  1. On my 97 Legacy 2.5 GT, the trip meter is at 160 at 1/2 full mark. At last fillup, i got 23.8 Mpg, I usually get between 23-24 mpg, 90% highway driving. My wife's 2.5 Altima got 23.6 at last fillup, also mostly highway so I guess Subaru are not the works gas guzzlers out there..
  2. I had a similar problem with my 97 Legacy. It wouldn't start and just turn over when warm. The CEL came on finally with a Crankshaft Position Sensor fault. I guess I'd need to clean the contacts. Anyone know where the sensor is? Thanks
  3. It's pretty easy. Remove two bolts for the rear seat, it's by your feet, on the bottom. Pull out the rear seat. Slide up the back rest and unhinge from the two loops on each side. Pull out the speaker cover (could be painful) and you're done.
  4. I paid around 170 for mine. A new shaft ($110) and labor, a little over 1/2 hour.
  5. Hey everyone. I got a similar situation. The car was turning over but wouldn't start. I got P0335 as a code and eventually started the car. Where exactly is the Throttle Position Sensor in a 97 Legacy? If anyone got a picture, that would be awesome. I guess I'll try to clean the contacts and see what happens. Thanks
  6. Hey.. 1. Used MMO for 97 Legacy noisy lifters. In my opinion, did absolutely nothing. I think all MMO is is simply lighter weight oil. 2. Never used seafoam but thinking about it.
  7. I've go the same thing happening to my 97 Legacy 2.5. The coil pack is probably shot and some secondary ignition occurs when the engine is humid/wet. The CEL you got will most likely by Cylinder 1-4 misfire. When the car warms up, the hesitation goes away and everything is fine. I am yet to replace mine since the hesitation only happens on wet/rainy days and goes away fairly quickly.
  8. I had a similar problem with my cigarette lighter. The light would go on when i plugged my cellphone in but the fan would tun on as well. Turns out one of the fuses was blown and the circuit was worwarded to the fan for some reason. I'd check the fuses again, just be sure.
  9. I believe it's easier if you remove the headlight housing. There are 3 screws, two on top and one behind the grill, kinda pain to get to. Remove the plastic clips holding the grill in and you'll be able to get to the last screw. Just pull the headlight forward and twist the flasher bulb out by its plastic housing. not too difficult Good luck
  10. Hey everyone, back again. This morning it was raining and the engine ran like crap again when cold and wet. I replaced the sparkplugs and wires but the CEL for Cyl 1 came on again when the engine started stumbling. Once again, once it warmed up a little, the problem went away. How complicated is it to remove the coil pack? What would be causing this problem - a bad gasket and some secondary ignition goin on? Thanks.
  11. Hey, thanks for the reply. Didn't do the compression test but I do run a bottle of injector cleaner every oil change - 1.5 months. I first got the misfire code a few months ago but replaced the plugs right after with NGK Coppers, pregapped to .044 but I still checked and they were. I guess the next step would be to do a compression test and see. Thanks.
  12. Hi everyone. Been having this issue for the past few months. On some humid morning, when I start the car, the tac sits at idle for a few sec and then the engine starts coughing every few secs. If I put it in neutral, it's a little better but still stumbles every few secs. When I hit the gas, I feel like I only have 1/2 the power from stop but when the RPMs go above 2500 or so, all 4 cyls kick in. I got the CEL a few times, Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected. Once the car warms up, the car runs smooth, as usual. I changed the sparkplugs. The wire seem to be in good shape, still soft and looking good. Any ideas what else the problem might be?
  13. I have a '97 Legacy GT, Auto. At 145,000, no issues with it aside from Piston Slap and some leaky seals. Coolant is clean and the car never overheated. I guess each car is different and you just never know when things may go. Does any one have % figures on the HG failures compared to total cars owned? I feel that HG problem is blown out of proportion since only the people who do have problems with it post on the board. All others who never had a problem we never hear of. Just my opinion.
  14. Yea, it actually did. I usually only use it in the winter but i decided to kick it in now and felt cold air coming out and was just curious. Ignorance is bliss i guess..
  15. Hey everyone. 97 Legacy GT, 140,000 miles. Some quick strangeness here. When I select the Windshield Defogger on the dash, the AC turns on. Regardless of where the temp setting is, hot or cold. I noticed this a few days ago. The AC button is off so the clutch should not be engaging so I'm a bit puzzled. I checked all the fuses and they're all intact so I'm not sure where else i could look. Would I need to replace the HVAC control unit? I took it out, didn't see any obvious shorts or frayed wiring. Any help is great.. Thanks
  16. Yup, you can deifnitely remove the scoop. Take off the heat shield to reveal a metal place. Unscrew 6 or so small metal screws and the scoop comes right out. 10-15 minutes with rusted in screws..
  17. I have the same thing once in a while after not starting the car for more than 3-4 days. It starts rattling like it's falling apart but 10-15 seconds later it quiets down. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's not Subaru specifc. Our pontiac does the same thing if it sits in one spot for too long.
  18. 97 Legacy GT, Phase I, Around 135,000 miles...not head gasket problems, just lifter/piston slap, crank seal leak..
  19. I bought mine from oxygensensors.com for around $60. So far no problems for the last 15K miles. Not sure if I'm right but stock O2 sensor looks like a Bosch sensor that i saw at Strauss or PepBoys. Not sure how much it was though. It took me some time to get the sensor out since the bolts and nuts were all rusted and welded to the exhaust pipe.
  20. hey..not sure if my legacy is similar but i had to pull off the rear seat cushion (unscrew the two bolts by the foot well on the rear footwell wall, behind the seats. Next, unscrew the 3 bolts under the back rest, where the seat belt comes out, where the seat cushion and back rest meet. Pull the backrest up and unhook it. Pull out the cover to reveal the speakers. Unscrew the screws (3) and unhook the jack in the trunk, under the speakers. Hope yours is similar.
  21. When you turn off the fan, make sure that the RECIRC light is on as well, this will prevent the air from entering the vents when you're driving. Make sure the the selector is on one of the first 3 choices, UPPER, BI-LEVEL or LOWER. Hope this helps.
  22. I had a front end collision with a Lincoln Continental, goin about 15 MPH. The front end, hood, bumper, lights, radiator, condenser got smashed...$3500 in damages but the air bags did not go off. The hood curled up but no air bags. Thank heavens, $1300 less to spend. Sorry to hear bout yours.
  23. The FM modulated CD changer plugs into the FM antenna plug, no need to splice audio wires. I did have to splice into the power wires to power it up. I mounted the changer on the passenger read folding seat, inside the trunk. Then I ran the wire under the seat, under the carpet and the shifter console, into the radio console. The FM modulator is sitting in the glove compartment. The storage bin in the middle is pretty easy to remove. Hope this helps.
  24. I hope it's similar to a 97 model. First you have to open the center armrest, and take out 2 screws holding the shifter cover. Pull out the two covers, one near the driver's right elbow and one covering the shifter (it's easier if you manual put the shifter into 1st with the key in ON position). Open the cup holder and take out 2 screws on each side. You can pop the center vents and hazard switch out, just pull on the whole panel - lightly. Then take out the ashtray and there are 2 small screws underneath. Carefully take them out and don't lose the metal brackets that they attach to. Take out the plastic center frame and you'll see your radio with 4 screws at the corners. Take those out and you can pull the radio out. I'm writing this from memory, so i hope i didn't miss too much. Im sure someone can provide pictures as well. Hope this helps.
