, I was just planning on stripping the GL of all its worth and get rid of the main body. Well I've decided the silver GL will become my wheeler and once the XT6 and the RX are on the road, I'm going to do an EJ22E, d/r 5-speed and a 6" lift. I might also swap in an Outback rear subframe and suspension as well. -

Check the signal wire on the starter. Good chance you might have knocked it off. -
gen 1brat camber plates?
Caboobaroo replied to Lachlan's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
The one thing I will warn you though, the gen 1 strut towers are not very big so make sure you find a camber plate that will fit into the tower itself. -
Nope no need for new headbolts, just reuse them. A few people on here will tell me thats a stupid idea BUT this isn't a turbo'd car and it appears to be totally stock. So reuse them, torque them down through the proper procedure and call it a day. I'm in the process of doing a complete reseal on my XT6 and the only thing I had done to the heads were milled flat as the driver side was a hair out of spec. Clean off the headgasket surfaces real good on both the heads and block, then use a straight edge and a .002" feeler gauge to check the heads for warping. I had to have .0035" and .0065" taken off of my heads.

Unfortunately the wheels are already gone mentally to me as they have already been claimed. I will eventually be starting a new thread in the modifications forum for the swap. I plan on doing a few more things to the EJ22T (EJ20K heads, intake and so on) but I need to get my XT6 back onto the road and worthy of driving once again. -
PNW Subaru Alignment Specialist!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Products for your Subaru
Is your phase 2 EJ25 leaking from the headgaskets but you want to do them yourself? We also sell a complete headgasket kit with the upgraded headgaskets and all the other seals and gaskets needed to do the headgaskets. If its a bit out of your expertise, we can also do them here at the shop for you! -

I finally got a couple pics of it. The last pic in the album is of my XT6 (in the garage), my '87 GL (behind the black RX) and of course, the RX. http://rides.webshots.com/album/580418703yGHJgI -
So begins the insanity *Gathering ideas*
Caboobaroo replied to Twitch de la Brat's topic in Rally/Racing
My guess for the internals, probably about as good as an EA82T:rolleyes: -
Hopefully you also have the bottom portion of that spider intake. If not, you'll need to find one from a spider intake as they are special to them. You can either find the extremely rare turbo one or find an NA one to match your intake (as the turbo spider intakes had an EGR valve on the driver side) and put a water fitting into the coolant passage that goes over the engine block. I put a brass fitting into the passage but unfortunately the walls of said passage is very thin so I JB Welded the fitting into the passage but never had any issues with it leaking. Also, you'll want to reclock the TB 90* if you're going to be using a factory WRX/STi intercooler as the recirc valve will hit the throttle linkage.

I'm toying around with the idea of swapping in an Impreza dash...
-
Nope. Replacing the rear struts on these cars usually don't make the alignment go out of wack as there is no camber adjustment, just toe. Usually when suspension is replaced you should always get an alignment to make sure you get the most mileage out of your tires. Its not totally necessary on these as the rear toe is adjusted on the crossmember, not where you were working. The shake is a tire balance issue or possibly a separated tire depending on what speed you feel the sake. Clicking is going to be an axle most likely. I've seen axles make noise without the boots tearing. I'm going to guess that the inner boot on the RF axle is split open and finally started making noise as it sits right above the catalytic converter.

So since its not a GT, then its a SOHC 2.5. When they did the headgaskets, did they have the heads sent out and checked that the valve seats aren't leaking? Its a common issue on the SOHC 2.5 engines. I replaced an engine from a '05 Outback with the same engine and same issue. Perform a compression test and a leak down test and it'll tell you whats really going on.

I might have extras but not sure as the black RX is also missing the trim on that side:rolleyes:. I know I got some extra trim from Corky about a year and a half ago but I'm not sure what all is there. I also have a set of brown EA82 coupe door panels. -
My roomate and I found all of this guy's threads and videos and actually linked Rob to them:grin: He also has a blue EA81 coupe with an EJ20 N/A engine, plus the EJ20G in his red coupe:banana:

Just don't look at my signature then lol. My black XT6 AWD 5-speed with a rear LSD and my '87 coupe which has the EJ22t swap as well sitting in my driveway. The XT6 is getting a full engine reseal and newer front brakes and suspension too. -

Call the shop and talk to Ryan. Let him know you own the Ultimate RX and need the Caboobaroo specialty alignment. Unfortunately I no longer do the billing and discounts and such as I no longer do the work up front. (425)828-3600 -

Already done it once before though this time I will be doing most the work at my shop. Both cars on lifts and a couple people to help and it should only take a weekend... -
how do you replace headgasket on a EA81T
Caboobaroo replied to tlp8ntball's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Leave the intake intact, remove the bolts that bolt it to the heads, flip it up out of the way onto the driver side fender, drop the downpipe off of the turbo, remove the radiator and fans, bellhousing bolts, torque converter bolts if its an auto, engine mount nuts on the underside of the subframe, and pull it out. -
First I would like to thank a few board members for helping with making the process of getting this car a bit easier. Turbone, cap-n R and psyko all played a part in getting the car into my possession. Now onto the car. Back in '04 I had picked up a black RX when I moved to Wyoming and spent 2 years getting it back onto the road with a built (or numerous) engine, 5-lug conversion 4EAT -> RX manual and so on. I ended up parting the car out and putting everything except the EA82T into my silver '87 GL coupe which I called an RX. Well recently, some of you might have seen the black RX that markjw was selling that he had gotten from another guy that lurked on the USMB and NASIOC. The car passed hands to me finally and let me say, compared to my original black RX, this one has a clean body. Interior leaves something to be desired as it has an aftermarket sunroof in it which leaks bad. So my silver car (which has an EJ22T, Imp 5mt, 3.90VLSD, 5-lug, etc etc etc) is getting parted out and everything from it is going into the black RX:banana: I have pics on my phone but I can't get them uploaded as of right now. If you've seen Turbone's RX then make a clone of it which is basically what I'm doing:lol:

About to buy the Ultimate RX
Caboobaroo replied to Logan K's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Unfortunately I no longer have that gold badge for the back. I recently picked up another black RX that was in need of one:grin: For the alignment, bring it by AWD Auto in Kirkland. I have specific specs that I have custom made for a 5-lugged RX like the Ultimate since I've done it to two of my RX's and my XT6
