The Subaru Search and Rescue Thread
Rust replied to Rust's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here are some more pics -
So I decided to start a Thread for people to post Subaru's found and rescued. I'll start this thread off with a 1988 Dual Range 5speed 4WD EA82 SPFI recently rescued from the north woods of Maine. It has been off the road for about 5yrs. When I got it home I drained the gas tank, replaced the broken/rusty fuel lines, tossed in some fresh gas and a new battery......and VROOOOM, started up first turn. Car will need some exhaust work and a new clutch, but for a car that has sat for 5 yrs it's worth the rescue. It also has the original floor mats, radio, and subaru factory optional cruise control. Here are some pics as found, enjoy. and post up pics of your own Subaru Search and Rescue missions!

EA82 Aftermarket Waterpump Opinions
Rust replied to Rust's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The leak is comming right under the waterpump. Haven't torn it appart yet to see exactly where the leak is. I used permatex on the gaskets when I installed it. Yes the pump works great, no overheating issues.....it just leaks. I'm wondering if I should have re-tourqed everything after the first 100 miles. -
I replaced my waterpump with an aftermarket (non genuine subaru) waterpump and gasket. Now less than 7000 miles later its leaking again? I threw the box away so I don't know what the manufactuer was, I bought it from Advanced AutoParts. So before I replace it again does anyone recommend certain brands? I doubt I could even get a replacement pump from subaru. I'm trying to decide to go with a cardone or bosh replacement from rock auto. Any feedback on other peoples choices/recommendations appreciated.

Retired: Subaru Loyale ...maybe
Rust replied to Loyale93v's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Whenever I do EA82 timming belts/cam seals, I totally remove everything from the front of the car. (grill, radiator, ect) Makes it alot easier to see everything when lining everything up. If you decide to part out your car drop me an email. I can always use extra ea82 parts. I live in southern new england. -

I painted my bus with Rustoleum using rollers. Did not thin out the paint, just poured into a tray and rolled. I did prep w/ a lot of sanding and cleaning the surface w/ thinner before painting. I also wet sanded in-between coats. I used rattle cans on the wheels, bumpers, and areas I could not get a roller on. As far as the condensation issue painting in the cold, as long as there is no moisture on the painting surface you should be ok as far as the paint sticking. The only problem will be a longer dry time between coats. On my bus I went 48 hrs between coats. (in the summer) I ended up doing about 4 coats total. In any event rustoleum is a very forgiving paint and rattle cans and liquid quarts matched excellent. PS no clearcoat, I just hose it of to keep it clean.

Dumb Question? Loyale vs. GL (Wagons)?
Rust replied to DT250a's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
GL = Grand Luxury vollt meter oil pressure guage carpeted door cards grab handles on front interior doors 2nd interoir lights above the rear view mirror power door locks. 3rd interior light in back of the car steering wheel w/ subaru logo. Loyale = Low Luxury None of the above. -
Had this movie on the t.v. the other night(just background noise). Too painfully boring to actually watch, but I came out of the kitchen when at the halfway point of this terrible movie there is a 5 minute sceen at a subaru dealership. Tons of brand new 1977 models on display. Really horrible movie, but if you can get to that 5 minute screne it will be worth it. http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_253275-Subaru-DL-1977.html

Picked this one up for my son. Its a 1986 GL 3spd auto fwd a clean example of an early ea82 interior, original floor mats and radio still in the car. This sedan really was owned by a little old lady who just used it to go to the grocery store. I have put about 8,000 miles on it and had about 50,000 when I bought it. Car sat for a couple years before I picked it up, fresh oil and a new battery was all that was required to get it back in service. EA82's may be the readheaded step-child of the subaru family of engines, but they still take a beating and keep on ticking (pun intended)

They were a direct bolt on in the front. The rear requires a little backspacing (2 washers) and a little grinding on the trailing arm and the innner lip of the rim. This is a 2wd gen 1, but if theres a will there is a way to get them to fit a 4wd gen 1

Prep for road-trip; CV Axle's 93 FWD ea82
Rust replied to l75eya's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bring a tub of grease with you. If the cv joints start to make some noise slap some grease on them to shut them up. Get rid of the crimp clamps on the boots and use hose clamps instead so you can service the boots on the road. -
Found the leak. One of the hoses to the heater core at the firewall. The hose had heat insulation on it so the leak wasn't easy to spot. thanxs for the feedback.

The motor has 60,000 miles on it. the radiator and thermostat were replaced by the PO before I got it. Being it is a 1986 car it probably sat a lot without regular use. Now that I'm running it on a regular basis it makes sense that the gaskets would start failing from sitting for so long. Hopefuly I will have time this weekend to check the plugs and intake gaskets. thanxs for the tips.

No leak from the heater core.

I have 3 ea82 cars that get regular use one has 60,000miles, one has 180,000 miles , and one has over 300,000 miles. They all burn oil at the same rate 1-2 quarts between oil changes. These motors get thirsty
-
No water in the tranny fluid. The engine oil and tranny fluid are due to be changed soon, so I can better inspect for water traces. I have a whole bunch of radiator caps, guess I'll try a few different ones until I get to changing the fluids and a more intense inspection for leaks.

My 1986 GL EA82 spfi 3spd auto. Is going through about 2 qts of coolant every 100miles. No leaks in any of the hoses, radiator, water pump or heater core. No big plumes of white smoke from the exhaust. No signs of water in the oil. Getting tired of filling up the radiator every other day. Any Ideas?
