Did you strip the licence plate light cover off of the 76 DL? I have been trying to find one. They get mistaken for the trunk handle and get broken off.

I like the pics of that orange 76 dl sedan. It says RIP under the pic, too bad.

Sweeeet!!!!

aluminum engines are very unforgiving if you over torque or put the bolt in cock-eyed. Sounds like you stripped the threads. Get a sharp drill bit, re-tap the threads and/or heli-coil it.

It seems to have been idleing much better since I lubed up the linkages and the cable. There must have been something (grime/grit) caught in there, because I ran it over 150 miles in the last 2 days since p-b blasting it and it seems fine. If the electronic choke(heating element) on the side of the carb was out of whack and choking the carb after warm up......thus causing a high idle, could it be by-passed. For example putting a toggle switch in the lead wire to the choke, click it on for warm-up, then clicking it off after warm up. Basically turning it into a manual choke.

Problem: Fast/racing idle Checked all hoses and p-b blasted all pivot points on the accelerator. Before I start messing with the idle adjuster, I was wondering if it was either the Elecrtonic Choke or the ERG Valve. It there a by-pass proceedure to check these 2 things to rule them out??? Usually if the ERG goes belly-up you get a low irregular idle, so I'm thinking it's the electronic choke, any ideas?

If your doing work with paper or felt gaskets I use copper spray. Stuff keeps the gasket in place and isn't a mess. If your using straight permatex (making your own gasket) clean the surfaces real good, then wipe it down w/ paint thinner or de-natured alcohol to get every bit of grease and grime off. a gasket is only as good as the surface it is bonding to.

Your wife probably poured in diesel fuel instead of gas, given her first 2 mistakes. Get her a ford escort to play with, keep her away from your subie.

I cant find a correct filter at pepboys. I found a fram G3802A at walmart that is listed for a Mazda FI motor. The canister is the same dimension as the one in the car. Anyone used a non-factory filter before, the only differance I can see is the factory filter has an elbow inlet tube....the mazda one is straight. I'm trying to fix a crappy idle issue and want to rule out the small stuff first. Also picked up sme BOSCH 4019 platnum plus plugs. Any suggestions appreciated:)

My 77 DL sedan has a 3spd automatic, runs fine. Top speed is 60-65 mph on the highway, but no slips or leaks. I did put bigger 175 tires, the 155's were not that grippy in cornering.

My temp guage in the 77 sedan has 2 marks, one smack dab in the middle at12:00 and one at 3/4. I assume these 2 only marks represent the mid range. On start up it steadily climbs up to the first mark. once I take it down the road it will climb halfway past the first mark, then drop back down to the first mark again. I imagine when it drops back this is when the thermostat opens up. I did a 100 mile trip the other day and it pretty much stayed at 12:00 (the first mark). I suppose I should forget about all this guess-work and install a temp guage that will give me a more accurate read. I did pick up a brand new water pump, but perhaps this is the way its meant to run. It just looks strange to see the temp needle in the middle like that.

Hitachi question and answer time......

if you don't have a wiring diagram(which i don't either) whenever I'm trying to solve mystery wires before I start pluging them in to where i think they should go(grounding, connecting, ect) I run an inline fuse in the mystery wire before i connect it to anything. -
replaced thermostat, hoses, flushed system, rewired fan(toggle switch), added a second fan(toggle switch). There is no leaks in the radiator and the cap is fine. temp guage goes to halfway mark and higher when the car gets up to 55mph. this is with both fans running? I haven't taken it out on the highway for fear it will completely overheat. before I swap out the radiator is it normal for the temp guage to run between halfway mark and the3/4 mark. I'm used to ea82's that run all day at the 1/4 mark. any feedback appreciated. Just took it out for a ride tonight, its 20 degrees outside and it still runs hot:-\ ps running the heater makes no differance on the temp guage, the heater core is fine.

Does anyone know about the alternator swap?
Rust replied to RenaissanceMan's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I'm trying this swap on my ea71. i took off the external regulator but i have 2 black with white stripe wires. one is clearly a white stripe, the other is a slightly greenish white stripe. which one do i connect to the blue wire, and which one should get grounded. in addition there is a separate black wire comming off of the regulator with a female end on it that is not connected to anything. if you look at the wire pattern on the back of the circular connector (clockwise) it goes blue, black/white stripe, yellow, white/black stripe, white/red stripe, white, and in the center is the black with the slightly greenish wire. the solid black wire commonig off of the old regulator with the female end is not part of the circular connector, but it comes out of the same cluster of wires on the side of the regulator. I wish i had a digital camera to post a picture. any links to wiring diagrams, or help? -
there are multiple thermostats that will fit, what is the correct one? autowarehouse lists several from 160 to 195 degree's. I have a stant 13859 rated at 195 degrees new in a box. can I use this? what is the correct temp degree to use? Any suggestions appreciated.

go for it dude! they sell wheel adapters on this web-site to bolt up vw 5 lugs on your subaru. look in the off road section.
-
a split widow pop top could work, but a single hinged westy pop top from a 1970's era bus would be too wide. Subaru should have produced a westfalia version of the the old 360 micro van, one of those with a pop top and safari windows would be the bomb.

thanxs for the info. I'll give it a try on my daily driver. Now, can it keep the oil and grease from building up on the tailgate?

just picked up a 91 loyale 2wd wagon parts car. It has a 2" wide spoiler attached to the top of the back hatch door. Any-one know why these were installed on some models, and do they serve a purpose. The car also has slats and cargo racks on the roof, so I assume it was some sort of trim package that came from the factory.....the hubcaps are also held on by the lug bolts. So whats the spoiler for? Did loyale's actually go that fast to need one when new?

ea82's rock! my 86gl daily driver i bought for $200 3 years ago is still chugging along. I commute 100 miles roundtrip every day in it. the only engine work i have done was replacing the cam seals and the timing belt. just change the oil regularly and keep an eye on other vital fluids. 250,000 and still running strong!
