  1. Borrow one! Buy one! Take the car to a parts store where they'll read codes for you! It would be very unwise to buy a car with a CEL on and not know what it's for.
  2. Or . . . an alternate point of view! Last O2 sensor I put in was a Bosch Universal--purchased at a very good price off Amazon. Car ran beautifully for the rest of its life.
  3. Scan it before you buy it! You'll get a lot of valuable information before you slap your money down.
  4. Are you sure? My '95 is OBD2 and I've never seen one that isn't. But if by chance it is OBD1 you can still pull the codes with test connections under the dash. BTW, It'll probably take more than fresh fluids to dump codes! Good luck.
  5. You're doing good! If you have an OBD2 code reader take it with you Wednesday and find out exactly what the codes are. And don't be afraid to try bargaining the price down--based on salvage title and work that needs to be done. Good luck!
  6. Welcome aboard, Kenichi. You found a great place here--folks will give all the advice and help you could ask for. Fair warning however--they will demand to see pictures! Hope your daughter's a Sweetie and appreciates what you're doing for her! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
  7. I think the "little plastic bits that get pushed in" are just "bumpers"--to soften the blow of closing the hatch--maybe to provide a bit of push when you unlock it. But sorry, I can't remember seeing a light switch/button back there myself.
  8. Welcome aboard--and congratulations! I think you took a very smart approach to the "extras."
  9. Hi Andrew--welcome aboard. Wow, that looks like a new car! Good find. Can't help you with the carb, but if you post questions in the Old Gen forum you'll probably get lots of response. Good luck with your cross-country trip--sounds like fun.
  10. Sorry Brian, I don't know of any secret handshakes. You might try disconnecting the battery for an hour or two, see what happens. Hopefully someone else will chime in with ideas. Good luck.
  11. If the CEL (Check Engine Light) is still on the car's computer must think there's still a problem--maybe something other than the O2 sensor. Did you check for codes again after you installed the new sensor? What brand sensor did you use? How did you connect the wires--solder? Crimp? Some kind of "connector box" provided by the manufacturer? Does the car seem to be running better (or at least okay!) with the new sensor installed?
  12. Nice find--great looking Subie! And welcome to the USMB.
  13. Contact ShawnW here on the USMB for an estimate or recommendations--he has a shop (RetroRoo Subaru Service) in North Denver.
  14. Ah, flingability--a rare and highly desirable quality. Welcome aboard, Peter. You're going to love this place. Best resource a Subaru owner can have!
  15. How's the condition of the car overall? Do you like it? Give serious consideration to replacing the engine with a used EJ22. Buy one for a reasonable price, invest $200 for new timing belt/idlers/water pump & re-seal, slap it in. Would give you another 100k or more of dependable, generally trouble-free driving!
  16. Welcome to the USMB. Sorry to hear about your misfortune--but you'll get good, honest, straightforward advice here. Sounds like classic headgasket failure, very common in the 2.5 liter DOHC engines. I think your seller knew exactly what he was selling! You have two options: 1) Replace the headgasket, which may or may not be a good option depending on the severity of the overheating. Or 2) Replace the entire engine with the "bulletproof" EJ22 from '95 or '96 model--a little less power but super reliable. It's a fairly simple "plug-and-play" swap. Talk to your mechanic about it--and by all means ask any questions you have here on the board. Again--welcome. And good luck.
  17. Welcome aboard, San Juan Sube. USMB is the best possible resource you could find for practical Subie knowledge. And congratulations on your car--it looks great. In my mind the perfect vehicle to "learn about cars!" Dang, makes me miss my old DL and GL wagons. Many happy miles to you.
  18. Anyone know of a good old-fashioned "Mom-and Pop" muffler/exhaust repair shop in the Seattle area? We need to get a broken pipe welded back together! Thanks.
  19. The 15" rims should fit just fine as is--provided they are standard Subaru width and offset. Just don't get carried away with super wide or super tall tires!
  20. Welcome home, azsubaru! Now let's get going on that Legacy!!!
  21. You probably know this already--great opportunity to "freshen up" the front end! Make sure you use a Subaru OEM or equivalent water pump gasket (coated metal--not the "paper" kind!) Might consider a new thermostat too--again OEM or equivalent (don't use a parts store cheapie!) Replace all idlers and make sure the tensioner is in good condition. Replace o-rings in the cam caps (left front and right rear.) Pull the oil pump off and check the backing plate screws--they tend to loosen. Loctite them! Remount the oil pump with new o-ring and ultra-grey or anaerobic sealant. Install new crank and cam seals Make sure you know the proper marks for aligning the crank & cams ("Never the arrows!!!") Oh, and when you put the harmonic balancer pulley back on, use the German method: "Gutentight!" Good luck. Ask questions if you need to . . . and have fun!
