  1. Now that's funny, Fairtax. I accepted what you said . . . until you ratted on yourself!!!
  2. Welcome aboard, Rob. You've found a great place here for friendly help. Sounds like you've got your "fun" laid out for you! Enjoy and good luck!
  3. Well that decides it, will reuse the existing nuts. Wouldn't want to detract from that mellow '92 look! Big mahalos, gentlemen.
  4. Thanks, that's good to hear! The last post in this thread explains the arrow ("search" is truly your friend!): http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=107298&highlight=crank+sprocket+arrow
  5. YOU DON'T USE THE ARROW ON THE CRANK SPROCKET! Do a search for the proper procedure. Are you working on an EJ22 or an EJ25?
  6. Mahalo guys, appreciate the input. Nice pictures (as usual) porc!
  7. Thanks Noah, that's my thinking too. Am planning to use MWE axles--from what I've read they do not come with a new nut. Any other strong feelings either way?
  8. Gonna replace the front axles on my son's '92 Legacy pretty soon. I know new axle nuts are always recommended but what do you guys do (in real life!)?
  9. No bad, ydeardorff. As far as I know Subaru information doesn't expire after 3 years. Although you did take away our chance to say "Try a search, it's been talked about before!!!"
  10. What mark did you use to line up the crank sprocket? The cam pulleys? Did your belt have alignment marks on it? What are you going to use the timing gun for?
  11. Did you plug in all the connectors--crank & cam sensors, spark plugs? Anything else you might have unplugged? Are you sure you lined up the crank sprocket and the cam pulleys to the correct marks--that nothing moved off alignment as you struggled with the belt and idler? Ya' just know it's gonna' be something simple! :-\
  12. You're certainly welcome. Goobysoobs. Just curious, you did remove and compress the tensioner while hanging the belt didn't you?
  13. Take off the bottom right (passenger's side) idler. Once the belt is hung it's not difficult to reposition it and bolt it on.
  14. Here's a link to the Endwrench article johnc referenced: http://endwrench.com/pdf/engine/FtTimingBeltReplaceF00.pdf Hope this helps.
  15. Yes . . . don't!!! Swing by Subaru and throw down a couple of dollars extra for the correct thermostat. Seriously, aftermarket 'stats are not good for a Subie--stick with OEM on this one. Edit: OOOOPS! Guess I had Thermostats on my mind!!! Sorry.
  16. If it's a manual tranny put it in 5th gear, set the hand brake and one of you push hard on the brake pedal while the other wrenches on the bolt. Or you could try the "starter bump" method. The TB cover screws are a pain--the metal holders break free of the plastic and just spin. You may have to look for replacement plastic covers.
  17. Sorry to sound like a downer, Suba, but it strikes me you're trying to overdo everything. Or you're getting some bum advice. For example, EJ22s have an excellent record with head gaskets. Sure they can fail but it happens very rarely. The EJ25 on the other hand has an extremely poor track record! New radiator--why? Is your old one leaking or are you having overheating problems? New thermostat, probably a good idea. But a thermostat housing--why? Is your old one bad? Seals and gaskets--personally I'd stick with Subaru OEM on all these. Also, get a new front crank seal. Oil pump seal is a process not an item--you'll need a new o-ring, Permatex Grey and maybe a dab of Loctite. Do a search and read up on it. New O2 sensor--you probably just need the front one. Check out the Bosch universal on Amazon, great price. Good luck with your project. And keep asking questions when in doubt.
  18. Head gasket on an EJ22? Unless you know something we don't know, it's probably not necessary. Oil pan gasket--are you positive it's leaking? Rear main crank seal, you're better off not touching it unless you know for sure it's bad. The rest of it you can do yourself with less than $200 in parts. Just my .02!
  19. Right you are, Fairtax. '96 manual tranny was EJ22, but that was the last time in an Outback (at least in a factory Outback!)
  20. Nah . . . if you pull real hard you can usually get one belt around everything! The EJ22 is not "dual cam"--it's Single Overhead Cam (but there are two of them!)
