Thanks for the info about the Schrader valve, Rooster. Those are the little gems that are very helpful to folks on a board like this.

Finally tracked down some info! It's all bits-and-pieces from years ago but I hope it helps you. Back when I did mine, one of my best resources was the exploded view drawing in the Haynes Manual, page 7A-2. Here's "subylovr's" write-up (he changed his user name to "DerFahrer")--but pictures are gone: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/60847-shifter-bushing-replacement/?hl=%2Bshifter+%2Bbushings&do=findComment&comment=493970 Another write-up (but the photos don't seem to be accessible): http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/37332-legacy-mt-shift-linkage-photos-here/ Here are some good pix of the parts from Nasioc: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=742063 Ask any questions you have . . . maybe more specifics will come back to me! And good luck--it's really worth the effort if you can bear with the pain!

Forget the multiple paint marks! Look for the little hash marks cast in the outer rim of the cam sprockets. Hard to tell for sure, but on the left (driver's side) sprocket it looks like the hash mark might be in the pink paint. On the right (passenger's side) looks like it's in the gray paint. Where's your right side rear timing belt cover? Would help you if you had the notch to line up with. The crank sprocket appears to be lined up correctly.

What Fairtax said--it's definitely the bushings in the "boss joint" (the u-joint thingy) that connects the shifter rod to the tranny input. Been a lot of discussion of the job over the years. Try a "search"--go to advanced search, enter shifter bushings and choose New Gen Forum. Here's something I wrote up in '07: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/73273-shifter-bushing-happiness/?hl=%2Bshifter+%2Bbushings Good luck!

Thanks, Paul. Gave me a bit of a shock seeing his own name posting in a thread announcing his passing! Hope you and your Mother and your brothers can take some pleasure from knowing how well liked--and well respected--your Dad was. All the best to you all going forward. Nick Carter

That's a great idea, Qman. A nice tribute to a good man--would help keed Ed's spirit alive.

What a wonderful man. I never met him face to face but he helped me many times. His caring and sincerity will live on, in a small way, right here on the board. My warmest condolences to the family. Me ke Aloha Pumehana, Ed. Rest in Peace.

Welcome to the USMB! Sounds like you happened on to a great deal with the wagon. Just to clarify, if your '97 has its original motor it is interference. '96 was the last year for the non-interference 2.2l. You can put larger wheels on the car--15" for sure--just make sure they have the 5 X 100 lug pattern and proper offset. There's tons of great Subie info on here--try the "search" function (use advanced search so you can limit your results to the New Generation forum)--it's a goldmine! Good luck. -
New owner (to an old Subaru).

Hi Nick. I'm Nick too--but I was banished to Hawai'i many, many years ago! Welcome to the USMB. I know nada about auto trannies but I'm sure the gurus here will offer help. You might want to ask for "technical help" in the New Generation forum--you'll catch more eyeballs there. Best of luck and again, welcome! -
Congratulations, Adventure! You might want to consider throwing a small bottle of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil!) in the crankcase. Do it for the last 100 miles or so before an oil change. I'm not a "crankcase additive" guy--but this stuff really works to clean up those small passages the oil has to squeeze through!

Welcome to the USMB, JAPferd. From your description it sounds like you got the timing belt on correctly. (By "center cam" I assume you mean the cam sprocket.) Did you compress the tensioner, pin it, position it properly--then release it after the belt is in place? Does the engine sound smooth--despite the fluctuating idle? Timing belt shouldn't cause the idle problem. That could be the IACV or more likely the rubber hoses under the air intake tube--were they taken off and not reconnected maybe? Good luck.
