Goodbye to a Guru - CTSUBA **** R.I.P.
Rust replied to moosens's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Sorry to hear, he was a good guy. I'll never forget the first time I responded to his one of his craigslist ads for a subaru (long before I knew about USMB) I get out there and find subaru heaven, fields of subarus as far as they eye could see. He was definitely living the dream....RIP. -
http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/how-to/a5754/how-to-free-a-rusted-bolt/ (but it was weird because all of them turned freely for 5 or 6 turns and then just snapped off suddenly.) Yes this happens when the rusty threads connect w/ the bolt or fitting. Soak everything for a good 24-48 hours before removing, and work the bolts in and out slowly. If you can reach the exposed rusty threads with a cutting wheel, just cut them off before attempting bolt removal. Good luck with your project,

Update: Recently acquired a new to me "Search and Rescue" recovery rig. Introducing the Quadravan. This monster will pull a house down, and easily drag home any subarus I find. Happy subaru hunting....... Post up any new "Search and Rescue" stories. -
Replaced a 1993 loyale engine with a 1990
Rust replied to jbartle6's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check your vacuum lines for your pushbutton 4wd. Then check all the linkages for rust, being bent, ect. I had similar problems, ended up drilling a hole in the trans tunnel and installing my own manual shift lever. -
Update: I have been running 20w50 for the last 500 miles or so. It's now burning about 3/4 of a quart every 100 miles.(slight improvement) slight smoke at start up but quickly goes away. No other smoke from the tailpipe. HOWEVER When I am banking hard and fast (highway exits and entrances) It blows smoke like locomotive, massive clouds like the engine just blew up. Once I get the car straight it stops. I guess I'm just going to keep running it and see what happens. Other than the oil consumption issues this is one of the best EA82 motors I have run, Runs 75-85mph on the highway all day long, with great acceleration and doesn't skip a beat.

Mystery Solved Finally. When I swapped out the plugs I was only able to change 3, I left the (old) #1 cylinder plug in because it was not coming out easy and I did not want to strip the threads. This past weekend I finally managed to get it out, after letting it soak in PB Blast for the last few weeks and put in the 4th NGK Plug. Car started right up, idles great, and re-starts without issues at all. Bottom line never trust a Subaru motor that is not running NGK Plugs. Never let these clowns into your engine

Rarest Old-School Subaru Part or Option?

GL Mudflaps. Wonder if they made DL ? -
I bought it about a year and a half ago as a parts car because is has a dual range 5 speed. The PO barely maintained it. There is no Cat or muffler, just a straight pipe w/ a cherry bomb on the end. I replaced the belts, oil, and power steering pump. I'm running 10w30. I have put around 300 miles on it since getting it back on the road. Too bad about the oil issues because the engine runs excellent, so skips or pops. Used it briefly to commute and it maintains 70-80mph on the highway all day long. "l'll try to take a look at the PCV. Is there a generic product to use other than Subaru upper engine cleaner. What about running some risoline or ATF in the crankcase to un-stick the rings. Still can't wrap my head around how an engine running this good, not leaving any puddles or smoke(not even any start up smoke) could using up so much oil.
-
So I have a 1988 Coupe EA82 Fuel injected that I recently put on the road. Was sitting for the last year, and has about 122,000 miles. Does not smoke, or leak oil at all.......But it uses 1 qrt of oil every 100 miles????WTF The engine runs great asides from the disappearing oil?

In dash voltmeter 84 GL inop
Rust replied to ErikAnderson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My volt meter is way off in my brat. I suppose it could be fixed. Probably a lot easier to just run a generic meter into the car, rather than spend a whole day tearing apart the dash. -
It is on the back burner, been running my brat and coupe. I have thrown a new set of plugs at it the other weekend. Still wont start. Hopefuly I can get a spare hour or so to tinker with it. I found a spare dizzy that I will try next.

Home made grill guards , cost = $0. The $40 ones definitely look better, but if you are a cheapskate like me this is what you end up with.
