Brat rear disk brakes
bratman18 replied to XTREME RACING's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I semi disagree with the part about them helping to stop faster...in my brat it made a huge difference! But maybe you experienced different?! -
Brat reconstruction update (11/16 exhaust)

Come to a junk yard in Maine that's all you see! Most are worse than that and in no way could you ever save them! -

Replace HG's without pulling engine?
bratman18 replied to subieman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If it were me.. I know a lot of people have a different opinion but I would pull the motor, honestly it would probably take me less time to tackle the job with pulling the motor. When the motor is out you can see everything and inspect everything, and there's nothing to get in the way! -
First time Owner 87' GL Wagon Help PLz
bratman18 replied to Caramanos2000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you can get a tranny swap done for that little...do it but try for a dual range its the same tranny swap but the tranny is much better. I agree with GD about the motor but run it for now considering you just did work to it. And I also agree with him about being able to do the tranny swap cheaper myself but thats a good price if you are having someone else do it. I also second bleeding the brakes. Good luck! -
That guy can drive that was awesome!

Hmmm, I put wrx suspension in my old '97 impreza I had and found the ride to be great and handling to be better as well, don't really know why they would be bad in a legacy??? Are you saying that the control arm is hard to move or the sway bar? Either way they are going to be pretty stiff. The control arm bushing will keep that pretty taught when disconnected and the sway bar is meant to be stiff. Hope this helps and sorry if I misunderstood:)

Brake bias valve
bratman18 replied to ()__1337_CRAYOLA__()>'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have the rear disc conversion on my brat and I have had to panic stop several times, and never has it stopped anything but dead straight even on wet or slippery surfaces! That was actually one of the things I was so impressed about after doing the conversion. I didn't change anything as far as proportioning valves nor did I add any! And I have used them with stock size and big tires. -
Thats funny! My first loyale which I converted to 5 spd d/r and lifted, I put close to 100,000 miles on after I bought it and I'm pretty sure the belts hadn't been done for a while before I got it. I beat the crap out of that car on and off road, I went almost 40,000 miles without changing the oil, and I never changed the belts or had them break! I sold it when I got a new car and two years later it was still going strong!! I have never had to do belts on any ea82 that I've owned! But I guess I was just really lucky!
-
I second that! I don't have a clutch fan on my brat, just an electric and it never gets hot.
-
That looks awesome! Thats something i'd like to do!

I had an Impreza auto and the only time I put the fuse in was when I want to burn off a set of tires! That's the only power difference, it was able to burn out really good. As far as acceleration and what not it was no different or not noticeably different! Yeah I love the old ones too you should keep an eye out for another!
-
Only the autos came with the fuse holder under the hood and you have to put a fuse in to make it fwd. Some people say that it does increase gas mileage but I found it doesn't! You are still turning all the same drive gear there is just no power to it! But I'm sure that someone will have a different opinion. If its in the shape you say it is hopefully you didn't pay much for it!

I can't remember exactly what I did but I had mine machined!
-
Well sand is a very dense material and "sucks" up a lot of a vehicles power. So you probably wanna go with a fairly conservative size. Probably something that measures 26-27 inches will work okay But I definately wouldn't go any bigger than that! You are going to notice quite a difference in power with those already so If you are able to measure anything and maybe even mock up than that might work.
-
What size lift are you using? Those are pretty big! You want to remember that it is just a little subaru with like 90 horse! So you want to have enough power to turn them! But I have 205/75/14 on my brat with a 3" lift I could go an inch or so bigger with no mod but I don't have a lot of power! Those measured 26 and 1/4 inches new.
-
Awesome well make sure you post some pics when you get it done!!! What are you using for tires I know you purchased some pugs. That thing is gonna be sweet when you get the tranny, lift and wheels and tires on it!
-
Sweet You are gonna love the 5 spd d/r! I remember my first swap, what a difference! Keep us posted on your progress! When are you getting the lift?
