Headlight conversion complete!
bratman18 replied to bratman18's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I had to learn how to do it and Monstaru had to help a little as well. I had to cut out the sheet metal between the stock quad setup. Then kind of trace the round lamp onto the existing metal and trim where needed. Then kind of figure out where everything lined up. New holes had to be drilled for the lights. They are a couple bits and pieces you have to grab off of the donor car...like the metal brackets that hold the headlight bezels and the grill in place. But it is pretty straight forward as long as you have all the pieces and parts, which Brian was kind enough to include!! And to all, feel free to copy the bumper design and I do have a couple pics of it being made if anyone wants them. Thanks for all the compliments!! -

The factory lights are sealed beams but these are aftermarket that fit right in and you can change out the actual bulb...and thanks for the compliments! -

Sweet! What are the plans for it? It's got some rust but not beyond repair. -
Pics? And where are you mounting it?

Yeah especially here on the east coast! I have only seen one other. -
i ripped a front wheel of my subaru!

Yes make sure the axle goes on the right way. It's very easy to get it 180* off. When you put it on take your punch and make sure that slides through with ease, if it doesn't take it off and rotate it 180* and try again! Good luck! -
I used a fel-pro gasket. Never tried RTV. I suppose it would work as long as you made sure not to smudge it all while putting the pan back on

New Subaru

Sounds like you got a decent price, the original ones were going for around that price so the fact you got a brand new one with the extras is pretty good. I want one! Probably after my RS is paid off, I'll try to get one! I'm gonna get a wagon so I can convince the wife that it's a family car! -

It's a custom made bumper. A friend of mine did most of the work. I love it, It's quite unique especially for a Subaru! and it certainly takes a beating and protects the front end!! -
I purchased a headlight conversion "kit" from Monstaru a little while back and finally got it put on! Here are some pics, what do ya think?

Neither could I, and I haven't, ever since I swapped my first one into a 3AT Loyale!!

yeah the whole motor is right under the hood, so I'm gonna take it apart when I get the chance and clean it etc. Thanks again and I will post my results!
-
I bet the biggest factor there was the fact that it was a turbo, even though they aren't known for the huge power, it's still a big difference from the N/A motor.
-
You need the tranny and all the shift linkage and shifters and 4WD lever, all the interior trim that surrounds.....if you want it to look okay, and that's pretty much it. Obviously look for anything that might be needed in the general area. Good luck and you'll love the results!!!

+1, not a bad idea, It would be a good opportunity to really check the motor over, and you could still replace the tranny seals pretty easily by removing the axles from the tranny end. -
any decent body parts, lights, trim, I save all the metric bolts as well...but that's just me, ummm, maybe some interior pieces, I would personally try to save good suspension pieces as well and maybe some whole crossmembers, axles, but again that's just me:)

Thanks guys! I will try cleaning and lubing first and if that doesn't work I'll try replacing it!

alright that's what I figured, I'm not after power out my EA81, I knbow better I was just curious. I have another motor kickin around and if there was any substantial difference then I was thinking about resealing it and dropping it in but thanks guys you answered my questions!
