  1. FYI re starter contacts, there are some good pix in here: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=41495 And if you search starter contacts here on USMB there are a number of threads over the years.
  2. I'm so sorry my friend--called the airport earlier to book a flight but no one answered (it was a nice day, guess everyone went to the beach!) But in my absence would suggest you try the ECTS and new plugs/wires. I have a feeling that might clear up a lot of your problems. By the way, make sure you get the sensor that talks to the ECU (it usually has a brick red head) and NOT the one that controls the Temp Gauge. There are pics in this thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=75009&highlight=ects+coolant+temp+sensor&page=2 Then if there's still a starting problem we'll have to deal with it later! I've never had a problem with coils so can't offer any help there. As far as I know they rarely fail. Good luck.
  3. I believe the terms are often used interchangably. You might check Bosch prices on Amazon.com--great price and free shipping last time I bought one.
  4. Definitely replace the ECTS (Engine Coolant Temp Sensor)--it's a relatively cheap fix and will most likely solve a lot of your problems. Not hard to do . . . once you find it and figure out how to get a wrench on it! Get the sensor and see if you can find an independent shop or backyard mechanic to swap it in for you. Also agree with changing the plugs (NGK coppers, they're cheap) and plug wires (Subaru OEM, a bit pricey but worth it). What happens when the car "refuses to start?" Does it not crank over or does it crank but not fire off? If it's the latter a new ECTS might solve the problem. It's worth the effort to get the car running well even if you decide to sell it--it'll sell better! Anyway, good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions here.
  5. That is one good looking Legacy/Outback, Durania. And '95 is a very good year (yes, I'm prejudiced!)
  6. Ho, da sexy pictures. Especially the tail light one!
  7. Never done it on a Subaru so can't help you with specifics. But I did replace a broken mast on the wife's Maxima a few years ago. Took the entire unit out to clean it and check out the mechanism. Really wasn't too much of a pain (easy for me to say now, years later!) Got a very reasonably priced replacement mast from these folks IIRC: http://www.antennamastsrus.com/ Just followed whatever directions came with the mast and whatever I could find on the internet. Went rather easily. Good luck.
  8. Welcome aboard dancindan and Highway_Star--great place here (except for Crown Vics!)
  9. That's totally unneccesary, Amos & Buster. People were trying to help you within an hour of your original post. But communication is a two way street--it requires feedback to proceed. A simple "thank you" would get you a lot farther than childish outbursts. Good luck with your problem.
  10. Don't know how to break this to you gently, but common wisdom says to use only Subaru OEM head gaskets on the EJ25. You might want to stop and do some reading here on USMB before proceeding. Good luck, hope the aftermarket ones work out for you if you go ahead with them.
  11. I agree johnc. His pattern is correct but that bead is way too sloppy. Needs to be a small even bead that will not squeeze out into the interior chambers--or the result will be what you're facing now.
  12. No idea about the Isuzu pulley--I suppose you could study it and measure carefully to see if it might work. Or try pricing it online, or call Jason (Parts Manager at Mike Scarff Subaru, 866-528-5282). Might even try local Pull-and-Pays or salvage yards. Good luck.
  13. Yes, it should definitely turn. Undoubtedly that's what burned up your old belt. You might want to remove the new belt until you get a new (or used) replacement pulley. Good luck.
  14. Not trying to pick nits here gang, but there was no solution given on page 2. At any rate, thanks for the closure bbenton. And thanks for asking edrach.
  15. Just to further confuse things! Be aware that the EJ22 became an interference engine starting with the '97 model year. This may or may not be of concern to you. Try a search. There's lots of good reading about the 2.2L and swaps. Good luck.
  16. Welcome TMoney. You are obviously a very intelligent person (you're here!) What do we, the "expert owners," think? By and large I'd say we think Subaru builds fine vehicles but hey, we're prejudiced! I've driven them for 25 years and absolutely love the technology. That said, there are some model years I wouldn't touch--the early 2.5L engines had real head gasket issues. However I understand the problems have been solved in recent years. My experience only goes up to '95 and the wonderful "bulletproof" EJ22. But overall they are excellent cars with many good features--AWD, flat-4 engine that is relatively easy to work on, parts that are reasonably priced. In short I think you're making a wise choice to consider a Subaru.
  17. Welcome swamp truck! Great place here for info and discussion, I think you'll enjoy it.
  18. Welcome aboard! You might want to post your question in the New Gen forum--you'll get more eyeballs there.
  19. You might try adding some MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) in your crankcase for a few hundred miles--or until the tick goes away. Then drain and fill with fresh motor oil. It did the trick in my son's '92 Legacy. Good luck.
  20. Congrats heartless--it's a great feeling isn't it? My son's '92 Legacy was running just fine but showed a CEL for the O2 sensor. We put a new one in (a Bosch) and immediately it felt like a brand new engine!
  21. Welcomes, jonjon. You're gonna' love this place!
