Alt not charging
Twitch de la Brat replied to Markus56's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok. Have you tried tracing the charging wire or getting a wiring diagram and seeing where exactly it runs to? If you can somehow look at the entire running of the main charging wire, you may find some broken wires, or maybe a short. Another thing, have you checked the voltage straight off the alt, grounding to the body? Twitch -
Alt not charging
Twitch de la Brat replied to Markus56's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
True, but the alt needs the signal wires to know when to charge. I found this out on my BRAT. I'm sure its the same on an EA82 as they share alternators. I believe the volt meter just reads off a circuit. Twitch -
Alt not charging
Twitch de la Brat replied to Markus56's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have you checked to make sure both of the signal wires are connected and have continuity? I've had that issue when the wires come loose (GM alt swap), or I forget to plug them in As for the dash lights not lighting up, I would check the back of the instrument cluster for any loose/corroded wires. Also, have you completely gone through your fuseboxes? Have you checked all the relays, fuses, fusible links, all that stuff? Twitch -
rear axle removal
Twitch de la Brat replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So what? :-p Its only 2010 Ok, I've been attempting removing the axle from the outside shaft, and I can't get it. I'm NOT going to disassemble the axle, but I've tried everything to break loose the axle (minus heat, but that's soon to be used) and I can't get it. Any other suggestions? And obviously I searched, how else would I have come up with this thread? Twitch -

Heh, yeah, Brain Rocks I'm getting that installed today Thanks for the map Andy, looks like the end of the trail will make some awesome *ahem* "drifting" area Zap, that sounds great. If we could condense all the needed info into one first post, it'd make getting updates easier. Twitch -

Welcome! And you have a 1993? Wow, you got one of the last years of the BRAT. I hope to get some info from you as well as the info you'll be getting from us. Like, what options does it have? Extra goodies? Extra Emissions? Hope to see you around the board and maybe you can give us a virtual tour of your BRAT sometime Twitch -
Hey, have you heard about the BRAT meet in Ellensburg?
You haven't posted in the thread, so I wasn't sure if you had seen it...

Its usually the general consensus that its not worth the time to rebuild these transmissions. Most people do a 5spd swap, taking a transmission from an EA82 subaru and putting it into an EA81 vehicle, aka your car. Just search tranny swap, or transmission swap. There are a ton of write-ups on it, as well as one in the USRM. Twitch

B.R.A.T. Meet 2010
Twitch de la Brat replied to Fenix747's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
ONE WEEK REMINDER!!!!! Well, I'll Be showing up either late, late Thursday or early as possible Friday. Unfortunately, even though I requested it off, my boss still scheduled me for Monday :-\ So I'll have to leave Sunday night, but no biggie on time as I don't work until 12. I'm just in search of one good driver's side rear drum right now. I won't have time to do both before the meet, but I need to get one good drum. Anybody within an hour's drive have one sitting around? Twitch -
Welcome! Now, have you changed all of the wheel bearings? Front and Rear? Not implying you're an idiot, but we do get those who don't realize some things I agree with the likelyhood of the brakes causing the grinding noise. I've had a brake rub when turning on occasion, so I would definitely go through and check out the conditions of your brakes. Also when you're down there make sure none of your plastic underbody sheeting is rubbing on anything. Check your struts for signs of rubbing along with the plastic. Check out your accessories on the front of your engine as well, as the bearings in your alt or water pump may be going away. Twitch

I topped off Xandra with 2 quarts of oil after she decided to smokescreen my buddy's house. So after I did I added some lucas oil stabilizer (don't vilify me) as my last shot at sealing the rings back up. All this is just to increase the time I have to rebuild my other short block. So yeah, Xandra is going down On to the BRAT!!! I'm pretty much desperate at this point so, does anybody have any decent rear discs or drums just sitting around? Because almost all of my JY hits are grinding or I can't get them off :-\ Twitch

A first post-request 78/9 dl?
Twitch de la Brat replied to Lykoi's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Look for rust everywhere. In that generation the most likely places are the front fenders, rear wheel wells, floorpans, and the underbody. If this is a 4x4 factory model, then you have found an extremely rare gem. If you the owner knows what he has, I wouldn't be afraid to say around 1-1.5k in decent condition. But if he just thinks its a junky old subaru, offer him a few hundred bucks. Twitch -

Ea63?
Twitch de la Brat replied to Twitch de la Brat's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I got to look at it today and its just a slim case EA71. It has a double barrel carb with the exhaust ports dropping out from the bottom of the engine. I had to scrape some gunk off the stamp, but it indeed said EA71. The wagon is a 79. Thanks for the help. Twitch -

No worries, but my GPS msrp's for $600. I'm pretty sure its a very nice one And I agree with my rigs not being too terribly reliable, but its what I experienced. I agree with the greater driveability, the extra gear greatly increases the overall usable power. But I haven't changed tires on mine. So maybe mine is a fluke? Or it might be because I have an 85 transmission, it may have shorter gears. I'll have to look that up. **EDIT** And I did. According to this article, Brain's right. The top gear of the 4sp d/r is .769:1, with a final drive of 3.583 The top gear of the 5sp d/r is .780:1, with a final drive of 3.416 So after multiplying the top gear with the final drive you get... 4sp d/r: 2.755:1 5sp d/r: 2.664:1 (lower is faster) I humbly apologize for the confusion. Unless you wish to cook, I say don't. I know guys who have painted their roofs white, so that it doesn't get so hot (they were wheelers who didn't care what their car looked like, but the principal applies) On that car, I think a nice shade of that champagne on the roof would look good :-p Twitch

B.R.A.T. Meet 2010
Twitch de la Brat replied to Fenix747's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
This winter actually. Right around February. I got the tranny mounted up, but had to wait to get money for a driveshaft. Got the driveshaft bought a month or so later and was able to drive it. Shortly after the timing components went on my lego. And as for the guages not working, my tach works as a tach, but my speedometer doesn't work at all. I have a GPS in the car. I have used the GPS with both transmissions. The 5psd is slightly slower at the same rpm Twitch -

You need tires? Ummmm, are you near any junkyards? Cuz you can usually get a pretty decent set of tires, may not all match :-p, for less than 100 bucks. And if your junkyard is anything like ours, I bet all of your tires will already be mounted for you Twitch -

Twitch de la Brat replied to Fenix747's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Yes, I have. With the same tires, I've driven my BRAT with both a 4spd d/r and a 5spd d/r. The 5spd is just a bit higher at 70 ( I use my tach for a speedometer as my speedometer doesn't work.) I've checked this with my GPS as well. Twitch -
96 VW Jetta III
Twitch de la Brat replied to Twitch de la Brat's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
Well, it turns out that my buddy knew all of this before he bought the car. Not that the car had a problem, but the problems that exist with this model. I also found out that he's just expecting to pull the tranny apart, release it from 3rd, replace the occasional broken part, and drive it till it gets stuck again After all I have been told about these car with their tranny issues, I would junk it, or sell it to some unsuspecting bozo. But to each his own. Twitch -
Ea63?
Twitch de la Brat replied to Twitch de la Brat's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Are there any specific designs or things I should be looking for? I'm going to clean the grime off the front of the engine and see if I can find any sort of marking. Twitch -
I found a 70's wagon out in P&S today, and it had an engine in it that I didn't recognize. I wasn't able to get a picture of it, but it was a flat four, had a round air cleaner top mount starter, and I couldn't find the typical stamp on the front of the engine. It was also small compared to the typical EA81. Is it possible to be a slim case EA71? Or maybe an EA63 like I thought at first? I'm going to try to go back tomorrow and get the parts I was there for originally, but while I'm there I'll take a couple pics and get more details. Twitch
