Why not just use a 1600 VW motor. Much more abundant and tons of parts available. Sell the ea62 to someone who owns a vintage subaru.

Just got a 78 Brat. Alabama

So is that stripe kit a factory option, or some PO creativity. Looks to be period correct in any event. Very cool. Get it running and keep the stripes. -
The brat is running great with the different dizzy cap. Still can't understand why the old one failed. No visable cracks at all. ???.

I have ea81 Brat. I just swapped out the dizzy cap because the old one was letting moisture get in. Any tricks for keeping water out. I'm thinking of just smearing dialectic grease around the base of the cap, and around the wire boots. Any other ideas? Also what is the difference between dialectic grease, and vasoline? Can I just use vasoline?

$200 for an EA82....Worth it?
Rust replied to josiahm91's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I usually buy whole cars. You would be amazed at the stuff you end up picking off to keep your ride going. It's also nice to use a parts car as reference to see how stuff goes together. -
Well I found another spare hour to tinker on the car. Replaced the Alternator and the ECU. Still no start. Going to try swapping the dizzy next. I also have some new spark plugs stashed somewhere Here is my list of parts that I have replaced so far. Coil Fuel Pump Alternator ECU

found this 6" lifted loyale on the old craigslist recently.

Your rear differential front hanger bushings, and or the rear drive shaft support are probably on the way out.

I'd be interested to see your results after a few months, I've had my share of faulty aftermarket gaskets that are complete garbage straight out of the box. Has anyone tried the sheets of generic gasket material, Mr Gasket, Felpro , ect?
-
I guess my next plan of action will be to replace the alternator and the ECU. I have another ECU from a 1988 ea82 3spd auto. that i know is good.

Jackmans will have a flat spokes and you should find a J stamped on one or the spokes. If you happen to have a set of these as well. email me!

The proportioning/ balancing valve on the rear end can be by-passed. I had one rust off, and now I just run a generic T fitting. Been running it for a long time like that without issues.

Well had a little time to tinker on it this weekend. The symptoms have gotten much worse as the car is now sitting. Currently The car will crank, but no start at all. popped the dizzy cap, found the screw holding the rotor laying on the cover plate (????) Re-connected screw, cleaned up all contacts. Made no difference, car still no start. I have noticed the fuel pump is only buzzing when the ignition key is turned past the on position (when the starter is engaged) not buzzing when ignition in ON position. On a side note: Before any of these problems started the alternator was over charging (high volts) , this was going on for months before the current problems. The day before the symptoms started, I got stuck in a snow drift and had to really rev the crap out of the motor to get unstuck. Hopefully I will get some more free time to solve this mystery.

IVE HAD ENOUGH! Help Me Figure out my Vapor Locking!
Rust replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Did you try spraying wd40 or carb cleaner around the intake manifold to find a vacuum leak? -
Update: new fuel pump = did not fix problem. coil swap = did not fix problem. Symptoms have gotten worse. Now it will only stay running for a few minutes , then stumbles and dies. will not re-start (until sits for a few hours) Thinking of swapping the AIC valve next, or put a new fuel filter on it.

well done sir, "I have the power!"

86 Gl-10 not starting randomly
Rust replied to Wolverine18's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just keep a subaru mechanic locked in the trunk of your car, it will never act up again. Well that might get you arrested , plus the cost of feeding him, ect... Instead you could try putting in a new fuel filter and run 93 octaine for a while to see if that improves things. -
fixing one problem found another...rusty gas tank?
Rust replied to joe5's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would just keep flushing the tank until the gas comming out is clean. Then keep all the gas I used to clean the tank to run my lawnmower for the summer. I view being cheap as an art form -
situation has gotten much worse. Car died 2 times on the commute home last night, Very violent stumbling , then engine dies. Still starts up after sitting for 30-45 min. While waiting to re-start during the cool-down, I turned the ignition on and felt the fuel pump, no buzzing or movement. I ordered a new fuel pump, and have taken the car off the road until the part arrives. Usually a fuel pump works or does not. Not used to one intermittantly not working, that's why I am suspecting other issues. I guess I will find out for sure when the new pump arrives this weekend.
