EA82 vs. EJ18 difference
PoorManzImpreza replied to Nebivedu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey All EJxxx engines are 16 valve either DOHC or SOHC EJ18 was usually SOHC SPFI or MPFI..we (Barbados) actually got Carbed EJ18s in '90 legacy's but I was told this I haven't actually seen this for myself..ej18s rev faster have more power rev higher. The hydraulic lash adjusters are smaller and less prone to clatter (but they still will) like all ej engines the block is a 5 main bearing design unlike ea which is 3. ej18 has an intake and exhaust port for each cylinder. ej18 is also mostly open deck in design..it isn't a bad little block God knows Subaru should'a used it in the Loyale and easily could have, but water under the bridge.. -
hmm loyale body style was in production from '84-'94 same body same parts same engines...minor variations it was only called 'loyale' in the 90s..that's ten years with no major body style changes.. 15 years of legacy with what 4 body changes? lol...but damn Legacy is really a legacy..and the loyale is every modern subaru's legacy..just slide an ejxxx engine in that loyale body and see if you don't think..damn why didn't subaru do that from 90-94...

15" pug test fit
PoorManzImpreza replied to The Scooby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Pug (505) lugnuts and sub lug nuts are pitch and diameter identical the alloy rims require two piece pug lugnuts and are lugcentric even on pug hubs hence the odd design of the lugnuts.. I recommend torquing the pug lugs up 2 90lb.ft of torque as this feels optimal for them.. also if you lower your car your tires WILL rub in dips and around corners at high speeds if you leave your suspension stock.. Also the pug alloys have a diff offset than the sub wheels and I HIGHLY recommend getting your tires realigned with the pugs on although your car will be perfectly safe if it was aligned with the sub wheels...it just made huge diff in how the car handled..sharper turn in etc.. Other than that, ENJOY! Hope you love yours as much as I love mine :-) -
LOL Will that is just too stiff, if you were down here you'd have kidney problems with our @$$ bad roads I thought my ride was hard with '85 4wd springs kyb gas dampers and a .75" spacer in the back struts (and yes those are struts in the back irregardless of what you have heard) to compensate for the weight of my tools and stereo... Can't have my PUGs rubbing... where did you get those springs from?

Didn't mean to Insult your intelligence, Corky Just that I've seen a couple wrx guys that hadn't bleed the clutch properly another guy had a bad slave cylinder..one rebuild kit and a bleed later and it worked..the Pull type clutch looks very different from a normal clutch, as I'm sure you know ;-) having said that if you have the wrong clutch in you should notice that your clutch pedal height isn't correct as the fork won't return toward the engine as it would with a pulltype as the fingers of a pushtype would get in the way..I know that info might not be relevent in URXs case because your normal pedal height is really an unknown.. bleh..well I'll be helping my muffler guy put an ej18x into his '85 L series wagon using fwd 5 speed cable driven legacy tranny anything I should look out for? Cheers

Is the clutch fork moving when you push the clutch, Corky?
-
Corky. Did you use an EJ transmission with a hydraulic clutch or cable driven?

no prob man glad I could hook ya up -
I know we are old school guys, but I thought those doing EJxxx conversions might just find these useful...Assuming these weren't linked a year ago and I'm the clueless one which happens often ;-) http://ken-gilbert.com/wrx/impreza_manuals.htm Have fun!

can a 6ft4in guy fit in a sube?
PoorManzImpreza replied to rallyruss's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
6'5" here and fit.. but damn if my knee doesn't wanna pump into the steering wheel when I push/release the clutch -
so..If impreza and legacy knuckles are the same and they bolt to xt6 caliper, that means that impreza/legacy brakes can be used and, following on that, sti brembo four piston brake calipers and sti discs are possible on our cars..only thing is rear e-brake...now I'm thinking that with minor mods and rerouting our e-brake cables 2 the back toyota rear calipers will work as the e-brake mechanism is similar to our front e-brake. If anyone can tell me the bolt spacing for the rear caliper torque plate I can tell you if this could be a direct mount, or if any adapting needs to be done..since I lack rear discs myself but have plenty of access to toyota setups..

Racer RX, future plans. No so secret mobile!
PoorManzImpreza replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So my questions are, 'Dr. EJ' LOL when did Subaru move the EJ engines to cam on bucket style valve system vs the hydraulic lash adjusted rocker system? also do all the turbo engines have piston oil squirters, closed and open deck? I notice that the ej22 I got a look into had sleeves in the cylinder bores do all EJ engines have sleeves? thanks WJM, still interested in tossing that 4wd stuff a long long way to me?
