  1. I work in a shop where we replace those sometimes. Usually penzoil carries some. If you can't find any from any auto stores. You can usually get someone to replace them at Jiffy lube, grease moneky...places like that.
  2. "Often Imitated, Never Duplicated" Always duplicated...you know what that is...4 wires. A fancy box. And a resistor. Save your $65.00 and go to radio shack. Buy the same stuff for less then 5 bucks. All you're doing is tricking the computer to advance the timming a slight amount. You can find "how to"s on this all over the net.
  3. You know what amazes me...not the people that come up with this things *they're actually smart for making a $5.00 part and marking it up 100% or more* But the people who actually buy these things, then think they can actually feel a difference. Hmmmm infact...I think I am going to take apart my conair hair dryer...give the parts a fancy spray paint job. And sell em for ohhhhh how about....$64.95. Then I'll run him out of business. Muwhahahahaha
  4. 1st choice 2000 or newer Toyota celica 2nd choice 2004 or newer Honda civic. 3rd choice Probably the bus. So in reality. There is only 5 cars I would actually drive daily. The Subaru Legacy, The Subaru Imprezza, The Celica, The Civic, and of course my 88 CRX. The Imprezza and CRX are my 2 dream cars though. But if we're talking strictly AWD vehicles. I have never had anything better then a subaru. I did at one time have a bmw. But it was 2wd with traction control. And that actually held up nicely.
  5. I have those same exact pioneer subs in my car...only in a bandpass box running on a 500watt amp. They do hit hard...but the only problem is I can never seem to fully rid the spoiler rattle. But right now I am working on my MP3 player for the car. This whole sun-visor cd holder thing is not working to well for me. mmmmmm 999 tracks no waiting, who needs a cd changer when you have that.
  6. I don't really dig that color, nor the aluminum wing...or the painted grill. But thats just my personal taste.
  7. Are you looking for a wagon or a sedan? Cause seriously like someone said, if I could afford it I would buy an 05. When I was still tinting for a subaru dealership I got to drive an 05 legacy gt, and an 05 outback sedan. I thought both were really awesome. P.S. Don't feel bad about the acura thing...lol I have a 1990 acura in front of my house right now.
  8. 2 12" Pioneer IIMP Subs powered by a 2 channel 500 watt amp. Mmmmmm the comfort of vibrating seats. It's fully theft proof too. I took some sersious precautions with this stuff. Still need to drop in my home made MP3 player, the EQ, and a few other things.
  9. Okay so I've replaced the fuel filter, recharged the K&N (I don't usually by those filters but it came with the car) And I dropped in NGK Laser Platinum plugs. I'm averaging 24mpg city/highway. Does that sound about right? Or am I just lead footing it too much. I'm used to driving Jap econo boxes that get about 30mpg. But you also have to remember this is an AWD vehicle that wieghs a crap load. Does anyone have any gas saving tips on these cars? I remember on my acuras I could flip around a vacuum connection, lose about 3-5hp but gained another 3mpg.
  10. OMG I can't beleive that dude is still putting bilge pumps on ebay. Never buy one. I've heard horror stories of people who actually bought them. It's just some guy trying to make a quick buck and he is. It won't increase your performance. All it does is fall apart, pieces go into your engine. And boom your done for. Seriously you would get more power out of a frickin smog pump ran through a filter into your engine (beleive me I know. I did this in my younger wanting to experiment years) Never buy those "electric superchargers" either. They are worthless. It cost money to get performance. And the only way to get performance is to spend money. Or removing weight for free. If you really want to up your performance try lightening your car. For every 11lbs you remove thats close to almost a 1hp gain. Although your not really gaining horsepower it sure will feel like it. And thats a pretty cheap thing to do. For example, remove your spare, and jack. Make sure you have a cell phone and a can of fix-a-flat. Or remove all of your insulating and spray the car down with rubberized undercoating instead. Does the same exact thing only weighs less. Sorry this post is getting long. Time for me to shut up and get back to reading other posts.
  11. Well I picked up my legacy today from the service dept. at Burt Subaru. I have to say I am damn pleased with everything. These new head gaskets look way more beefy then the old ones. They replaced on recal the hazard switch and the front spring guards. Then they also replaced the upper radiator hose, head gaskets thermostat timming belt valve cover gaskets intake manifold gaskets re-cored the radiator oil change coolant flush and a crap load of other parts They replaced nearly 20 items (don't have the paper work in front of me right now) basically all that was left to do would be new heads and piston rings for a new egine j/k and all for $1,587.93 I don't think I could've got a better deal then that. I think I'm just really pleased with the way these new head gaskets look.
  12. If you are going to replace the head gaskets yourself make sure to buy the gasket from the dealership. Not some felpro gasket. Subaru has updated their 2.5 head gaskets to apparently prevent this from happening again. I guess I will find out. I am picking up my 2.5 from the dealer on monday. I had them recore the radiator, flush the system, drop in another thermostat, replace the head gaskets, replace the timming belt, mill the cylinder heads and block, and then fixed all my recals. Only cost me 1,587.93 Not bad considering the amount of work involved and they were able to do it in 2 days time. So shop around a bit. I did find some shops that would do it for 1,180.00 But I feel a little better taking it to mechanics that I already know. An extra $400.00 to sleep better at night isnt bad.
  13. I won't be able to make this one. My car will be in the shop till about wednesday. dum dum dum...another one rides the bus. dum dum dum.
  14. My gawd people. I've been reading for so long I forgot who even asked the question or what it was about. Anyways, my .02 cents on oil. I used to run valvoline. My buddy from wyotech told me they were taught that the best oils were #1 shell, #2 walmart store brand. (weird eh.) Anyways after installing an oil pressure gauge on one of my cars a while back and running a different brand of oil on every oil change. From my experience halvoline and shell had the most constant oil pressure. The other oils always seemed to fluxuate (sp). I'll never run valvoline or penzoil again. Never did check out modile 1 or castrol though. My one and only experience with synthetic. Dropped it into an engine with 132k miles. (non subaru engine) Drove for about 500 miles. Rear main seal leaked so un gawdly bad. So then stupid me. (this was the younger years) I bought a mechanic in a bottle called cr2 or something like that. Was supposed to cause swelling of the seals to make them stop leaking. Oh yeah they swelled alright. Instead of just a rear main seal, I needed the front seal, cam shaft seals, valve cover gasket, and oil pan gasket. I can't beleive I actually paid 3 dollars to have my engine become super leaky. Anyways I usually just run shell 10w40 or 5w40 when I can find it. And the usually fram oil filter. Mobile 1 and K&N oil filters are only about 15 microns absolute, and if I recal the frams are 22 microns. Don't qoute me on this cause I can remember. But it's really not too much of a difference.
  15. well after reading subdudext6...would be too much trouble to turbocharge one of this guys. plus it would be a shame to run it into the ground with rally-x. Thanks for all the quick info guys.
  16. So driving home form work today. Debating about a new rally-x car. Was thinking early legacy turbo. But then thought to myself. I wonder if anyone has turbocharged an xt6...or if anyone has even thought of this before (which I'm sure someone has) and maybe started to figure out what all it would take. Any thoughts?
  17. I don't know how I got so lucky when I broke the timming belt on my 97 2.5 last week. But no internal damages are showing. Anyways the car seems to run right. Will find out 100% for sure when the head gasket is replaced this comming up week.
  18. Frankly who cares if the salesman is in the seat. Stomp on that mofo, slam on the brakes, do extremely radical turns. Take it from someone who has bought 19 cars. If it is a private owner or a dealer who gives a damn if they are there or not. If they give you any guff at all. Just say "Hey, who is paying your paycheck...YOUR CUSTOMERS!" If you aren't allowed to fully test the capabilites of a vehicle you are looking at how do you even know you would like it. Just as long as you don't break the car you are fine. Worst the could happen. Sales man flips out. And you just say. Well hmmm I was about to drop 30k cash on this car. But since you're such a rude rump roast I will take my business to the next subaru dealership in the next city over. 3 words. Salesmen are desperate. If they knew they could sale you the car they would let you drive it into a lake to test it for leaks. This is why they have what they call the demo car. One car of every model specifically on the lot for demo...(or test drives). They already know people abuse the hell out of em. And you couldn't abuse it on the test drive anymore then the lot techs. So just don't let them push you around. When you go to the next dealership if you have a salesman being an rump roast. Ask to speak with the general manager. And let them know just how much of an rump roast the sales man was. 2 weeks ago I drove an Audi rs6 only a few around. 0-60 in under 3 seconds. And I can tell you now, I felt 0-60 in under 3 seconds on the car, and felt it up to 120mph in the city. Sorry I kinda went on and on in this one. But just remember you're the one in charge at the dealers. You can do whatever you want.
  19. sorry setright is right. Fill the block first then the radiator. I would still try burping the system afterwards just to play it safe.
  20. talking with a crap load of subaru mechanics this week since I work with them I learned a few things about the cooling system. Mainly how to fill it without those blasted air bubbles. Apparently the only thing the subaru dealerships do differently to fill up the coolant system is to fill it from the upper radiator hose. of course you know fill it from the radiator, then remove the upper radiator hose from the radiator and start filling it up. Apparently this removes one huge air pocket. Thus no need to burp the system or worry about air pockets. Don't know if anyone knew this just yet. But thought I would post it anyways since it seems to be pretty helpful
  21. yeah I do know how to wrench a car. Unfortunatly I work 6 days a week anywhere from 8-12 hours a day. Another note. I do research my cars so don't be preaching to me. Valuable lesson???? I beleive I have learned just about every single lesson known to man and some not known being that this is my 20th car I've owned. People looking over the car, myself, subaru dealership mechanic, and my friend a wyotech automotive graduate. Long story short. Just going to sell 2 of my cars to afford to pay for these repairs.
  22. So I was having an intermidate over heating problem. Replaced the thermostat, replaced the radiator cap. Replaced the water pump. Flushed the system. Whats the problem....head gasket. quoated on the job a couple thousand dollars. So basically. I just paid $7,200 for a car that is completely screwed over. I now have no vehicle. Thanks to a shaddy private seller. Wonderful world this really is.
