Slipped timing belt? 130K is time. Carbon blocking egr in manifold?

That is my big fear, a bent piece of metal is soon to snap. A roll cage would be nice but so would a sturdy frame. Turd Polishing is way over-rated. I hate the feeling of the walls closing in around me! AAAHHHGHHaaaaa Ha Ha Maybe off topic, but, maybe my car saved the passenger from certain death as my 66 f100 was right in front of my parked car and barely missed (I still don't know how). The hit to my car bounced them by, the truck would have stopped them in their tracks and I would have watched the whole thing, as I did. Gotta find a better way to look at it....

I'll try to get some pics uploaded, mandriva keeps dumping mozilla. I already have a 2" lift and 235/70/14s, coils in the rear on a 3" plate as high as they can go. I work wood, I carry some weight about twice a week. It might not be so bad to do a "cage" or at least some thing from the front to the rear and beef up that pillar in the middle and across the top. Does that mean I could put in a sun roof and not have to worry about the front windshield cracking with an ej assisted cluch dump? I don't know how to weld though. Cage or roll bar? What would my contact points be? What would my base be? Just my frame rails? Do I just cut into them and then weld away? So many questions!! So little time!!

I have two scrap doors and a bent pillar. Drivers side. Can I straighten out the pillar, reinforce it, like maybe a roll cage (or less..lets think budget)? What would a good fix be? Doors are replaceable. The pillar isn't (affordably anyway) my life isn't either so I want it to be safe Its only moved a little 3/4" to 1" it looks off hand, bent in the middle at the window line. Or should I just scrap the car and park it till I can get the lift and all the other goodies off it? All my parts for an ej swap are in, but the muffler, and I would hate to put all this work into the trash but the car is effectively trashed. Should I wait to find another body? Its an 82' wagon.

Headlight conversion complete!
Yo'J replied to bratman18's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I keep looking at this stock hatch by my house with the round lights and I keep thinking how cool it would look to make an mesh grill with the 3eye and sink the lights to look like a new mustang. I love the round lights! I hear the parts are tough to find. -
87 gl runs when it wants, stalls when it wants
Yo'J replied to joebmx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The carb, I think, would be a feedback carb so it gathers info on how the car is acting. The egr can be cleaned if it has no leaks and I have seen the manifold holes completely blocked with carbon fyi. The o2 sensor should be checked and I think, someone should pipe in here, The sensor can be a non subaru item as long as it has the same wire count. If its toast, it will always run poorly like its cold, not necessarily hurting power just economy and emmissions . They can be expensive$100 oem, but if I remember its a 2 wire and a bosch isn't that badly priced$40. Most vacuum leaks would give you a high idle. A clog, well....not so much. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=86141&highlight=stock+carb This might help a little -
The 5speed d/r just puts the car into a different category for performance. If you think you had it good with a PB then you haven't really tried a D/R. Pulling cars out of snowed ditches or getting to the top of that super muddy or snowy logging road is almost impossible with out it. I don't think I could l could ever go back.

Do you have a stock carb? I'll just guess so for now. I've had this problem before so I'm interested to hear about it. I put a weber carb on and that solved my problem but for you It might be not the solution. Have you done any maintenance like o2 sensor or egr replacement, checked for vacuum leaks? How is your power when its running? -
I finished my Twin Stick Mod!
Yo'J replied to bratman18's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That mod sounds great! How long did it take you total? I was thinking of something like that on my old 87 subi. So 4w is separated out of the high/lo. How is shifting in or out of 4wd in high vs lo? Just as normal? -
police took a report LOL there. White truck, seattle. million folk is the GSA, literally. To catch the punk is worthless. Now insurance....I will find how worthless.

Winter sucks for Sube owners. This is like the 15th Sube to get damaged because of stupid driving this winter. Sad, really sad. Poor little GL wagon. -Bill Reply With Quote The sad part is I wasn't driving it, it was a hit and run. They are ignorance marks from some turd bucket, not homemade lightening marks or speed dents, barely any mileage marks and over 222k miles. Well... new doors and then the ej . Well I guess I don't need to worry about how the paint comes out now:-\

I allways go to the shop to match parts! Calipers in hand. I have gotten everything for an ea82 first. Wheel bearings, wrong ones, water pump, yup, axles, wrong, cap and rotor wrong. Be prepared to send them back. Advance, Napa, schmucks, carqwest, whatever. Right box, wrong part. It dissuades me from using the internet for parts unless its obvious, like a motor from ccr. I would order that.

I heard the woosh of snow.... the thud:eek:....I turn and look and my car is shaking from the impact and this white blazer -suburban -tahoe thing is flying through the snow laden gully between the road and the parking strip. I shoe up and jump out the door cell in hand to find... quiet.....( besides my swearing) three mirrors and a ton of plastic glittering under the streetlamp. The car behind me 40+feet took some paint and traded mirrors but mine took the brunt on both drivers side doors. I cant use the back at all and I need two hands for the front now. I have all my plastic thank god and they didn't break a window. Must have been doing 40 drunk...... they should be so glad they didn't stop:Flame:zzz Now before I So what does anyone get from insurance these days for an old 82 gl? I had no major dents or anything!

Well here in seattle the way these lovely snow plows with rubber packing blades took care of the roads, we were left with 6" tall cowpatty sized chunks everywhere and it tore apart my already weak steering rack. Since the idea of real snow in seattle is like kittens landing on the moon, everyone skipped work and I don't get my rack till next monday, after I was told it would be finished by wednesday the 24th. Can't blame um'..... but it sucks. I'm just glad no one has been hurt.

Will these peugot wheels work
Yo'J replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I wouldn't go 14"s (again) just due to tire selection. 15"s are much more common. -
i ripped a front wheel of my subaru!
Yo'J replied to bicycle_ben's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
C'Mon! I can send you a couple bearings if you are missing some. They work great on the fridge with harddrive magnets! Make sure you don't have a cracked cup like I did. Clean it "before" you go to the store for parts like booties. I had to turn around again and go to the jy to get a whole new axle....then go to return the part??? Well, I didn't, Just tossed it up for spares I'll use later. Just trying to save you a trip. -

That does look quite fixable if the top hats are ok. It does look like the jy is going to be your next best friend. In the picture I don't see were a ball joint is, its just this flat piece of metal, missing the hole for it. If the knuckle is fine and the rubber boot kept the strut from getting damaged and miracles come to save you, did I forget steering and brakes?, (its still attached) the empi booties are like ten to fit'een bucks, for the axles, and balljoints 25 new at napa. I read a post were he was talking axles apart at the pull a part so as to check for wear and getting like three of four sets worth for like 20 a piece. That and an alignment and your on! price point. Oh, GD's write up rocks, come to think of it! http://home.comcast.net/~trilinear/axle_rebuilding.html I'm so hoping that doesn't happen to me right now, I'm beginning to have my own issues on the same topic. -
Well I think I'm gonna get a fix before a conversion after playing today:) It seems like a part that won't be hard to find and not to expensive Some new ball joints and tierod bushings while its up and allignment when its down. As soon as its snow free I'm under some cars, I'm not jacking in snow to do the crawl, especially just to look.

have you tried telling anyone where it is? lots of people know the roads.

Dang! I want a subi dumper! That is great!

I haven't been able to find one in the local area and the price of a new rack, manual or power, just pushes me to want to do it right the first time.... and with the noise in the front..... fast. I think I need a new rack,..... soon. Its my dd and I'm planning an ej swap anyway. All the parts are in but this and the snow and cold is the only thing stopping me from pulling this ej22, to get this hulk out of my yard and for the progress I want to make towards this car. If I can push the ball, I'll get the heads done up nice, new seals and belts and a full wireing look-over and a welded set-up on this lift its got almost all new suspention, brakes, rear discs and its all ready to go.....But this. This economy..... I just don't want to buy it twice and I think it might just have to happen that way. I know, I know, (I'm thinking to my self) buy the new manual and replace it till a miracle ea81 fully working power steering rack just happens to show up in front of me. I have to say ...this site has really opened up a new world for me to understand cars and to unleash some creativity on the world. I thank you all.

O.K. what "real" work is it going to take to put power steering in with out the whole crossmember from a doner? I am going to drop a ej in my roo from a power everything 2wd 90 leg auto ( I hear my wireing will be fun) but if its going to get re-plumbed to the ej, why dont I start afresh? Isn't it just the box and plumbing, pump and anti rub/vibrational stuff like everywhere else? I don't see what the big deal is, I know a factory can make some nicer looking parts but function and safety seems really doable. Am I missing something? Drilling a hole for grommets and such isn't hard http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/images/smilies/subaruzall.gif, brackets? What? Is the mounting just that bad? I have pics of the boxes but no crossmembers. I have a 82 gl wagon 5spd 2" lift on 14"pugs with toyo a/t at 26.6" and rear coils. soon to be ejed and I hope with power steering, wainscotted rear, fully wooded deck, uncracked front window, fully working drivers window, then, fenders, fresh painy (by me) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/images/smilies/boozing.gif b r green with rallyx stripes and a light rack with a yellow saftey beacon and floods just lower than my custom wood lumber rack:banana: oh oh oh and working rear window defrost:horse: then winch and off road bumpers. oh god I love this weather!
