EA81 solid lifter into my '87 EA82 coupe
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
So I thought of a problem last night while laying in bed. In my pics that I posted of the powersteering pump mockup, the bracket sticks waaay out and the belt for the alternator would rub on the bottom of it. Then I realized that it sticks out way far is because on the EA82, it has to clear the timing belts, DUH! So I have to use a EA81T PS pump bracket but lucky for me, there's a spare EA81T that I can go scavenge one off of:grin: If you've seen my post in the older gen forum, I found some missing freezeplugs out of both heads so I'm going to be running the hydrolifter block, hydro pushrods, solid lifter heads and rockers just in case I might need to do some valve adjusting for some odd reason, then I won't have a hassle. I'm going to hopefully be mating the engine up to the crossmember and tranny this weekend if I'm not too drunk/hungover. It IS St. Patricks day on Saturday and all... -
Where can I get freezeplugs? EA81
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah I was gonna try and catch you online but no such luck. I kinda remember something along the lines of you giving him some freeze plugs waaay back when I started hanging out with him. They were for my first Subaru, '83 2wd hatch.... So I'm going to go with the solid lifter heads, hydro block, hydro pushrods and solid lifter rockers so I can have an adjustment without hassle if I ever need it. I found out that my EA82 PS pump bracket isn't going to work due to it sticking out waaaay far (to clear the timing belts on the EA82) so I gotta go scavenge one off of the spare EA81T... -

Sad news for 5 lug swap peices...
Caboobaroo replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Will.... how soon do you need parts? I'm moving to Washington and I can see about rounding up the parts for you. I had to have baccaruda get me some of my 5-lug parts (mainly rear) because you don't EVER see them in Wyoming and I rarely get down to Colorado to go yard hopping... -
Is that the one Mudrat had? Looks like his place in the backround. Good job, looks awesome!

you know you can upgrade your front brakes and its a direct bolt on swap. All you'd need would be the calipers and the front hubs/rotors from a mid '83 EA81 and up. Gives you vented front disc brakes and parts are easier to come by.

Car doesn't start - electrical
Caboobaroo replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
If the positive battery cable is still stock, then it will have a fuseable link up near where it connects to the battery. They're actually 2 in parallel, both about 1 1/2" long IIRC. The other thing I can thing of is the connections on the back of the instrument cluster are dirty and need to be cleaned which is easiest when the cluster is out. It will also give you better access to the headlight switch and you can figure out why your dash lights don't come on. The speedo cable should just snap in and out of the back of the cluster. I found it easiest when the steering wheel has been removed to give you more room. -
The Hyperbolic ER27 Twin Turbo Build
Caboobaroo replied to Gravityman's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
The MS setup he's running woun't have a MAF, it'll have a MAP sensor instead. I'm stoked on this build and I can't wait to see the final outcome of it:headbang: -
Where can I get freezeplugs? EA81
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well unfortunatly, I can't wait a week to get them which kinda sucks. So here's the plan.... EA81 hydrolifter block EA81 solid lifter heads (valves, and springs) hydro rockers and pushrods Hopefully this setup will work! I've got the EA82 powersteering setup on it now so when I drop it into the car, it should be workable. Then drop in my modded disty and the SPFI that is stock in my coupe, slap it on a turbo EA82 crossmember, RX tranny, full 5-lug and away I go! -
Ea82T heads to Gen3 heads
Caboobaroo replied to desert dweller's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm not following what you're asking. Are you asking what is involved with swapping the stock EA82T heads (probably gen 1) on your wagon for gen 3 heads? If so, you need to remove the intake, exhaust, valve covers, cam cases, lifters, rockers, unbolt the heads, load the new heads up with your valves, springs, new seals, install lifters, install rockers, install cam cases, valvecovers, intake and exhaust. All of which is going to have to be done outside the car for easiest workability. Turbo will also have to come off as well. -
Where can I get freezeplugs? EA81

Dealership here is a no go. Just a bunch of retards working behind a counter. I've had mucho trouble with them getting me the right parts for my RX so I think that it wouldn't be very easy to even *remember* what an old Subaru looks like, let alone parts. No specialty nuts-n-bolts place big enough here to carry anything like that either. Paul, expanding rubber type? I'm not sure on what those are... Machince shops around here... I think there's one and they do domestic. They *might* have done some import but I highly doubt that they would have something like this laying around. So my next question... would heads from a solid lifter EA81 work on a hydrolifter block? I know the pushrods are different and the valves are smaller but I have everything from the hydrolifter block and everything from the solid lifter block.... -
So I noticed today while I was under my RX stripping the last few parts outta it, something laying on my shop floor. I get out and pick up said object and was like "Hmm, this looks like a freeze plug..." Looked at one heads from my EA81 hydrolifter that I'm resealing and noticed that there was one missing from this head. Looked at the other side and 2 are missing... sonofa*****. I've heard these can be a pain to find since they are metric so where can I get a half dozen of them? If I'm going to replace one, might as well replace them all... I need then ASAP too......

EA81 solid lifter into my '87 EA82 coupe
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Ok just a little bit of an update. Since I found that I cannot use the solid lifter EA81 that I have, I decided to start on the hydrolifter EA81 that I have as well. Reason for not using the solid lifter EA81 was because since it was such an early block, it did not have the bosses on top of the block to put my EA82 powersteering setup on it and I'll be a politician if I want to drive it 18 hours to Seattle with no powersteering on the interstate. The hydro block does have the bosses and 2 of the 3 holes already drilled and tapped. So tonight, I stripped the hydrolifter engine down to the shortblock and the oilpan, then went to work making sure the powersteering setup is going to work. I basically bolted the PS bracket onto the block, then the pump, and then the pulley. After all this, its a little chilly outside and I smacked my f***ed up finger pretty bad so I called it a night. I did however get some pics of it on the engine and what sort of spacers I'm going to have to use on the pump to space the pulley out about 1/4", maybe less. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2914969060067339125zEiyyS http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2950891080067339125FPRfXN http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2027434530067339125nxMlJV -
How's the fuel mileage Mike? Sounds like something with the fuel system is not funtioning properly. Running too rich will cause the dying issue. Sounds like either the fuel injector is stuck open, the fuel pressure regulator is bunked and letting too much fuel in, or the fuel pump might have an issue. The other idea is since this is an eletrical disty, you might be having an issue with it as well. Just a few things to check out.

I'd make a brace to go from halfway down the bars that go from the body mounts to the diff, to the lift blocks that the trailing arms attach to. The only thing though is to make both ends of the bars have bushings in them to help relieve stress on the welds. Just a though and it would help with lateral and longitudenal applications.

I noticed a couple weeks ago in the ebay/craigslist forum of this board, McBrat had posted up an original SOA ski rack attachment for factory wagon roof racks. Since I have one that is making its way to my coupe (I also have a bike rack for my mountainbike) I decided that this would also get its use after I move to head up to the mountains in Washington during the wintertime to go snowboarding. I bid on it, won, and including shipping, it cost me LESS then $30 to my door. Funny thing is, is it came from Bellingham, WA... So it arrived today and its still in the original box with original instructions. It also has NEVER been mounted either since the hardware is in the plastic still and came with 4 keys as well. Check it out! http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2930060430067339125ZjRgoC http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2968369920067339125EptCoE http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2851124860067339125lZrkPm http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2119981910067339125cuQMFx Thanks Mick for the ebay link!

Denver peeps, I need a favor...
Caboobaroo posted a topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
So some of you know that I came down to Denver this weekend in my $60 Audi. Early Sunday morning, after leaving a bar (no I wasn't drunk), I was following a friend to her house but she had to drop off a couple people. Last person she dropped off down by 84th and Wadsworth, the passenger side front brake caliper siezed on my Audi and breaking the axle. So if some of you are going to the yards here soon, keep an eye open for those two parts so I can come down and fix it. I got money and paypal so let me know, thanks. -

My '78 Brat is being revived!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
The other two Brats aren't mine, those belong to LUVMYBRAT. The red gen 2 which is in the center is an '84 turboBrat with mucho rust issues so it was stripped for its drivetrain and the beige one on the end is a '79 DL thats going to be donating parts to mine.
