how do i tighten my belt?
biffbradford replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've got "the red pipe", 1" for prying on things. Then there's the "HF" hammer for pounding (someone welded their initials on it). jw milwaukee -
Will take some better photos, but here's a couple to start: Front to back ... '87 XT Turbo with Hella 550 amber fogs below the bumper and 100watt spots mounted on the hood. Standard shock/spring conversion, 2 inch 'flex pipe' exhaust with glasspack muffler. '87 VW GTI 1.8L 16v (needs motor work), Bilstein/Newspeed suspension, 2" exhaust, 7' C band satellite dish ! '92 Legacy L wagon, 2.2L 16v, 210k miles, daily driver. No mods yet. More to follow as I winterize everything. John Wilke Milwaukee

Oh ... click a size ... and there are the prices. Hey, I'm only a rookie ! Cool stuff though. I'd put one of those 10"x48" SUBARU on each rear quarter panel off my XT if I had the guts. (Talk about a cop magnet). jw milwaukee

185/80 tire suggestions?
biffbradford replied to AKIRA's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have the older Cooper Wintermaster in that size ( I think ) on my XT. The same mold is available from Vulcan Tire or Tire Rack. They look like this: When I put these on, I liked them so much I talked a friend into putting them on his Volvo sedan. The day we went to get them it snowed 10 inches. I tossed him the keys to my XT Turbo 4wd and hung on. We'd stop at a red light next to a camaro, or even 4x4 pickup and on green, he'd just FLOOR IT. We'd accelerate like it was the 4th of July ! Incredible. For a _snow_ tire, this kind of tread pattern is hard to beat. John Wilke Milwaukee -
Good, Cheap CB sugestions?
biffbradford replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have the Uniden Pro510XL. It fits in the dash of my XT where the cassette player was. It hears well and I always get good reports on the signal and audio. For the XT, I use a 48" base loaded whip with a trunk mount. The antenna needs to be grounded to the car for good results. For my wagon, I use a mag mount in the center of the roof. I guess mounting it on the rack would work 'okay', but the roof acts as a ground plane so I'd think direct mounting on the roof is better. http://www.uniden.com/productpop/00_productpop.cfm?prd_code=PRO510XL John Wilke WB9UAI Milwaukee (been an amateur radio operator for 26 years !) -
EA82 under steer problem
biffbradford replied to soobme's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
We're talking gravel right? Approaching the turn, twitch the wheel to the inside a bit to set up an oversteer slide, then use the gas to modulate the slide. What kind of tires 'ya using on the gravel? You might need some more tread ... I know my half worn 'all season' tires on my XT will swim like a fish on the gravel ... very squirmy ! John Wilke Milwaukee (I need to find some time to work on my XT ! :boohoo: ) -
got pulled over in my soob
biffbradford replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's called 'good police work'. I recon that's how they catch a lot of guys with warrants, drugs in the car, ETOH on your breath, stolen good on the back seat, assult rifles, that kind of stuff. No beef against you, he's just doing his job. Only 2 months left on the demerit points against my license for a speeding ticket ... then I won't have to drive like grampa any more. There are so many different conditions to contend with during the winter. Dry, ice, slop, deep snow, and packed snow. I think in general, for slop and deep snow you need a narrow, big lugged tread. Narrow to cut through deep snow (not plowing) to the hard pack, lugs to grip, or lugs to channel out the water in slop conditions. For ice, you need a soft compound with either studs, or an abrasive, sand paper like surface. For hardpack, a wider tire is okay because you're not moving snow, you just need grip. Here a wider tire with lots of little grooves, or sipes work well. Although your narrow, lugged tire will do a good job as well. I guess it all depends on where you want the best performance. I prefer the narrow lugged style like the Hakkapelitta 10's, or the Cooper Wintermaster (no longer made, but similar patterns are available from other companies). jw milwaukee

rear wheel bearing (help, drive axle stuck)
biffbradford replied to Martin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You can get that inner ring out with a ballpeen hammer and a large punch. jw milwaukee -
Okay, I'm going to be replacing the push button 4wd, single range, 5sp transmisison in my '87 Turbo XT, any one have any tips to make the job go easy? I've never pulled an xmission before. I've done the half shafts, timing belts, radiator, air to coil suspension swap, and now it's time to try something harder. I've got the new transmission being shipped now, still need to find a new drive shaft, so I've got some time to prepare. Surely I'll replace the clutch, and I guess the exhaust has to come off, so might be a good time to replace that mashed downpipe if I can. Anything else while I'm in there? Tips on getting it in/out? This will be done in the garage, so I guess the ticket is to support the frame on some sturdy blocks. Any suggestions? John Wilke Milwaukee

$68 rear wheel bearings?!?!?
biffbradford replied to All_talk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
2wd or 4wd? http://www.thepartsbin.com has 4wd bearings for $46 per side, seals a few bux each. Free shipping for orders > $50. I've ordered a bunch of stuff from them ... they are quick. jw milwaukee -
Front Brake Pad Replacement on 86 GL
biffbradford replied to SovereignMK's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I can't imagine it being much different than my '87 XT (which is similar to my VW). Behind the caliper there is a bolt just below the pads that runs through the caliper (rather long), loosen this bolt then it will pivot on a similarly looking bolt above the pads. The caliper can also be removed by sliding it off this big 'pin'. You may have to use a small hammer to tap the pads and swing the caliper free. My VW Golf worked the same way. jw milwaukee -
*Ouch ! * I just spent $75 on more paint and was wondering if I spent too much ! I've got more time than money right now, so it's not like I have much choice. :-p John Wilke milwaukee

Summary of my Car...

As far as the valve click ... a quick fix might be using 20W50 oil. Worked for my 'XT. At least until you get around to the oil pump. John Wilke Milwaukee -
Take the trim off the clock, etc, and try grabbing the radio/tape deck ... then pull straight out. I don't recall there being anything holding them in other than gravity and a snug fit. If I recall correctly when I took mine out initially ... I was cursing and swearing :temper: ... then it suddenly popped out. :-\ jw milwaukee

What ever is above the radio comes out first, then the radio slips straight out. There aren't any special tools or secret majic chants or anything. jw milwaukee
