  1. I'm not sure if it's an important part of the upgrade. It's more of a "you'll be foolish if you don't do it while you're in there" upgrade. The engine is out. You're doing something to get more power. Delta cams are pretty inexpensive, and they give power. The Frankenmotor by itself is a great upgrade, but why people would go through everything to do the Frankenmotor and not do cams, I will never know. Jacob
  2. Brats feel a lot more tank-like than more powerful Subarus. Mine also feels more connected to the road. I love that I can floor it in the Brat wherever I go and nothing bad happens. If I try that in my other car, I'll end up in a ditch/yard with at least $5k in damage. When my Brat was stock, I took it on a 500 mile trip one weekend. Something happened halfway through, and on a major hill coming home, I kept having to downshift. I started getting worried when I downshifted to 1st, because after that, there were no more gears:confused: Have you done the mounts yet? Jacob
  3. Closed course, professional driver, I'm sure:rolleyes: You actually contributed 5th gear and the case, I thought. The STI gearset and fancy diffs actually makes it feel a lot more controlled than it did before. Your 5th gear is a little odd. I thought it would be more of a cruising/fuel economy gear, but it actually has enough power behind it. I have yet to have to downshift from 5th for a hill or anything. I just wish more people knew how gutless a stock Brat is, that way more people would flip a lid when I go by:lol: Jacob
  4. Well, my engine has been shaking like a chihuahua lately, so I opted to get a fancy 4-piece mount set from importimageracing.com for $200. They're supposedly the same as the Group N mounts. They have the same durometer readings and the Group N mounts, and they look the same, so I'm inclined to believe it. Shhhh! Don't tell anyone they're Megan Racing mounts! All I have to do is install them, and nobody will know. The stock 5-speed mount is a joke compared to the new one: It's a little hard to see, but here's the transmission mount attached to GD's custom crossmember. For his hard work on my pitch stopper, I gave GD the one that came with this kit. It's a standard dogbone type, which is useless on the Brat. I got my first Subaru about 6 years ago, and since then, I've driven quite a few. I thought the bogging/lurching thing when you initially push on the gas is just how they worked. I drove the Brat around a little bit with the new mounts. It's a very good upgrade. There is no bogging/lurching on throttle and on lift-off. Shifting is much more precise. I think it actually sounds meaner now, too, somehow:lol: I'll definitely be doing this on STI as well. Jacob
  5. Subaru set it up the way they did for a reason. Your car will run ok, but not at its best. You'll run a little rich at certain points because the computer is dumping in the amount of fuel it thinks it needs based on the amount of air it thinks is coming in. Since some of that air is going to the atmosphere instead of into the engine, the computer is dumping more fuel than it needs to. It won't be enough to foul your plugs or O2 sensor for a very, very long time, though. Does that make sense? It'll be fine for your drive to the dealership or Home Depot or whatever to get the things you need to fix it. Jacob
  6. It may be, but with the STI intercooler, I don't know how much needs to be rerouted. That's why I suggested looking up that mod on NABISCO as well. But yeah once you know the differences, you should be able to get a good idea of what goes where. If you were in Portland, I'd let you take a look at mine. Jacob
  7. "Hoes" are nasty women. "Hose" is a hose:lol: It sounds to me like you bought it from someone who had an aftermarket blowoff valve. That person (probably in high school) took it off before selling the car to you and did a poor job of putting everything back. I'd look up the STI intercooler swap on NABISCO. Also, while on there, look up how to install an aftermarket blowoff valve. That may give you some clues as to what was cut/removed/messed with. There will probably be pics of how it should look. You can also find someone in the area with a stock WRX and compare. You may also try opposedforces.com. You can look up your engine, and hopefully there will be some kind of vacuum diagram or something. Jacob
  8. I was trying to point out that "best" or "better" is in the eye of the beholder. Without knowing your budget or what you intend to do with the engine, nobody can really be that helpful. Jacob
  9. Where to start? First of all, that's not a question, it's an imperative sentence. Second of all, I doubt anyone here is going to explain all the different EJ heads. Third, different heads are "better" for different things. Knowing nothing about you and what you intend to do with that engine, I'd venture to say that the "better" head for an EJ22T would be the one you can get for the least amount of money. Jacob
  10. That sucks, but I think I have you beat: March 8th was just fine for me. March 22nd is 3 days after I go in for back surgery. I told Rebecca, but I guess she's cool with me hemorrhaging on the course:-\ Jacob
  11. Your school and cars look really fun, but the students will get busted down to a POS 2wd Rabbit or something the minute they try to do real stage rally. That's the only thing I meant. Thanks again for growing the sport, and you can count on me showing up in my POS for the rallyxs:grin: Jacob
  12. Welcome. I'm still a little skeptical about starting someone off with one of those fancy cars, but thank you very much for growing the sport that I love. Jacob
  13. That's odd. The website still says May 8th. Are you trying to trick people into not showing up? Jacob
  14. Yeah, I've seen video of rally cars hitting a bump, and the strut flies up through the hood. I'd hate to get a DNF because of that:lol: I was thinking about just one pair of holes, and using math to decide where they should be:banana: Jacob
  15. If I remember right, one person did it, and it was for a lifted Subaru. If you're just looking for a replacement, check the classifieds on here. carfreak has some Brat Turbo springs that would be an upgrade. I got a pair of RX springs from there, which are also an upgrade. Hell, if you put down what kind of car needed the spring replacement, I'm sure someone would have a set. Jacob
  16. I was also thinking about that. At least it would give me the ability to adjust it easier. Just move the holes around vs. re-cut and re-weld every time I want to change. Plus I could keep the car narrower, which means fewer cones being hit. Jacob
  17. We'll see what wheels/tires I end up with. What exactly was your setup? Just the control arms, or EA82 axles, knuckles, crossmember, etc.? Jacob
  18. Hmm, yeah, I sort of assumed you tried, or else you wouldn't have done the welding/sleeving thing. I know you can do it with EMPI axles, but you'd be hard-pressed to beat ShawnW's price. Jacob
  19. Thanks. I was actually researching that yesterday. Great minds, I guess:grin: I haven't gotten very far yet, but that may very well be the way I end up going. Jacob
  20. I think most people would choose a transmission that had a locking center, rather than welding one with a VC. Thanks. Definitely come out. It's like crack to me:) On a separate note, this pic makes me think I should do something about the Brat's positive camber: Jacob
  21. Pics are up: http://www.pdxsports.com/  Jacob
  22. That's some good advice. 4" backspacing would translate into 1" positive offset on a 14x6 wheel, right? I can't seem to think for myself today... Jacob
  23. I'm running some pretty wide 15" 6-lug wheels I got from Summit. I'm looking into a rallyx setup with 14" rally tires and wheels. I was thinking about going to Les Schwab and asking for steelies in the right specs. Assuming, I guess, a 14"x6" wheel, what kind of backspacing/offset would I need to get? I want to make sure they're tucked in under the fender a bit more than my current 15" wheels. Thanks. Jacob P.S. I searched, but I couldn't find numbers. Les Schwab will want numbers, because they sure as hell won't have anything in the computer for a 6-lugged Brat:)
  24. Oh, ok. They were the same on the aftermarket axles I got. I've heard that they're the same between a lot of generations of Subarus, but I guess not this combination. Jacob
  25. Oh, ok. I sort of thought I was missing something obvious when I was typing that out. Jacob
