Wow...you're lifting a 3AT?? hope you like replacing them, or leaving stock tires on a lifted car. might wanna update the older gen thread, so if people in the future searching for info the lift know that it was you're fault, not AA's
-
*yawn* Does it still work? I say wheel on!!! I've got some that look like that, the one that came off the rear of my '85 looked exactly like that, I guess I'd been driving it (in lots of mud, of course) like that for awhile. it was conveniant when the cup wouldn't come off the stub though....just pulled the DOJ apart.

4.11's, 4.44's, in a D/R 5spd. Any one?
Numbchux replied to soobme's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
come on man, we all have had experience with brett, in one way or another, this site wouldn't be what it is if it weren't for brett and the BYB. you do realize he's in australia don't you? -
come on man! accidents happen, they're shipping out a bunch of lifts in a short amount of time...and he actually dropped a couple of the wrong parts in one of them? woa! relax!
-
nope...this was just a good excuse to add bedliner instead of carpet, and rubber plugged drain holes under the seats! I'll get through that puddle yet!
-
I will when I get it, unfortunately the camera was out of battery when it happened, but my buddy was standing on the shore (I think an accurate term) with the DV camera. unfortunately I won't be getting ahold of if until the weekend, at which point, there will be pictures, and probably video!

AA lift installation/use thread
Numbchux replied to torxxx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no, the linkage stays. it's just the little plate that goes underneath them...I left mine off after I did the clutch. there's alot of other things that will get hit before the linkage, and alot of other things I'd be at least as worried about destroying. -
The link just doesn't come up for me. blank page....'done' at the bottom of the screen. tried with firefox and IE
-
yep, FWD struts are shorter than 4WD struts, and I think loyale struts are shorter than GL struts. plus the honda spring, I bet you've got a crazy rake going there! yep, neutral switch, older gl's had a clutch switch, newer ea82's had it on the tranny. it'll throw the code, but that's about it, as far as I can tell... oh yea, and how did you go about attaching the center driveshaft bearing?

AA lift installation/use thread
Numbchux replied to torxxx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well....first of all, does he still have the adjustable rear strut extensions on the bottom? or just the mount relocators on the top? I have the high clearance lift, so I ordered a 2" diff shim from sjr to easy my axle angles a bit, and then I'm cranking up my strut extensions!!! the lift still drops your engine xmember 3" (only raised one...) so you're bumper will be higher, but the rest is left low. here's a pic, keep in mind that everything is raised an additional 3" from the tires (6" total taller diameter), look how low the oil pan, xmember, etc. is: careful on the front strut top bolts, the ones welded into the extension, I broke 2 of mine off reinstalling them after putting adjustable struts on the front (bad idea....bye bye cv's). there's enough pressure on 'em from the car resting on the struts to keep things from moving, but nonetheless, I need to fix this soon. go for it in your driveway! I had 2 jackstands, 2 floor jacks, and a scissors jack (for finetuning, with a couple big chunks of wood so it could reach the car.) I used the scissors to push the xmembers up tight against the blocks while I tightened the bolts. also, with the xmembers detached from the rest of the car, things tend to shift, and not line up right anymore. I used a pair of ratcheting tie-down straps to pull things to where I needed them. I used this again when I pulled the tranny for a clutch job a month ago or so. worked great! -
I found that just the stock electric fan is plenty 99.9% of the time. only times I've had problems with the car is when I've forgotten to turn it on... I'd pull off the mechanical, I didn't notice any direct power increases, but I think it did get better freeway mileage (helps to have the electric fan off when above ~35mph).
-
oh yea, no problem!

the wheels are only 1" wider in diameter, that means .5" all around....at the wheel. the rest depends on the tire, I had some relatively lo-pro tires that came from baccaruda on the 15" pugs that we both ran on unlifted wagons, now I have bigger tires, that rub on my 4" lift...it's all in what size tire you get. tires for 14" wheels that will easily fit on your unlifted suby are definatley out there. one thing to be concerned about, I'm not sure if this goes for all pugs, or maybe mine are a bit wider...but the offset difference means that the tires can't tuck up into the fender well, they just hit the fender. so don't get ones that are too big, I hacked up 2 of the tires I was using when I tried to haul a big load home from school with 'em on there.

what do you need an electric fan over there for? just the stock electric fan is fine! as long as the rest of the system is functioning. I wonder why people are having so much trouble with the pitch stoppers...mine was fine. camber 'issue' well, these have goofy camber to start with, and it looks alot worse right after putting in the lift. put some miles on it, and see where that lands you. -
woa, holy crap, that's crazy. Well, the pics/video will be in next week for sure, but here's the deal. there are 3 main puddles, 1 called the 'truck mud run': and a couple smallers...I went through the smallest one at the crawl 4 the cure earlier this summer: so I went back through it last weekend, and it was quite a bit smaller and shallower, so I figured, having watched a jeep go through the truck mud run, and look close (I might have been able to do it...), I though, well, I just go across the end, not even through the middle....Well, it had gotten dug up, and turned out to be a healthy 2 feet, probably closer to 3 in the middle. all the pics I posted earlier in this post, as well as these two, were taken the next day (a healthy 24 hrs of sitting, plus quite a bit of scooping with my little shovel)...but you get the idea: and yes, that's the water line on the back seat, it didn't get quite that high in the front as the water didn't really start coming in until the front wheels started coming up the bank on the other side. it took 4 ATV's with winches to pull me out. I felt the need to tell everyone, because with all the talk about snorkels recently, is that I wanted to prove that you're intake is not your biggest problem. my car died instantly when water literally flooded my disty, the crank angle sensor completely caked with mud....stock intake: DRY, judging from the amount of white smoke that came out of the exhaust the first time I started it, some got in the exhaust, but the smoke has stopped, when I get the seats and carpet back in (if I do put the carpet in, might do some bedliner action...) we'll see how she runs.
-
oh man, look under the hood! just pullin your leg, but seriously, the big thing that all the plug wires are attached to, that's the disty. EJ series motors don't have a disty, but EA's definately do. wow, 3-4k rpm's?! no wonder you F--ed up your motor! I guess I should just spill the beans, it'll be a week or so before I get good pics/video of it, but I went through easily 2.5-3 FEET of water last weekend...got mud on the crank angle sensor, she came home on a tow strap! stock intake: DRY!!! I was crawling through it, speed is your enemy in water! you'd be suprised how soft the stuff can be and you can still be moving, hills are a different story, but relatively flat bottoms of water crossings, take it easy. and protect the electronics. If you like hitting the water at WOT 3-4k rpm's, yea, get a snorkel, and REALLY protect your electronics. I was in stuff so deep, I was worried about the ECU!
-
yea, it'll click or vibrate...but here's my rule: if it's broken, fix it, if it's not, wheel it 'til it is!!
-
well, this thread is like 5 months old, I wouldn't be suprised if it's not there anymore...

OK...wtf! I tried starting it up yesterday to watch the rad, and it wouldn't start, turned over, fired, but wouldn't run. Then today, on the way out the door, I tried it again, it started right up, of course, I was in too big of a hurry, and forgot to check for bubbles, but no more white smoke, a little blue smoke at first, but as soon as I reved it up, it was much better. maybe it just got a little water in it, and as soon as it burned it off, the smoke stopped...maybe it's fine?!? -
I have GoodYear UltraGrips, they do fine, hold up real nice against the sharp iron range rocks (I don't air down, the sidewalls don't look real strong, just to be sure). but the tread just get's caked with mud way to easily, if the stuff is too soft, they just become useless. on the + side...they're pretty quiet on the road.

just another bump, seen quite a few newer members, and since the 'you know you're a soob owner if...' post has been resurected, thought this one should be too. Enjoy (and thanks McBrat, I just love this article!!!) -
MNSubaru Duluth Trip
Numbchux replied to Numbchux's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
not sure about campgrounds, you can crash at my place if you want (as long as you don't mind the floor). I'm not sure what the MNSubaru guys have for a schedule, but I don't know of anywhere that they would have any fun. but if they're leaving early sunday morning, you and I could head up to the Iron Range ORV park, that place is a blast! it's like $40 for a 3 year sticker to get in, but inspections are pretty basic, mostly just a exhaust noise check. hopefully my wagon will be up and running by then. -
wow...235's! can you file the bolt down at all? Where is it rubbing?
-
Well, the MNSubaru club (mostly guys out of the twin cities) is driving up here to duluth for the weekend of October 15-16th. and some members from other areas will be coming too. not sure if non-members can view this... but: http://www.mnsubaruclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2846 we've got 9 cars on the for sure list for driving up from the cities, and 6 of us either here already, or coming from other places. anyone else want to come cruise with us? I'll be the only old-schooler, and if Austin comes, we'll have 2 lifted rigs....anyone else?

isn't it awesome? I couldn't beleive how much bigger mine got with the lift even on stock tires! mine looked uber sad, I was doing timing belts, water pump, oil pump reseal at the same time, it sat in the garage half-finished for a week+ looks awesome so far!!!!
