Hey Matt, good to see you here--and thanks again for your experience in tackling those pesky bushings. Yeah, it's a wonderful feeling when that lever slips into position precisely where it's supposed to be. I think the Kartboys and TiC pieces added a great deal to the feel too. 'Course a gearbox full of Red Line NS really frosted the cake! To anyone thinking of tackling their shifter bushings: Go for it! It's not the most pleasant job but it's well worth it.

Yeah, it's actually 4.8 US quarts = 1 Imperial gallon. They figure the Subie diesel at 41-42 mpg US. -

More reading for diesel junkies. It's from January but I just ran across it. http://www.newspress.co.uk/DAILY_LINKS/arc_jan_2008/54510sub.htm -
Old thread answerage: Yeah, that outer roll pin is a real bear isn't it? As I recall it helped to have my son sit in the car and hold the shifter hard in gear (5th I think) so I could get a better bite with the punch, then I just wailed away at it! Eventually the pin loosened up and it popped right out. I remember reading a lot about replacing the pins with a bolt but can't recall the sources. Legacy777 might have talked about it, maybe a search will turn something up. Good luck. Not easy but well worth the effort!

Hi Lolly, welcome to USMB. You came to the right place--these guys really know their Subarus and are the most sharing bunch you'll ever find! 1) Are you asking about the "OE Subaru replacement sensor?" He's referring to the knock sensor (or any sensor in the car). OE or OEM simply means original equipment manufacturer, in other words a "genuine Subaru part" rather than an auto parts store part. 2) I had a high school teacher many (many) years ago whose favorite line was "There's no such thing as a dumb question!" Hey, you were smart enough to ask and that's well above average! 3) Don't know what part of Washington State you live in but call Mike Scarff Subaru in Auburn (near SeaTac) 866-528-5282, and ask for Jason in the parts department. Great guy, very helpful and they've always had the best internet prices I could find. As a matter of fact, they used to own the 1stsubaruparts site. 4) If you get a new knock sensor it's really not too difficult to install--anyone with a ratchet wrench and an extension could do it. In other words, don't let a shop charge you an arm and a leg just to screw it in! 5) Keep smiling. Things will get better! Aloha, and again, welcome.

Can't answer your question bulwnkl but you're right, less diesel than gasoline is captured from a barrel of crude. Nipper's list shows what refiners generally put out and that is something that is market-driven. There are other factors to consider however: 1) The makeup of the crude oil stock--light sweet will yield more light distillates like gasoline than will heavy sour. 2) Refiners can determine the ratio of the final product to a certain degree, and will obviously make as much gasoline as possible to meet current market demands. 3) Diesel contains more potential energy per unit volume than gasoline. 4) Diesel engines operate more efficiently than gasoline engines. I'm really excited by Subaru's decision to make diesels. Can't wait to hear some "real life" reviews of them . . . but I guess that's still a couple of years away! -

I wonder what they'll offer in the US--the 2.0 that they have up and running? Something bigger? Since it's turbocharged the smaller engine certainly has respectable numbers. Just wish Subaru would share more! -
Don't let us sour you on the car, Silverfox. Hey it's a Subaru, right? You say this car is "like brand new" and you like it and you've got a reasonable price going. Do it. Get the car. I feel comfortable saying that (even though I'm a hard-core 2.2-ist) simply because your eyes are wide open. You're aware of what could happen and it sounds like you'd be willing to take corrective action if/when needed. Just be aware of any HG symptoms and have a few dollars set aside for replacement if it becomes necessary. From what I've read here, the new design head gaskets may well solve the problem for the rest of the life of the car. I think most of us are "anti 2.5" because we hate to see some poor soul buy what they think is a wonderful car and then get blind-sided by an out-of-the-blue HG failure. It's your choice of course. Research the car thoroughly, talk to the former owner if possible, check its record with the dealership that cared for it, have an independent mechanic inspect it. But don't let us run you off! Just my $.02. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
