  1. Beg to differ Fairtax, but the ETC can cause problems in any weather. Ask me how I know.
  2. Might be a good idea to pull the plugs and inspect them. Should be okay at two years--but who knows?!! (If I were going to pull them, I'd probably just replace them anyway!) See if you can identify the brand of plug wires. If they're some aftermarket brand, I'd replace them with OEM or NGKs--Subarus can be real touchy about the wires. Good luck!
  3. Welcome aboard Bill. Yes, you can replace the knock sensor yourself. Not too difficult at all, just follow what the threads tell you. By the way, if you check online or even on ebay you can save quite a bit over dealer pricing for the KS. How many miles on the car? How many since it's had a tune-up? New fuel filter & air filter are probably a good idea. New PCV valve and clean the hoses connecting it. New plugs (use NGKs) and new plug wires (use OEM or possibly NGK--but no cheapie aftermarket) may help a lot, especially if it's been awhile. Good luck!
  4. Congrats vamos--glad you got the problem solved--and for a reasonable price! (Yikes . . . $823???)
  5. Thanks for the excellent diagram CNY_Dave. At last I can visualize how all the parts--hub, bearings, knuckle--fit together! Yes, a picture really is worth a thousand words.
  6. Exactly! I JBWelded a crack in my wife's Maxima. Patch held great, but within a few weeks the old plastic cracked again a few inches away.
  7. Yeah, I kinda looked green too. With envy, when I saw how clean your engine is!
  8. Yes they do line up again after so many revolutions. Someone posted the number on here a long time ago. But it's irrelevant! If you got the timing right the first time it'll run just fine--and you'll never know when it's lined up!!!
  9. Welcome to USMB! If you post your question in the "New Gen" forum you'll get much better response. Good luck with the problem.
  10. I'm so proud of you young-uns!!! Welcome to USMB all--you're gonna fit right in.
  11. What a great thing to do for your daughter. I'll bet she loves her Daddy!
  12. Ain't it the truth. USMB is so much more than a "fix-it message board," it's the way life should be lived! Here's one more for good measure:
  13. Welcome aboard zoieface! (Okay, now you can go ahead and ask all the dumb questions you want.) J/k--Welcome . . . sincerely.
  14. Yes I am . . . and unfortunately no I don't! 2002ForesterGuy--I'd be happy to offer any input or help that I can (which may not be much!). Email me at ncarter1(at)hawaii(dot)rr(dot)com.
  15. Lucky you, psychocandy--you can have the thrill and satisfaction of doing it yourself, all the while smiling as you mentally add up all the money you're saving! Forget TDC, just line up all the timing marks. Remember, you're using the little hash marks--NOT the arrows. And use the opportunity to replace the water pump, the idlers, the cam & crank seals and re-seal the oil pump. Use the search function here on USMB--lots of good discussion and some excellent links to other resources. Good luck.
  16. Check prices on Edmunds, what they call TMV (True Market Value)--usually a lot more realistic on the prices, supposedly based on actual sales.
  17. Oh come on now, Ptmacp, tell us how you really feel. (Welcome aboard--you're gonna' love this place!)
  18. Don't forget plugs (most basic NGK coppers) , wires (must be OEM or NGK--don't waste your money on parts store cheapies), fuel & air filters.
  19. Happy to oblige! I deal almost exclusively with Jason at Mike Scarff Subaru in Auburn, WA. Good guy, very pleasant, extremely knowledgable and always seems to have the best prices. What more could a Subie lover want? And good for you, Shawn--go get that MBA!
  20. Welcome aboard Brian. If you post your question in the New Gen Forum chances are better that you'll get some helpful responses.
  21. Welcome to USMB leniac. Keep reading the forums, ask questions, use the "search" function--hopefully the good folk here can offer help. And don't worry about your English--you make yourself perfectly clear!
