Proud new BRAT owner questions
Twitch de la Brat replied to Doug_ATX's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Clean lookin' BRAT my man. That has got to be the least stickered BRAT, I have ever seen. No stripes, no sport badging, not even a pinstripe. And btw, Fred, its spelled Tonneau. Sorry, I felt like being the spelling police tonight. Twitch -
Call me bad luck Bobby today
Twitch de la Brat replied to bratgrl's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Hey, I think I spotted an am/fm radio in the jy here in spokane, I'll see if it is. Oh, btw, does anybody know how to get it out with out breaking off the knobs? I have yet to figure that one out. I spent a good hour and a half on it, and am still lost. Twitch -
I have never had to pull the bottom cover plate, so I wouldn't know that method. But a fairly easy way to get something out of the torque converter/flexplate housing is to pull the radiator, or put a piece of carboard in front of it. Then unbolt the engine from the tranny, the flexplate from the torque converter, and the engine mounts. The pitching stopper only needs to be loosened. The intake tube will need to be removed so it doesn't get tweaked or broken. Then lift the engine with a jack and rock it forward. You may have enough room with the rad in there to pull the engine far enough to get to the bottom of the housing, but I highly recommend pulling the rad, so as not to damage it. It may seem like a lot of work, but its actually not that much work and can be done and put back together in 30min to an hour. Twitch

Gl, Dl, Glf, Loyal Differances
Twitch de la Brat replied to Crawlerdan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I feel like playing god and resurrecting something. I must agree with GD on the indestructible engines. I have both and can't kill them. Not that I'm trying... And I believe the main difference is in the engine and drivetrain. Not much else can be verifiably considered "differences" in the models. And even the drivetrain components changed, so just look at everything. Find something that has a few of the options you want, and fill in the rest from the junkyard. Twitch -
With the weight reduction of a buggy, it may be able to handle the 26 tires. I would look into an early 4EAT though. It'll give you a better gearing ratio and stronger gearing, seeing that it was designed to push around a bigger car than an GL's. Just find one in the jy that's wrecked, no beautiful bodies to pull from. Chances are the nice ones have an issue. Idk if the 4EAT came in a selectable 4wd for though... Just keep checking, I'm sure you'll find something that suits your needs. Twitch

Thermostat question.
Twitch de la Brat replied to tysree's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I believe the thermoswitch is on the passenger side of the radiator. I would look at the wires going to it, make sure they're ok. If they're fine, the switch is probably your problem. I would recommend you wire a manual switch to those wires. All you need to turn the fan on is to ground it from those wires, I believe. Best wishes on getting it figured out! Twitch PS: I second you replacing the theremostat, it may be sticking, causing part of your problem. -
Thermostat question.
Twitch de la Brat replied to tysree's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It may be the thermosensor/thermoswitch on the side of the radiator. That may be failing and not turning the fan on, causing the car to get hot. Just a guess Twitch -
Douglas Tires
Twitch de la Brat replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
From what I've seen, the Winterforce. I think its made by Cooper, but I'm not sure. You'd probably be better off getting atv rims and tires for real traction. Twitch PS: I think its the 95-02 Suzuki Quadrunner that has the same lug pattern -
Thanls Ed, and I didn't mean to start a spat over all this... Thank you GD as well. The craftsman 42885, got it. Back to the original topic... Twitch

+2 to GD. I would replace, rebuild or EJ swap. Lets see you performance rebuild that thing like Backwoodsboy! TWitch

Hey guys, what did y'all use to drive out the roll pin? I'm working on getting my axles out of my 90 lego. Twitch

You guys must not like your change holders Actually, I believe that's one of the best places for a cb. No worries about the mic hitting you in the head when you go over a bump... I think I may install a cb in my brat now... Twitch

So did it fix the problem? And I was going to say, you could try tapping a nail into it that is the right size and bending the end over so it doesn't fall out. I think it would flex enough to not shear too quickly. Just an idea... Twitch

Douglas Tires
Twitch de la Brat replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To tell you the truth, I've never heard of the douglas brand of tires. I wonder if they're a knockoff brand. I would toss them if they seem overly loud or unstable. Twitch -
AC Clutch Fan
Twitch de la Brat replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That'd be funny. A propeller on the front of an EA82 wagon... Put fake wings on the doors The ss Guido! Twitch(ing) -
AC Clutch Fan
Twitch de la Brat replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I agree with Evildead, if you t-stat is dying, chuck it. It'll cause you more problems having it in there, than not. Plus, going into summer you won't really need it until about september. It gives you just that much more time to get around to it. I would suggest putting a sticky note on your steering wheel about it. And the fan helps pull that much more heat off the radiator. It actually does something that the engineers designed it to do, amazing!! :-p But yeah, dump the clutch fan and the t-stat. You'll be better off without them. Plus you'll be able to replace that clutch fan with a better quieter slim fan! Twitch(ing) -
AC Clutch Fan
Twitch de la Brat replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is Guido an EA81 or EA82? This is for Guido, right? Anyway, you sould be able to find a good EA82 slimfan in the jy, an EA81 will probably be harder to find though. And if you have a sticky t-stat, then there is going to be reduced coolant flow in the radiator, so the extra fan won't do anything but blow more air over the engine And for these subaru engines, its enough in a pinch, but I would not recommend that you try it (trust me, you don't want to try it.) Good luck on finding a slim fan! (So I guess this means I recommend getting rid of your clutch fan ) Twitch -
Well, if you want weather band, just get a stereo that has that tuner! :-p And some of the 96-99 limited outbacks had that capability, it you want to stick with subaru only Twitch

I'm afraid Davebugs is right. You may be able to find more upgrade stuff on NASIOC.com But, there are a few on here who may be able to help you out... I would ask GeneralDisorder, he has a HUGE collection of knowledge about subarus. Numbchux is very upgrade happy, so he may be a possible source. Suberdave may be able to help you as well. Hope it helps! Twitch PS: do you have a manual or an auto?
-
It looks like you could. I would just check measurements on both the ashtray compartment and the CB. Best of luck to you. TWitch

I believe those may be for a position sensor? And my EA81's oil pan gasket oozes, so it may very well be.
