  1. That's about what I figured. How would I know if it is sticking open or closed?
  2. I was just wondering if anyone knows how an anti-diesling valve on the Hitachi carb can be checked to determine if it is operating properly. I have a 76 wagon 1.4L engine. Also, what would be the consequences of just removing the little plunger in there if I suspect it may be malfunctioning?
  3. Thanks, I'll definitely check that out. it seemed like a weird area to be seeing rust.

  6. Here's some pictures of my new wagon... once i fugure out how to load pictures
  7. Yeah, the tip is worn, but the threads seem OK. It still has a pitch at the tip, but there is an abrupt decrease in the circumference about a 1/4 inch up. It's probably not quite as bad as I'm making it out to be, so I think that I will try and smooth it out with some sandpaper and see if that helps, otherwise I'll be looking for a replacement.
  8. I recently removed my fuel/air mixture screw on my Hitachi carb and found it to be severely worn. Is there any way to machine these screws or buy replacements? It seems like you could reshape the end and the screw would just be a little shorter, but still work?
  9. Hi, like many, I was having a lot of idling problems. With the idle adjusting screw all the way out, I could adjust the mixture screw and it would idle high just fine, but when I tried to get the idle down it would run like crap. Turns out that someone had set the throttle cable too tight, so even when the idle adjusting screw was all the way out, the carb was getting WAY too much gas. I backed out the idle adjusting screw and loosened the throttle cable and it made a huge difference, so if you are having an idle problem, I would definitely check that out first since it is easy to correct (although that is probably obvious to many!)
  10. Thanks guys. It appears that I have the 1400. I'm not sure about the 5-speed, but I'm thinking someone must have replaced the 4-speed at some point. I went to the U-pull it off foster and the guy said they don't have any 70's at any yard, so that was kind of a bummer. I have gotten the Hitachi running fairly well now. Someone had the throttle cable set too tight, so even with the adjusting screw all the way out it was getting too much gas. Once I readjusted the cable it started running a LOT better. Unfortunately, the idle control screw is pretty worn at the end. I'm going make a new post for that.
  11. Hi all, I just purchased my first Subaru, a 1976 DL wagon. It's Vital Orange with a five speed with front wheel drive. It's got some minimal surface rust, and one of the parking brake cables is busted, but other than that it's in pretty good shape. The engine needs some work, but I think that is mostly related to the Hitachi carb. Based on what I've read I think I'm going to try and swap it for a Weber. Anyhow, I know someone who has a Weber 32/36 off of a Pinto and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I would need to get it onto the Subi. Also, how can I figure out what size engine I have?? Most all the stickers are no longer readable, and I'm already tired of looking like an idiot at the part store (right before they tell me they don't have my parts). Also, and this is a long shot, but does anyone in the portland, OR area know the status of 1st gens in salvage yards around here, or anyone with their own "private" salvage yard? Thanks! Fred
