  1. For clarity and consistency, directions (left & right) on a vehicle are always given from the point of view of the driver sitting behind the steering wheel!
  2. Just for the sake of accuracy, the water pump is at the bottom right of the photograph. It's actually at the bottom left of the motor.
  3. You don't need to drop the tank IIRC. Remove the cover plate under the rear seat and remove the pump from the top.
  4. Welcome torerik. Congrats on your new Subie--please send us some pix when you're allowed to (after 10 posts?) Looks like you have some absolutely beautiful countryside to drive in.   7. Interesting. Never heard of anyone using a gasket for the oil pump and I don't believe Subaru (FHI) ever did on the EJ. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
  8. You don't need a "gasket kit." EJ engines don't have a "main housing gasket", they seal with an O-ring and a bead of anaerobic or Ultra-Grey sealant.

  11. I would definitely replace the plug wires--use Subaru OEM only. Would also replace the PCV, plus clean the hoses leading to it and check them for splits & cracks. Sorry, no embarrassing stories, none that I'll tell here anyway! Good luck and let us know.

  14. You have every right to rant. It's amazing to me how some people don't realize that kicking a customer around can come back to bite them in the tail!
  15. Not sure if the design changed for your car, but on my '95 (EJ22) I found it best to remove the IACV from the engine to give it a thorough cleaning. Also clean or replace the hoses leading to and from it and use a new gasket. If that doesn't work I'd look for a used one. Good luck.

  17. Change your transmission fluid--drain and fill 3 times. It's a good place to start.
  18. When we bought a high mileage '92 Legacy a few years back it had a new timing belt. On the test drive I heard a definite "whirring" sound. Asked the shop owner, Dan at RooPair Specialties in Tacoma, about it he said not to worry, that it would settle in and loosen a bit. It did and we never had a front-end problem.

  20. Great options, geckolizard. For planning purposes, keep in mind that they will have to open up the engine's front end to do what you ask. That becomes an excellent time to replace timing belt, tensioner, idlers and waterpump--a real time/labor savings in the long run. If you need them, that is. Just something else to ponder!
