  1. Does it go back down after it cools down? Because if it does, this is completely normal. If it keeps filling and spits the coolant onto the ground, you have a problem. Twitch
  2. Type of Wrenching:Shadetree, Maintenance What: Mostly Subarus, a little mazda, a little GM How Long: 4 Years Other Skills Bicycle Mechanic, been good at ripping stuff apart and putting it back together for years. Technically minded and able to study something without having to take it apart, when I do, I can get an even better understanding. Twitch
  3. Well, you should check it anyway, just to make sure they were filled to the proper level. And I know, its hot and scary down there, but you can do it, I'm sure Twitch
  4. So there's extra coolant in the overflow tank when its hot? Sounds like your coolant system is too full. No big deal unless it just started doing this. If it did this recently, it may be the headgasket. Twitch
  5. Hey sweet wheels man, are they Jackmans? And your list of Suby's is about the same as mine Guess we don't need to warn you about the "bug". Twitch PS: Oh, and WELCOME
  6. Me likey... But you should make each of the background stars an option, esp since you have 6 options... Twitch
  7. Yes, very much so. If its an auto, check your tranny fluid, it probably needs a change. If its not pinkish in color, and is a dark color, it definitely needs a change. If it smells burnt, there is a problem, and I would have it checked out ASAP. Best way to check the tranny is drive it until the car temp is at the normal range for a few minutes, pull over, put it in park, keep the engine running while you check it, look at the "Hot" side of the dipstick for the level. If low, add more (derrrr ), if too full, check your owners manual or maintenance manual on the best way to empty small amounts of fluid. If its a manual, I've heard sometimes the main input bearing will fail? But not very often. So check you fluid on that, it doesn't matter if its hot or cold, running or not when you check a manual, as you probably well know... Twitch
  8. Sweet, sounds like you've got the problem fairly well whipped Congrats on your purchase, hope it continues to serve you well. Twitch
  9. Its a 1.6 liter engine trying to push you up a hill. It has less than 70 hp, and most of that is around the 4500 rpm mark. I'm sure its just the power to weight ratio, as well as some gunk getting cleaned out of the system. Maybe try some different gas or try wrapping it out to 5 or 6k while driving, just to break up any junk that's crusted up inside. Twitch
  10. I'm still working in this as well. I find it easiest to just click on "social groups" after I'm done reading the new post in my "user cp". Twitch
  11. Once that cabinet liner adheres, water's not going to pose much of a threat... The duct tape on the other hand would look like crap after a couple weeks. Twitch
  12. OK, thanks for letting me know, but I can't use any of it anyways, because the morons who sold me the parts, sent me the wrong parts. So I get to wait until they reply and have to send the parts back >_< But in a pinch this is good to know. Twitch
  13. Be wary of this seller. I just bought some pads and rotors from them and they sent me the wrong parts, I just told them and will keep everyone updated onto how they're treating me. Twitch
  14. In your case I'd go for the ATF first, as it seems your problem is just from lots of wear and may need some minor cleaning. 250k is up there for just about any EJ. Plus the additives in the ATF would probably be good for your seals where as seafoam tends to be hard on those. Good luck and hope your tick goes away! Twitch
  15. Awww, but that takes all the fun out of it... As for cleaning your oil passages, I highly recommend using a quart of ATF in place of a quart of oil on your next oil change or running seafoam in the oil for 5-10 minutes before you do your next oil change. There are many write-ups on how to use seafoam, just do a quick search using the keyword "seafoam" and you'll get plenty. Twitch PS: Make sure you clean your valve covers immaculately otherwise you could end up with a leak.
  16. Hot diggity dog, this is looking promising... I can't wait until I can run an AE86 with an EJ engine Twitch
  17. I know, thread from the dead, but THANK YOU FOX!!! I just got screwed by a Ebay seller, I got sent solid rotors and solid pads for an 85 BRAT >_< And as my brakes sit there is no way in hello that I'm letting it continue as is. Lets just say this is good enough to put on the wall of shame/fame. I will post up pix in a separate thread... Twitch
  18. Sounds like you're working up to a really good car And I think you have a a couple good Subaru builders down there to fab stuff up for you One thing that you may want to look into that I don't think has been mentioned, is if you go with the stock struts on the front end, you could see about getting some king springs or scorpion springs for them. Those should give you about an inch to inch and a half to work with. Twitch
  19. I don't think you mentioned it, but have you checked your coolant? It sounds like you're running low on coolant. Also, did you wire up your fan to be a puller rather than a pusher? If you got your polarity wrong on the fan it could be trying to push air instead of pulling it through the radiator. Twitch
  20. Heh, it was on by "420" huh? JK The wire may just be in a bad spot from when it was replaced before. Easiest thing to do is check the routing of the wiring while they're replacing it. And make sure they use OEM or Bosch, I wouldn't trust anything else personally. Twitch
  21. Grinder Torch Sawzall zzz But if you want to reuse the axles, you could probably just disassemble the outer cv joint and cover the open stub with something. And to reassemble, just repack the joint with bearing grease and put everything back together. Twitch
  22. Yeah, if you wreck you don't want a blazing hot 100+ pound hunk of metal flying into the cabin with you. It also increases the stiffness of the front end, allowing you to deal more punishment to it. If you incorporate it into your suspension mounts then you'll have a very strong, very durable offroad car. Twitch
  23. You're fine. In my area you made out like a bandit. Those cars usually go for at least 10k. An O2 sensor is no big deal, unless you have to pass smog :-\ If not, just clear the code and see how long it takes to come back. If it comes back immediately then you definitely have a problem that needs fixing. Fairtax has a point that it could be as simple as a pinched wire. And a quick feel around the exhaust where the O2 sensor is located could easily reveal a corroded/broken clip or a pinched wire. Just check around and see what it takes to diagnose a bad O2 sensor on these. Twitch
  24. Ok, wasn't sure how you were approaching this. You'll definitely have to beef up the strut mounts as well as everything suspension related. You'll need a caged engine as well as cabin, blah blah blah, I'm sure you're gonna do just fine. And a Forester would be the best choice as it is based on the Impreza and has a multitude of parts available. Plus the greater clearance, tauter suspension, and lighter weight than the Outback just add icing to the cake. Twitch
  25. Ok, if you're comparing a Subaru to a Jimco Buggy, that's like comparing grapefruit to grapes. To get any Subaru up to that point you're gonna have to do some MAJOR upgrading to the suspension. Dakar requires some awesome suspension travel, and you're not going to get that out of stock Forester struts, even though they are some of the longest travel struts made by Subaru. Ok, Rally cars made to do well over 160 KM/H over jumps and bumps and the like, only do 120-160 KM/H. Foresters were not built to do those kind of speeds. If you push one to that extent without upgrading anything you WILL have a catastrophic failure. Twitch
