  1. yep, that kit wouldn't help you much, but there are a few of us that'll prepare a harness for you, myself included.
  2. glad to hear it's still alive (or alive again...)! now, get that tranny in, and get those wires in control
  3. I've done many black diamond trails up here. Watched morgan do part of the rock gorge: http://www.mnchopshop.org/images/offroad/jul05_crawl4cure/morganm_rock_gorge_01.AVI http://www.mnchopshop.org/images/offroad/jul05_crawl4cure/morganm_rock_gorge_02.AVI (first 1/3 or so of this trail) I made it through tail-pipe alley at the Iron-Range OHV park.....had a lot of jeep guys standing around going the car barely made it home. that was the day I decided that with the equipment I have, or lack thereof (garage and welder to be exact), a subaru wasn't going to cut it. and I really hate rock crawling with a 5-speed, not to mention the smell of burning clutch. I'm just mad that we didn't get it on video (although we did get my buddies jeep the next day...available on DVD...pm me if you'd like). subarus make awesome trail riders, but they lack so much to be doing rock crawling. yes, you can weld the rear end, and throw in a divorced tcase, and make beefy control arms and radius rods. but that's alot of work (or money for those of us that would have to pay for the fabrication), and you've still got a 5-speed. I'll have a running toyota with an auto, more flex, better gears, and 35s for about $2k....

well, up here you can enter in the 'SI' class. which I believe stands for special interest. it's not competitive at all, just for people having fun. only rule is that you can't enter in it again if you've won it in the past... also, I've heard there may be a loophole for me, since my donor car was the same year as my loyale ('92).
  5. looks like you've got a torn DOJ boot in there....better tend to that :-p nice work!
  6. a buddy of mine has a FWD impreza (23 spline) and the parts shop (grrr....napa....) gave him 25 spline axles. it just sheared off the roll pin, no damage to the stubs at all.
  7. no class restrictions or anything, this is real informal. we go out, set up a course, and take turns timing each other's laps.... I'm running Cooper Weathermaster studless snow tires. 155/80r13. sweet tires!! Austin bought them for the XT before it's trek across the country to MN, and the new owner put pugs on it, so I got these for free...
  8. a little of each. it fits pretty good, but not great. there's alot of zip ties involved...
  9. well, that cutaway shows it having timing chains, so it can't have too much in common with your typical EJ block...
  10. I'm sure it'll have the same bellhousing as any other EJ engine. I'd be worried about wiring. the last all new engine they put out (EZ30R) has an immobilizer system built into the ECU/harness, that makes it virtually impossible for the engine to run off the stock ECU in a car other than the one it came in. but I agree...would be way cool.
  11. correction, FWD legacies still had 25 splines. ONLY FWD IMPREZA axles have 23 splines.
  12. like...this vs this ?? mine's all up under the dash, where the stock stuff was. I pulled the ECU out, and I replaced it with the EJ22 stuff.
  13. aha, sorry, then they'll fit. the rear discs have plenty of clearance.
  14. the lever should be on the passenger side (it is for the center lock on my RX trans). but you can follow the cable from the vacuum diaphragm to it. that's what skip was talking about tieing the ropes to. while it's up in the air, try moving the suspected wheel around, if it moves side to side at all, your ball joint is very shot, if it turns, your tie rod end is shot. it does sound like it could be one of those...
  15. the EA82 is scrap aluminum when compared to the EJ22. and the EA82 makes most other engines look like junk. IMHO, the only reason the EJ22 isn't made exactly as it was made for almost 10 years, is because of all the luxury options that they added to the cars, they needed more power. and so the motor demanded redesigning. the new motors are still good, but you really can't live up to the phase 1 EJs. the other reason they're so popular, is they're of the perfect age to be cheap. a whole donor car can be had for a grand or less. if I could get an EZ30R for the same cost, I'd be all over that....but IIRC it has SEVEN main bearings!!! so it must be total junk
  16. hmmm...did you try doing a U-turn to be sure it isn't working? maybe put the front end on ramps, and see if the arm on the side of the tranny moves...

    T-case

it would solve the problem of the axle and front diff interfering with the oil pan...in fact, I bet that's why it was developed.
  18. yep, that's the same body style that mine came off of. my dad thinks it was an '87....

    T-case

haha....different kind of V-drive Inboard skiboat with direct drive, but with the engine in the back so it can't plane correctly for wakeboarding. I've never heard about or seen a lada tcase, but I figured since esh is in Australia, maybe they have different availability.
  20. they will clear in the rear, but will most likely rub on the front calipers.

I know WJM does it, and quite competitively IIRC I intend to get out and do it next summer. although I'll get screwed by the classes if I ever want to get very competitive because of the engine swap....
  22. a body lift. that's what we're referring to. dropping the entire suspension and drivetrain.

    T-case

bushbasher started out with a lada one. I'm pretty sure he had problems with it and then went to a Nissan one instead. 2 shifters for 2 transfer cases. the subaru tcase is part of the transmission, so you still have the high-low range for that, and then the added tcase aswell.
  24. version 2.0! now in pdf format: Download EA2EJ.pdf it will include bookmarks to the major points, but I'm putting that off until it's really done.
