Anyone making a EJ22 wiring harness for swap?
Numbchux replied to subieman's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I'm sure Shawn Still does. but if not (or he's too busy) you could also pm NoahDL88, or myself (although I've been working mostly on newer stuff, and I've got 3 other swap projects that I'd have to finish before I could start on a new harness....) -
it looks flimsy just sitting on the plastic bumper.....but it looks like you've done a good job reinforcing it.
-
no.....I've spent every dime on the other subaru. but I will....
-
looks, space, and options do not make for a good wheeler. ask yourself what you value more. a good looking rig, or an extremely capable one. I did, and no longer own a lifted subaru.
-
if these guys with their lifted trucks are really pushing them to their limits. plan on destroying your car. or spending a fortune. the FAQ is your friend.

hehehe.....I was wondering if anyone would notice. this spring was 10 years since we bought the car....which meant new plates. I put the one on the rear....and haven't changed the one on the front. hopefully I'll get around to doing it before it hits the road again :-p yea, I've worked with POR 15. good stuff....but more money than I wanted to spend for this project. I figure this stuff lasted 20 years without even being painted, just painting them will probably get them more than the car will last. progress? well, I bought an air compressor, and an impact wrench. finally got the pinion flange off the rear diff, put the new seal in it. put it back in. got the new bearings in the front knuckles got the trailing arms and control arms in. got the poly sway bar bushings ordered (to save money, and time, I'm not doing a full set, just the sway bars, endlinks, and leading rods) still need to order the rear wheel bearing tool, and get those taken apart/repacked still need to order all my wheel bearing seals still need to decide on a spring rate, and order springs (I'm actually considering keeping these uber stiff springs, just to delay the hassle/$$, but Noah has already claimed them...) still need to buy tires (at this rate, might as well go right for my snow tires, we got flurries last week ) haven't had much time. I've been working on wiring harnesses in all of my free time. and a local guy has agreed to hire me to EJ-swap a rust-free EA82 GL wagon he found. so, unfortunately, my own car has gotten pushed pretty far down the list

my buddy bought an '86 GL wagon that the PO had started a valve job, but didn't finish (replaced the valves, didn't reassemble the motor). when my buddy was putting it all together, he put too much RTV on the cam case, and the cam was starved of oil. so it seized. we put a new cam/case on it, new timing belt, and it's run very well ever since (well....as well as a feedback carbed EA82 ever will :-\ )

I love subarus. I hate the EA82 motor. I've been left on the side of the freeway sooo many times because of the stupid EA82. whether it was the distributer, timing belts, blown intake mani gaskets, etc. etc. etc. we bought 2 '92 subarus about 12 years ago, both FWD, both auto, one a loyale, one a legacy. my mom put 215k worry-free miles on the legacy in that time period. with nothing but basic maintenence. the loyale was left to me......and was quickly replaced. now my mom has moved onto a '01 legacy. in a year and a half, it's already seen close to 50k miles, with zero problems. it's got a little wheel bearing noise, and the headlights mysteriously failed (turned out that the previous owner used nothing but electrical tape to attach the new headlight plugs...), and that's it. now I've got the motor from the '92 legacy in my loyale. motor had 245k on it when I swapped it. I've put almost 20k on it since then, mostly in town....delivering pizzas. zero major problems. it had lots of wheel bearing/axle noise....but I'm replacing all that with newer, better stuff. and my dad drives a '94 legacy GT (actually...I'm driving it while I'm uber upgrading my loyale....he can drive the caravan), $350 ebay special, listed as a parts car.....a few days of work, and it's as reliable as anything. long story short. if they've been maintained well, and isn't an EA82 engine, they're extremely reliable. heck, even the EA82, if maintained meticulously, can be a reliable motor.

it would?! huh.....well....plan B then. I park on hills, all the time (Duluth has been referred to as the little San Fransisco more than a few times). so I need to have a parking brake. for now, I'm just using my 200SX calipers, but there will come a time when I will want to upgrade.

you could just use a hydraulic one. a local guy is doing that in his impreza ('96 Lx getting an '05 WRX drivetrain). it just plumbs into your brake lines, and puts pressure on just the rear brake lines.

Rear disk brake conversion disks?
Numbchux replied to DaveT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
any turbo EA82 has rear discs. hubs and backing plates are different between FWD and 4WD. you can bolt FWD rotors to 4WD hubs (although you wouldn't otherwise have to seperate them....) -
looking for the body wiring diagram for an 87 wagon
Numbchux replied to subynut's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
get your hands on a Chilton's manual. they have all the factory service manual diagrams in them. they're labeled for a loyale, but everything is virtually identical (only differences I've ever found were wire colors) I've never seen them online.... -
torsion bar = more rear travel. As far as Subaru's go, I haven't really noticed much usable difference from one to the other. other than the torsion bar allowing more travel (although frequently that leads to broken axles), EA82 being a bit more cooperative to an EJ swap, and EA82 motors sucking out loud :-p .

Rear Wheel Bearing removal tool?
Numbchux replied to Numbchux's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I appreciate the offer, Tim! But I would like to have one. I'm a bit worried about these bearings. it's possible that some fresh grease will fix the problem, but I may have to go in in a year or so and put in some new ones. -
well....I think since the title of the picture is "buggy engine" that's a pretty safe bet!
-
That right there.....is automotive porn :slobber: extremely nice work. I hope to pull the engine out of my car next summer and do a bottom up rebuild, and something much like what you've done!

Rear Wheel Bearing removal tool?
Numbchux replied to Numbchux's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that's the one. $30?! yikes. might have to bite the bullet though. he checked the paper catalog (all the guys that work at the parts counter at this particular dealership are active members of the local subaru club), but was not able to find anything. he said he'd keep looking, but thought I'd ask here first. -
On my old trailing arms, I got away with using a punch to get the wheel bearings free.....but these ones are much too stubborn. I contacted my local dealer about getting me the tool to remove them (Wrench 925550000 according to the '88 FSM), and he said it didn't register. anyone know where I could get ahold of it? maybe have an updated part number?
-
yea, 15" wheels > 14s not the cheapest option....but TireRack has BFG A/Ts in a 27x8.5x14 on closeout for $94 a piece.
-
a couple hours of sandblasting (would've been less if the @#$@#%^ compressor would've just stayed running ), and you've got this: the paint is drying now. some rustoleum rusty metal primer, and professional grade gloss black......mmmmmmmmmmmmm
-
^^those are definitely M/Ts. looks to be a BFG tread pattern....or a knockoff of them. because you're using a link to the page, instead of a link to the image. right click on the image, and copy the image location, then you get this:

FWD EA82T for EJ swap; Spline Count & Tranny Matching
Numbchux replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
FWD turbos had 25 splines. the front axles that I was running in my wagon all year (with RX FT4WD trans) came from a FWD 4EAT turbo wagon. you sound like you probably have your reasons. but I don't understand why you need an EA82t chassis, or why you don't want an adapter plate.... and you could also convert it to AWD/4WD pretty easily. -
I'd drive it home. I've driven many miles with a broken clutch cable. even drove across town and back here in Duluth (stoplights/stopsigns, and steep hills!)
-
yep, select monitor. if it was an OBD II car, it'd be more useful. but there's nothing you can get there that you can't get from the flashing CEL. just make sure you have the read mode connectors around.
-
huh, mine does that a little bit. but only under 1500 rpm and under a lot of load (WOT, at least 3rd gear, or 2nd up a steep hill). then it feels like it's running rich, and if I ease off the throttle to about 3/4, then floor it @ 2k or so. while mine is out of commission this month, neutral, VSS, and starter switches will all be wired into the ECU. and I'll be connecting the CEL to the light on the dash. I shall see if I notice any difference (although it'll be some time yet before I can drive it).
