1. front axles are easy, FWD impreza's use a 23-spline inner DOJ cup, just like EA82 N/As. and the axles are the same as the legacy ones (or at least Gen 1 legacies....I can't say about later ones). the trick is driveshaft, as the EJ one won't go into the back of the tranny...and the EA one uses a different center carrier bracket. a custom shaft will probably need to be used. and then there's the crossmember....and linkage. I haven't looked at that yet....
2. AHA, I think you're right! that would explain the misunderstanding! thank you
3. ok, thanks. that's what I was thinking, but my dad kept saying that we're going to need to pulll the dash as we were pulling the wiring out of the legacy donor car....
4. just the motor, it'll be mated to an RX tranny.....but I don't know how it would make a difference
5. you guys that did it....did you pull the dash out of the EA car during the install? or can it be done reasonably just from the driver side with the gauges and stuff removed...
6. don't think there's going to be a DVD this year, but I'll plan on it for next, just not enough footage or time this year (mostly because the only good footage I have, is Austins, and I don't actually have it....). BUT, I just hit the $400 mark today, anyone here want to contribute?! if I win anything in the raffle, I'll offer it up to you people first (but it'll probably be for jeeps...)
7. yes, the center diff can be welded. there's a local guy running hi L wagon with RWD right now. yes, it would bind horribly on the street....don't do it yes, FWD impreza axles fit right onto EA part-time 4WD Dual Range trannies and into your hubs (correct me if I"m wrong here, is there a difference between legacy and imp hubs?, otherwise you could probably swap the 23-spline inner cups onto your legacy axles)
8. tried airing them down?? it doesn't sound like it would help, but it certainly does!! the rocks up here are very sharp (our ORV park is an old Iron Ore mine), and it's amazing what letting 15-20 psi of pressure out of your tires will do!
9. that's just one reason to remove the mechanical fan, and turn the electric one off before going into any water that deep!! case in point! he was not moving very fast either. in fact, if he had been going any slower, he might not have drifted to the other side.....
10. well, since this has turned into a PS vs. non-PS discussion.....I'll throw my experience in there: MorganM removed the PS from his wagon (when it was his anyway), but didn't swap the racks. it's quite hard to get it to turn, I can do it, but not unless I"m moving a little bit.
11. how much of the main harness/ECU is effected by the tranny setup? my donor car is a FWD 4EAT....will that make things drastically more difficult?
12. I haven't measured the black one, but my blue wagon's rear bumper is 24"+ off the ground sorry, yes, we are talking about washington. I just thought I'd throw out the rules in MN for camparison....but I think I just made it more confusing
13. yea, I figured I could just drill and tap the holes, but I don't remember how it went on there, so I'm not sure where to put them....but it doesn't look like there's a place there. ugh, I hope that '88 t-wagon is still at the yard!
14. no attempt at all, they finished it, and IMHO it looks awesome! http://www.htautos.co.uk/8.html
15. so....I pulled an XT6 rear sway bar at the junkyard a couple months ago, and I have no idea how it was mounted. anyone have pics? anyone put a sway bar on a car that didn't come with one? this is going in my '92 loyale wagon, with '85 GL wagon trailing arms......
16. technically passenger vehicles and station wagons are 20" in MN. but 4WD and multi-purpose vehicles are 25"....so I haven't had trouble yet
17. yep, there's a local guy with a huge toyota P/U with removable lower bumper tubes, and removable fender flairs. that way he can drive the rig from the campground to the park without getting hassled (he does anyway, but he can't get ticketed....)
18. yep, as previously stated in this very thread, that's where this set came from, but the key is to get it to fit in an EA82 D/R box and still have the gears mesh properly.
19. uh..... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58465
20. I don't know about WA...but in MN, running from the police in an ORV is an automatic felony, and the vehicle used can be surrendered. so the idea that 'they have to catch me first' is really a bad one!
21. I don't have any MTs.....but I've got 29" ATs, on both rigs, both with power steering racks, but one with the pump removed. Both have held up just fine both on the rocks of former iron ore mines in Northern MN, and the soft, swampy muck of my buddies backyard. what do you mean the R&P didn't like it too much? I've never heard of anyone having any problems.....
22. Mattracks is based out of northern MN. I've seen many vehicles with those equipped on them running offroad. They actually have a pretty serious 'gear' reduction to them. That's why they don't do so hot in mud, they need to be moving faster than that, they also don't exactly have an MT design to them. And because of their upper size, they can have the effect of big tires, without needing the fender clearance. these would actually be perfect for a trail-only subaru. but because they're not streetable, and they don't make them for a subaru, they just don't make sense. GD....I'm interested in where you got your info....sounds like you know what you're talking about, but it completely contradicts what I've seen and heard
23.
They have to catch me first...
and when they do (notice.... 'when' not 'if'), they'll give you a felony, and take away your car. wrong answer
24. I'm wheeling on a set of wal-terrains on morgan's old wagon. they've got lots of miles, and still do pretty well on dry stuff. I air them down to 15-20psi and wheel 'em on the rocks for hours. mud.......not so much, they cake up and turn into slicks real fast.
