  1. I, too, agree with Zap and QMan, there are other much better ways to get your tire off the ground. I went to wally world and got a 'superlift' SUV jack for $35, it'll lift both rear tires off the ground from the diff (front is way easier), and fits in the compartment in the floor of the wagon. A highlift is great, but unless you've got some rock sliders, and huge bumpers, there just isn't a good way to use one on a subie HOWEVER, a good friend of mine from the NSW (North Shore Wheelers...mostly jeeps) was looking at my wheels, and said you could hook it between the spokes of the wheels. Not pretty, but in a pinch, it'll get the car off the ground (kinda hard to change a tire though) cliff notes: Get a floor jack, some lumber, and a comealong.....cheaper....lighter
  2. I didn't touch the plug wires....but I will check them again. I just redid the cam timing yesterday...nothing The only other thing, is while I had it all apart, I removed the timing belt covers, so I no longer have the little mark, but I've got it lined up with the valve cover seam....so that should be right The problem with swapping the drivers side cam, is it's at my parents place...3hr drive. So I've got to try to make do with what I've got... I guess I'll try moving the cam timing one tooth each way, and see how that effects it...
  3. I asked you in a pm...but I'm sure there are other people that might want to know: 1: lights....can you do tabs? also, I've got some real small fog lights I'd like to put between the tubes...is that expanded steel strong enough for it? 2: receiver....I really want to be able to pull a trailer, can you put a receiver in the rear one?
  4. Well....I had a look at how it all went together when i pulled the tower off the '85s block (which is out of the car), so I had an idea of how it all went together, but pretty much took it apart, put the new one up there, and put it back together.... I'm pretty sure that the rocker's are all seated correctly, it took me quite awhile to get it on there (I jacked that side of the car way up in the air ), but I'm pretty sure that worked... sounds like you guys aren't sure whether the cams are interchangeable? it feels like my dad's 300ZX did when the coil wire was shorting out...but there's no logical reason why the ignition system would stop working now. I didn't touch the disty, and the cap/rotor/plugs/wires/coil are all new within the last couple months! Anyone know for sure?! I'm sure there's got to be someone out there that knows....with all this 'gen2' 'gen3' heads, etc. Someone's got to know! I don't have easy access to garage space, so if I have to do this, I want to know it's right! I can try resetting the timing belts in my driveway with mittens on....EASY!
  5. just wonderful.... how hard is it to swap the cams? can I do it on the car? or do i need to take the cam tower off with it?
  6. yep...unfortunately, I've done timing belts a few times, I'm pretty sure I got it right
  7. I tried searching, but only got info on cam seals, and sprockets... anyway, one of the tabs that the valve cover bolts into broke off a couple months ago, I finally got around to wapping the cam tower off my parts car...now the thing runs like crap! I fear the '85 carbed EA82 might have a different one than my '88 SPFI. Please tell me I missed the timing belt by a tooth! but it runs, and I just tried re-doing the passenger side (I did the drivers side twice while I did it, so I'm pretty sure about it), and it didn't help. it feels like it's only running on a cylindar or 2 (not enough horsepower, divided by 2...) EDIT: for anyone searching for this info. I figured out the problem, a rocker had fallen off....the cams turned out to be the same (or at least similar enough to not make a difference)
  8. flyboy....it's the front diff....which is in the tranny case. and I think $700 is just for the 4.44 front gearset, probably not including the stuff for the rear. and I bet he's using his EA82 tranny
  9. I went wheeling in the snow with a YJ, an XJ, and a Yukon over thanksgiving....I think I pulled them each out at least once
  10. no, I think just one for the whole system....
  11. bingo! like this one: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10101/s-10101/p-100000168701/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000168701/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000168701
  12. There's an Idea...a lifted 3dr! hmmm anyway...looks awesome Man! Look like it could use a new pass. side door
  13. it's a completely mechanical speedo, so there's no 'reprogramming' available...and there aren't any aftermarket speedo gears available for our cars....maybe something else would work....I'm not sure if anyone's tried. I've got one of those aftermarket ones, little metal sensors on the driveshaft, little sensor mounted near it...fully reprogrammable speedo. I haven't hooked it up yet though....other things need to be taken care of first.
  14. Thanks, sounds awesome! I just run the OE one, manually switched, and it works great, I've never had overheating problems if the system's holding coolant, and I remember to turn on the fan....unfortunately, the bearing just went out, and I don't want to put in another 20 year old OE fan.... Thanks for the info, sounds like I'm set and yes, I was planning on pulling the bumper, maybe I can bolt on my fog lights while I'm in there!
  15. Great to hear PK!! sorry to hear you guys still won't acknowledge another supplier
  16. I know DrKrazy did it with project cheap, but maybe some others have aswell I'm removing the A/C condenser (or is it the expander....the one behind the grill....) tomorrow, and would like to put in a nice, aftermarket electric fan there, I'm just wondering how one would go about finding one that would fit (sizes, etc.), and how to mount it.... ideas?
  17. typically, I would agree with you there...but the sticky doesn't have the info he's looking for. it doesn't even have SJR as an option! (www.sjrlift.com) iteamsubaru: they're all pretty comparable, just look around, and see what you want. Ozified and AA both offer 3 & 4" kits, and SJR offers 3 1/2" and 6". The SJR design is a bit more difficult to install (cutting/welding required), and frankly, the cast aluminum scares me, although SJR himself has used his wagon like mad with no problems....AA has a group buy going on right now, so that might be your cheapest/easiest/fastest route, although there's nothing wrong with an ozified kit either. There isn't much difference, essentially just price and availability. I've 'worked' with all three companies to some extent. And as I've said before, if PK of ozified had been as easy to contact as AA or SJR, my wagon would've been BYB lifted before AA even came on the market....I don't want to knock PK, but it's the truth, and I know other people have had the same issue. There's also the Mudrat79 route, but just check either of the stickies in the old gen forum 'calling john bloom' or similar to see about his business habits There's a reason I'm running an AA lift, and I love the thing!
  18. The question is......will the backlight still work? also, I think with the design difference of the EA82s, this is probably way easier on EA81s....
  19. Me too...but it served well, and fell victim to Iowa/Minnesota Road salt...and it's parts have become invaluable to keeping my '88 wagon alive as the '85 only had ~140k on it, while the '88 has ~225k on it, but isn't rusted out. and don't worry, I think I got most of the parts
  20. Yep, stock D/R trans uses a 3.90 final gear ratio, and if someone could find a way to put 4.44s in a D/R case, THEY WOULD BE A GOD, AND I WOULD WORSHIP THEM FOREVER!!!!! I think someone did the math, and 4.44's would allow for ~29" tires with the same gearing as 3.90s and 22s.... it'd be like having stock drivetrain, with the clearance of 29s!!!!!! I'm SOOOO HAPPY!!!! sorry...
  21. Well, my '88 wagon runs quite well, except for my little timing belt tensioner incident last week....but I fixed it the next day, thanks to the parts cars: '92 loyale 3AT FWD, awaiting D/R swap from: '85 gl wagon, very much parted out, looks way worse than this pic now it's just an empty shell, awaiting the crusher so 1 and 2
  22. Yea, it's been discussed, and I think the general concensus was that it might be possible, but WAY more work than just removing/replacing the rear axle like 18 thousand times.....or something
