  1. Skip, I have done this swap and I posted it in the USRM awhile ago and since its been awhile, I can't quite remember what exactly I did with the ballast resistor. I believe I removed it as well and swapped in a bracket from an EA81 car for the coil, used the stock coil and wired the disty in like a normal EA81. I think thats how I did it but I'm not 100% positive.
  2. Well I'm going to bump this up right now. I currently have a '98 Impreza "L" AWD 5-speed, 3.9 tranny open and I'm going to open up my RX dual range since no one wants to buy it. I'm going to see about doing some swapping inside there and see if I can get my dual range to fit:banana:
  3. I am willing to bet my arse that its McBrats old wagon. I've ever only seen one in pics and it was his, and who else would have a PK lifted Mountain Wagon out in the midwest? Welcome and take care of that wagon, its actually been around on this board for longer then me IIRC.
  4. Try this out for size http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=64613
  5. Well I guess I'll be the first. My car started life out as a nonrunning FWD automatic coupe. After a couple years, it now has an EJ22T in it, 3.9 EJ 5-speed from a '98 Impreza and in the works is a 3.9 VLSD from a '91 Legacy SS Suspension/brake mods include AGX struts, ebay Impreza coilovers, single piston EJ calipers/brakes/knuckles/axles up front, XT6 stuff in the rear, XT6 front/rear swaybars and Enkei 17x8 RPF1s wheels with 215/45R17 Toyo Proxes 4s on it. Body mods are a painted black RX bodykit, tinted windows, Hella Supertone horns and RX STi badging. Interior mods are '05 STi front seats, 3 gauge A-pillar pod with Autometer gauges, titanium STi piston shift knob and of course, a decent stereo. Stuff that will come when I finally get money again. EJ22T will be bored and stroked to a 2.4 liter, STi 6mt DCCD tranny, R180 rear end, EJ rear subframe fitted into the back with custom suspension built by me, complete fiberglass widebody kit, 1 piece aluminum driveshaft, STi Brembo brakes all the way around, installation of my '05 STi hoodscoop, STi steering wheel, fuel cell, and of course a repaint by me with a custom one off silver I mixed specifically for this car. Bodykit will also get repainted in OBP.
  6. If you need a hand, I can help out on Wednseday if need be. I can do it in about a half hour form start to finish and I can also help step you through it so you can do it right everytime afterwards:-p
  7. reddevil, over on NASIOC and he destroyed more then 2 engines, more like a dozen if not more. Its twin charged now. Search over on NASIOC for reddevil, he has a few posts in the built motor discussion and he's local to me in the NW:banana:
  8. Eh kind of. I took a couple pics after I installed the seats. Its pretty straight forward though. You can kind of see it in this pic. One of the new tabs are on the left side of the pic http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2554267860067339125VxeCFL
  9. I know XSNRG has a good 4EAT in Olympia that came from my '89 RX. He has it for sale on CL for $150 right now. Check it out, maybe it would be worth it for you
  10. I have '05 STi seats in my RX. I took the stock EA82 seat rails and made tabs that I welded to the rails that bolt to the seats that make the seats bolt into the car. The gen1/gen2/gen3 cars have seats that have the bolts run vertical through the rails into the seats where the EJ stuff have the bolts horizontal into the seat. I made tabs that were welded to the EA82 rails and drilled so the bolts ran through the tabs into the seats. Took about 7 hours total but it was well worth it.
  11. Guess Ken's daughter beat you to it:drunk:
  12. I'd be down for one as well. October 23rd, my birthday, my car. I gotta g through my pics to find one I like though
  13. Just a random conversation I had with a buddy who is a WSP. He said that since it comes out in front of the passenger compartment, it can leak nasty gasses into the compartment and be potentially fatal which would be true. Thus why side pipes and stacks out the bed aren't illegal. That and why would you want to risk your life for something that is "oh so cool"?
  14. check the fuel filter, you could also be getting a clog inside the tank where the line comes out. Start there and see if that helps.
  15. Is there anyway to know for sure without getting my hands on another tranny that it is in fact the same bearing as a '98 Impreza? I guess I can ask on NASIOC too but I'd rather you guys take a wack at it first:brow:
  16. I've also heard from a WSP that the exhaust needs to be at least to the rear axle for safety reasons. CO2 is bad stuff mmmmkay? CO is worse if you don't have a cat....
  17. Maybe. I bolted the EA82 bracket onto the EA81 block and it didn't really work. The other thing you'll run into if you plan on modifying it is that it might hit the intake since there isn't too much room behind it so keep that in mind. Here's a pic of the EA82 bracket on a hydro EA81
  18. Well you live in the middle of nowhere and I I were you, I'd be afraid as well:-p I did a lot of driving in the wet, some snow wheeling and gave her some h3ll and never had an issue but of course, there isn't much nasty debris on the road here to be afraid of.
  19. Mike, the engine has low miles on it so the gaskets would be in good shape since it was rebuilt. Anyways, yes, easiest thing to do is to pull the intake. You could try and replace it with the intake on but its not going to be easy. This also gives you the opportunity to put new hose clamps on it if they weren't replaced when the engine was done.
  20. I could see about making one for you if I had the schematics or at least help you through it. I have heard though that some of the EA81s have the harness, its just tucked away but I don't know if that was for the EA81s or EA82s, it escapes me right now.
  21. Mike is right, RX's NEVER came with hoodscoops, US or otherwise. The XT turbo had a vent for the turbo but it wasn't too much of a scoop. For rims, Pugs or 13" alloys from a Subaru are your best bet unless you want to go with a 5-lug conversion which if this is a street car, is an awesome upgrade. However it does get costly anymore since the needed parts from an XT6 are becoming scarce. If you do go that route, you can use any wheels that'll fit a newer Subaru with a 5x100mm lug pattern. Hoodscoops that will fit onto an EA82 hood can be gotten from ebay. They're a cheap, WRX lookalike, but are smaller to fit the hump in the hood. I'm moulding a '05 STi scoop into my hood right now and its not an easy task since it is larger then the hump.
  22. really if you're not out wheeling it everyday, you'll be fine with leaving the front covers off. I did that on my '87 RX for 15k miles and never once had an issue with getting stuff on the belts and pulleys. It also helps pinpoint tensioner and idler bearing noises as well. Do it, it makes life so much easier.
  23. You can however use an EA81T PS pump bracket and bolt the EA82 pump to it. You can't use the EA82 PS pump bracket since it sticks out further to clear the timing belts which the EA81 doesn't have. Probably the best way to go IMO. I just remembered too that if its not a hydro lifter engine, then there won't be the bosses in the block for it. Hydro lifter engines have them but need to be drilled and tapped.
