  1. Looks like everyone here says the same thing sort of consistently. Any GL leone or loyale from 82 to 93 for under $200 with a grand worth of parts or a few junkers, will run you the next decade in all driving conditions if you're a conscious driver and can mod it yourself. And if you want power, put a bigger engine in the lighter car. Sounds about right to me. Everyone hates the ea82 motor but they do go to 300k with good oil, regular maintenance and love (if weberized or FI). Seems just about all mods cost a grand in the city, doing it yourself, if just to pay for parking for your junkers. The important ones seem to be; 1)5sp d/r trans. the most trouble free one. In the early gls they die about 200k and everything else seems to die about 150k (am i wrong here?) 2)redline weber carb if your base model is carbed. 3) lift for off road use 4)better radio, tires, and simple amenities like cup holders Not to bash the legacy models but they seem to go to 150k and get transmission probs unless babied.
  2. I'm understanding there is an issue here with the ej swapped cars idling high. I'm on my first swap and I hope not my last. I figured I should start my own thread. So who has had the same problem and what did you do? Me? I got a 90'auto sedan ej into 87 brat. Drives very nice. Needs a suspension upgrade but time will come. So following Gloyales advice on Turbone's thread I inadvertently hijacked, with the car hot and running, I tested the iac with a ground wire and found no change, voltage read 12v one side and 4v the other(not sure if thats right). I then changed out the coolant sensor, nothing. I dropped a 9/16 taiwan 3/8 socket into the iac hose from the rubber boot (no one will miss that one) to restrict the air to the aic, nothing. It still wants to overheat and is idling at 1200, 1300rpm. Now I haven't driven it far after doin all that last bit, but I have done a couple 25mile trips since the swap and just sometimes (rarely) it will drop to 1000rpm. Now my idle screw is all the way out and has been since the car was reborn and able to drive. One thing I want to do is run a direct battery ground to the dash just to make sure there isn't any odd feedback, more the merrier, right? Get the right polarity clutch switch/ neutral switch and know what I'm doing wiring it up.(clutch switch pin?) What else am I missing? Tailgate trim! Dang you guys are good!
  3. I just got a new coolant sensor, I'm going to test my iac like described in your post, then I'm trying the restrictor. In order. Whats up with the iac tunability? It swivels like a distributor. I googled it last night but I didn't find much regarding n/a motors, just turbos. I had a dream last night that it was idleing perfectly!
  4. Just a little shop in my neck of the woods that has been around since the turn of the light bulb, well mine anyway. Bunch of old guys still there. I might have the isolator styles wrong or backwards just the type I got I guess shouldn't be using due to internal failure.
  5. No word yet? We got our eyes peeled here. Dang I wish you luck!
  6. I just want to add, I've heard the battery isolators aren't as good as the solenoid type for running a second battery and can result in fire. I got one sitting here if you want it, i'm gonna use the solenoid. Just what I was told. I love the small battery thing and I'm looking to do the same thing for the camp site. I've been really happy with small shops like Acme auto electric on aurora ave. for alts. They do all sorts of custom stuff and just do electric and rebuild all their own alts for the same price as napa with a better product and warrenty.
  7. If you have all the pieces for the power rack and cant get the crossmember off (like being stuck at pull-a-part), you can drill out the spot welds off the lower plate on your existing crossmember to remove the plate and drill the required holes for the new power rack, just bolt it back on when done and dont over drill. You will need all the parts from the power rack though and the rubber grommets as well. If you closely look and compare your friends crossmember and yours, you will see what I mean.
  8. Points to ponder if your planning to drill your rim or hub; 1) do your new rims look fancy? (Like Yo! G'Dog Thems All Shiny Bling Dog Shoes On your Piamp Ride! and such snot) 2) are you going to beat the snot out of them and cover them with mud? 3) do you live with excessive auto regulations like in Australia? Real points to ponder; 1) are your brakes good enough? 2) does your engine have enough power? 3) will you keep up with up keep or do you have to take it to a shop?
  9. "If you pay attention, this is a pretty hard thing to screw up."Yeah Buddy! When did they put 9th grade back into middle school? When I was(n't) there they had just changed it to 9,10,11,12th being high school! Its reverted already? Its a 20yr phlip phlop? Why does a self drilled taper help "in any way "on a redrilled rim, why not just flip a nut and use the backside, keeping it self centered on the stock two? keywords: high!, School?, Drilled, Girls..., Flipped nut!, rolled a taper, hot drill action?, reverted to..., rim job, BEER!
  10. That thing needs a lift! You would be so happy!
  11. Makes me wish I had an ea82 again! I'm running my leone with ea82 wagon springs in the rear and its a little too stiff for crawling, but it drives like a lincoln with a heavy load. Without a load, it can get passengers a little car sick cuz its stiff! Literally "bouncing" down the highway! I want to get some sedan springs back there as I'm sure they will be a sufficient enough of an upgrade over the stock shock and not overkill like the wagon spring.
  12. The far terminal from your modified grommet should be positive. I just checked my setup. I had the same prob when switching from ND to the hitachi. I would seriously try to budget out a redline weber carb for that car. You can put a ea82 manifold on it if you run into a round hole style manifold and cant source a ea81 square one. They are just so much easier to keep in tune and everything is just so much cleaner.
  13. Well thats nice info to have layin around! Thanks! Did you get those carbed cars there?
  14. If its the same as an ej, (just an efi system) you need to get your ecu hot from a different source, like the black wire in the column plug. One drops voltage while cranking, not leaving enough for the ecu. I wired mine the same, tested w/ a dmm and was one(1) volt low, no start. I hope you used the same gauge wires or larger and soldered them. Clips or crimps are ok for the tiny stuff but larger amperage stuff cook and gain resistance like a lightbulb would under your dash. I really should start getting parts for this swap.
  15. O.k now I'm confused. My Idle circuit is grounded when off and not when on, and not getting4.5v when off. I didn't rewire any of that off the harness. If I should try to rewire that.... Where to go now? It should be stock still. Turbone, hows the high idle?
  16. Whats your mileage like, even with your tires and lift?
  17. bump How did this work out? I've got to get this right on mine.
  18. I got some results on the high idle issue with my swap when I (just) installed the neutral switch and grounded my tranny identifier pin. Do you think the comp. might have some sort of a/c or auto trans bumb up switch circuit ? I'm not perfectly idling yet, but it went from 2000k to 1250k steady with b20 and to 1000k with the neutral switch, and I havent cleaned my maf or aic yet. I'm hoping for some results there too.
  19. Bureaucracy at its finest. The law states (somewheres I aint lookin up) that auto component re-builders can charge twice what they used to under some law GW Bushie signed into existence, just to make it more expensive to fix your old car. Thats how a nd disty, dealer new, is now close to the same cost as a rebuilt one.
  20. I'm next to northgate, I'll look out for ya. Sometimes, karma has a weird way of showing its face. Maybe its more a lesson to others and not so much on you. We are all one of the dominoes in the illustration. Who knows the placement. Every one of your/our neighbors faces the same fate if we dont look out for each other. You might be more resilient, someone could have gotten it worse.
  21. Still nothin' like a Lincoln Continental for party of three, as long as your not "sleeping"!:grin:Leather is easier to clean. So what more does the OP want to know?
  22. I'm 5'9 152lbs and with a ply-wooded rear deck you get not a trace of corrugated rump roast-syndrome and can sleep two! ( not to hijack but) I got a twin size sheet of memory foam and its plush:cool: Had I known comfortable it really is when I had my last ea82 I'd a chucked the rear seats in that too! Storage for the gear and speaker boxes built in. Sometimes it sucks to not have extra seats though. Its amazing how much space they take up. I've camped in both ea's, just not a legacy and I'll say, they both suck unless you modify it. Whos camped in a lego? size and number!
