  1. I too would pull the motor to do the job. And I did. I had my motor out, by myself, in less than 1 hour! Then from there it's just taking old parts off and putting new ones on, maybe a little cleaning, and then putting it all back in!
  2. Probably a good idea, just so you don't pull them apart when you move the tranny/lift it
  3. Sounds good to me! If you can do it in a Legacy you can do it in your Brat. It's a lot alike. Very straight forward, but less parts and stuff to remove than your Legacy. The bolts do go through the bellhousing and they don't thread into the block, they are just bolts with nuts and then the two lower bellhousing nuts as well. Have fun and good luck!
  4. Looking good! So yeah slap a lift in there, and also maybe do something with the hood, and see about tilting the tranny. You'll get it! Obviously you're into it so that's the hardest part is getting your mind into it!! I'm also extremely jealous of your garage!! I want one! It's sweet that you have a CAD to use!! Sweet pics and keep 'em coming! Looking forward to seeing more progress! Oh and I'm still waiting on a box. I think my mother in law has one so I just have to wait for her to bring it to me!!!
  5. Well honestly I would say that 95% of us need the 4wd and the clearance for where we live. But it's cool and unique so go for it!
  6. That's sweet! I'd never thought of that before. But yeah Those axles are gonna need to be longer and maybe a cup that allows for a higher angle. Cool idea
  7. Yeah I bet if you pulled your disty cap, it would look worn. Also you really should use NGK plugs. They are about 11.00 bucks for your car. I know cause I just got some from NAPA a little while ago!
  8. Again, you better get in touch with Backinbrat, he has done what you want to do, and had luck with it.
  9. Oh I get what you were getting at now. I thought you were talking about putting it in the front. oops my bad
  10. So I found a pic of the stamp that you should find on your motor, so here it is. Hope this helps
  11. Nice job so far! Looks good, I still can't wait to see it in action!! And thanks for the great descriptions and pics!
  12. Wow! I've never heard that description of a subaru and never seen one that bad! I agree about how much junk a minivan is! An ex girlfriend's family always had minivans, and they always sagged in the rear, they went through three tranny's for each one they owned, and the gas mileage was terrible, and to work on them was impossible!
  13. Much better! Shame about the rear bumper cover:-\ But nice car! I've always wanted one, I'd even take a Legacy turbo wagon! But cool car, good luck with it!
  14. I bought a 92 Loyale. The previous owner(a friend of mine) had not touched the car for nearly 40,000 miles. I bought the car, put 70,000 miles of ABUSE on the car, and then sold it,(to another friend) and it kept going for another nearly 20,000 miles before it rusted out and couldn't be driven. Never was the timing belt or anything under the timing covers touched! That adds up to 130,000 miles!! Now being conservative it still would be around 120,000. I then bought another EA82, a 1989 touring wagon. I put a fresh motor in it and ran that one for roughly 75,000 miles, with no problems with the timing belt. Both were previously maintained by my friend the subaru mechanic, and this was normal for the life of the timing belts he installed. Now I'm not saying that it may be a bad idea to retension the belts but I believe if they are put on correctly it helps a lot! Now my friend taught me in a similar way, as in putting them on turning the motor over repeatedly and then retensioning them. It always worked for him:-\
  15. Sweet! Lets see some more pics! I'm jealous I've always wanted one ever since I drove one! And the one I drove was smashed bad in the front!
  16. possibly a vacuum leak. I dunno about the high voltage though
  17. I have heard of several rear diffs mounted upside down for this type of application. And I've never heard of it being a problem. This project is looking awesome! It makes me want to do something to mine once it gets rusty enough! Looks awesome so far!!
  18. As far as fitting in the engine bay and hooking up to the stock tranny, they all are the same size and they all need an adapter to hook the motor to the stock tranny. Yup sorry! Except for the 2.5's, the DOHC 2.5's are too big. But I would recommend a 2.2 anyway, they as a rule are much more reliable
  19. Thanks for the link. I have never seen one lower than like 65 bucks! So it's good to know they can be had cheaper. The one in my car right now is an ebay one and it's worked great ever since I put it in!
