Hmmm, just the opposite from what I remember reading awhile back! You might want to try a search to confirm. First, give the thread area a few treatments with a good quality penetrating oil or spray (NOT WD-40!) over a period of a day or so. Second, warm the engine up a bit before attempting to loosen it. Worked quite well for me. Good luck.

When this thread first appeared it made me very uneasy. I found myself wishing it would just dry up and blow away. Although I feel I am an open minded person, I deplore snake oil and I absolutely detest snake oil salesmen. To the degree that my mind was made up . . . and closed! Then someone comes along and blows me away. Thanks ferox for a beautifully written presentation. Thanks for re-opening my mind. By the way, I'm a firm believer in garage science. It's what made this country great. Henry Ford started with garage science and (if I remember my automotive lgends correctly) had to knock part of the garage wall down to get his first motorcar out to the street! Thanks too to lostinthe202 for defending openmindedness. And to Reveen for the wonderful "10hp Geo Metro!" Who knows, it could very well be a Subaru lover who makes "the next big breakthrough." Maybe even a USMB member! Aloha all.

I doubt, from your description, that the leaks would cause low oil pressure. But an oil pump with loosened screws on the backing plate and a weak o-ring could. Might be a good time to get into the front end and check the oil pump--and while you're that far in, replace the timing belt, water pump, cam and crank seals, cam shaft o-rings, inspect/change idlers and tensioner. Egads! If you can do your own work it'd be a coupla' hundred bucks well spent. If you have to pay a mechanic I suppose it would be a substantial hit. 'Course maybe a Seafoam treatment (in the crankcase) followed by an oil and filter change might be a good start. Good luck and keep us posted.

Wow, if that engine with that low milage is as good as it sounds you're one lucky guy desertsubaru. I'd be tempted to wash that beautiful hunk of aluminum down, put it on a stand in my living room and just sit back and enjoy it! I know, I know--I'm prejudiced. But at 126k miles my '95 Legacy L is just getting nicely broken in. Such a sweet engine. Enjoy!

Glad you found the problem and solved it. Really hope that no longterm damage was done. Grossgary's suggestion of a flush and fresh ATF is good. Also, it might be wise to put an inline filter, like a Magnefine, in the hose between the radiator and tranny. I enjoyed following this thread on another level too. It's great to be able to help friends and strangers with whatever bits of skills and knowledge we are blessed to have. But it's priceless to be able to help the person who gave each of us more than we'll ever be able to know or appreciate . . . Mom!
