  1. Hi This might be it(funeral services) for the car.... 285k It is a 91 subaru Loyale wagon was hoping I would get to 300k I have the spare parts, so it would just be labor... Here are the details. The rear passenger wheel leans in at the top..... I had to drive at 40 miles perhour... for 200 miles. to get home....... I brought it into the garage...... to check out the problem...... If you want to call it the lower rear cross member... maybe that describes it well enough..... basically this is the part which runs from wheel to wheel and the lower control arms connect to. (when I put jack stands under the car to support the car this is where I hold the car up... It is tubular in shape and hollow.... Well, It snapped... seems to have rotted out from the inside out.... So the question... is... Has anyone ever replace one of these.... basically, the whole rear suspension has to be pulled out. (or a good chunk of it) Like I said, I have an extra one.... just wonder if I should do it...... I am a glutton for punishment..... This can be seen by trying to get 300k out of the car Thanks, Mickytrus
  2. I have had mine rot a ton of times.... They are not that sophisicated......... I can't help you with size.. can't remember... but it is fairly simple job... their is a weird cannister on some of the lines near the pump.. usually the canister rots out..... Just replace it with regular line....... I live in the salt region........ these cars rot out big time......... I use por-15 rust paint on the lines... I sop the whole underneath of the car..... Otherewise I would be replacing this stuff all the time. I even had a fuel pump rot out on me..... that was 400 bucks.... probably 10 years ago.... so I paint everything under there.... fuel lines brake lines suspension.......... Don't give the dealer your money....they don't deserve it.......
  3. Yeah, I took my covers off my 91 a long time ago.. take off the inner one too.. Dont' over tighten the belts. I usually just let spring tension hold the belt.... An over tightened belt will break... Slightly off topic but, a similiar experience.... It had to do with intake gaskets.... It was a 93 sedan that I had... I would put the gaskets on... and the driverside intake would evently spew anti-freeze.. It would take a week or too..... Thought it was me.... I think I did this job three times before posting......... Well, I got it fixed by someones recommendation. THe recommendation was use OEM gaskets. I did... and it didn't happen again...... I am not necessarily saying that is your problem but, I must say parts are not being manufactered as well as they were.. I got water pump bearing going on my 91 (just found out today) great....... I swear I just changed it.... I wish I could find the receipt..... Maybe it was two years ago....... Micky
  4. Ok so I can check for out of roundness of the hub with an outside micrometer. And I should check both, where the inner bearing presses in and the outer bearing presses in... What is the allowable amount of out of roundness..... .003,.005 .007 .010
  5. I have a 91 Loyale and a 93 both are wagons. the 91 got new motor mounts when I redid the car. that was about 5 years ago @ 158k. Now the car has 262. so the motor mounts have about 110K on them. Just recently the exhaust front pipe broke. I still need to fix it... the welds cracked on both parts of the pipe off the heads, where they are welded to the cat. visually, the motor shakes when I rev it. so the idea with bad motor mounts burning wheel bearings is that when the motor is twisting constantly back and forth, back and forth due to the motor mounts this puts stress on the axles as they spin which then places stress on the spinning wheel bearings. Over time it prematurely wears the wheelbearings out... If you drive straight down the road, the wheel bearing is quite.... turn the wheel any slightest amount and you hear the lovely grinding sound...... Some one mentioned possible bad hubs..... can you describe a bad hub. how to determine a bad hub. I replace bearings on the passengerside of the other car the 93 and the inner bearing is toasted now..... It is probably about 15k old. I was even considering the possibility that they are manufacturing these bearing poorly.... So I got some dealer bearings.... It didn't make a difference...... I was even think that the grease is lame............. but I have used this grease in other bearings(but those were tapered roller bearings) really, I am changing wheel bearings more often that I change spark plugs..... Any insight would be greatly appreciated... Micky
  6. Hello, I need to get some motor mounts. Ea82. Loyale 91 and for my 93...... Where is the best place (price)... It eats wheel bearings... inner wheel bearings fail at like 20,000 miles.... I am figuring it is the motor mounts causing this.... Any thoughts...... And what about swapping with a 2.2 Thats EJ motors........ How expensive can that get.... Say you already have the motor for the swap.. Micky:-\

  8. That is cool! Yeah, I hope I can have this one for a little while....... Dumped a ton of cash into it.......... rides and feels like new.... workin' on the smell part....... smells better than the other old subie I was runningg... that one between the leaking window and the rotten flesh from the meat shop on my feet.... uhhhhhhh! pics soon!
  9. Yeah, The car is just about done... It is harder now to finish it, now that It is being used every day..... Spent much of my time working on the car(subie loyal 1991) from February to end of June......... As some of you have been involved in the thinking proccess by answering my questions.... and it has been much appreciated...... There at the end I though I was gonna lose it......!!!!!! First time starting up the car and it wuz blowing more smoke that an opium room from the 1st dynasty................ But all is well.... It is so well!!!!! Begginnning of July I rolled "trixie" off the Jack Stands and drove her from New York to Texas and back in six days round trip.... Covered 14 states in 6 days.... about 3000 miles..... the shocker here is that (160K).. on this pup.... It used only 3/4 of a quart of oil........ and it leaked a little out the oil fill tube where it joins the head(wasn't tightend enough)..... fixed that in virginia... Yeah, I was obsessively checking the oil and checking for leaks the whole ride............. the wife was getting tired of it! she was like don't worry about it.... it is ok.................................. Hey, I finally have a subie that I can change the oil in.......... I don't just add it!!!!!................ she is running like a new car...... Yeah, so back to the name thing......................... the wife and family saw very little of me those months working on the car........ She would always make remarks(joking) you are gonning to go down and spend time with that other woman(referring to the car). So while on the journey to texas..... the brought it up again........ I said, well if your gonna refer to her as "that other woman" then she should a least have a name............ So I thought to myself............ what would be a good name.... that is when it came to me...... to go with the (circa burlesque 1920's-1930's) name............ there the name popped into my head..... Trixie!............. So my Subie has a first name!!!!!!! I'll post some pics of trixie after I get her buffed out and put her trim back on......... anyway, thanks for all the help and insight......   13. I have a strange electrical problem..... seems as though the rear tail lites are always on..... and the liscence plate lite..... always on...... now.... Maybe I didn't notice this initially after I got the motor in.... maybe it has been doing it ever since.................. that point............................ I just didn't notice........ possible............. One thing to mention................ I still have the fenders off.... so the parking lites in the front are disconnected...... I have seen in the past weird stuff happen( with another subie loyale that I have) ... It was when the alternator shipped the bed....... the whole dash lit up like a Christmas tree.......... So what do you think???? I wont have the fenders on for a while.... Hopefully tommorrow but, I still have to spray the hood..... wanted to put that on first...... UHHH hopefully soon get this car done.......... SUpposed to drive to Texas with it next weekend......... Slight road trip... Mickyt

I am in the process of spraying the hood right now...... need to get the fenders on and undercoat it....... so close yet so far............... but. it sounds reassurring that I shoudl be in the clear......   15. Why are you interested in flushing the inside of the motor........? I have heard alot of differing views on this...... the one I stand behind is this: the tolerances in a motor are very small... only several thousanths of an inch on moving parts...... Varnish inside the motor will actually fill spaces that are small ..... and varnish can actually fill in worn spaces on bearings..... because we are talking thousandths of an inch here.... so these flushes can actually remove these deposits(this varnish) that you would not necessarily want to remove... So I would say not to flush the motor with anything.... just be faithful to change the oil frequently...... micky
  16. Well, the subie is running..... ran it the other night.... I still have some things to explore which can only be done by more running.... So as to the issues uncovered at hand so far....... as said early, the vehicle was not idling.... and it was hoofing out anti freeze in the exhaust.... the anti-freeze left a clear greezy puddle on the ground at the tail pipe............ So anyway, As I said I should check some of the emission hoses and sorts before I go diving into taking this motor apart....... too painful.... 172 bucks in OEM gaskets...... Only if I must utterly do so......... It appears as though I had mistakenly crossed some hoses..... The egr was not running into its solenoid... and I didn't have the air suction solenoid going to the manifold......... and the egr mounting bolts we not tightened..... (which I found out after I switched the hoses around)...... well like I said it is running..... and it seemed to be running really fine..... and quiet as hell..... (new timing belt hardware). but, I must still be skeptical......... I am concerned still about all that antifreeze... hoofing when I had all that stuff above mixed up......... I don't have a clear explanation for it........ I am gonna have to just watch it... and I may have an oil leak on the passengers side of the motor.... again ... I will have to watch it..... It could just be power steering fluid that is sitting some where.(very little leak indicated by the cardboard I put under it after I ran it.)... when the motor was out it had leaked out of the reservoir......... I have to add some........... So If someone out there may think they might have an idea why the above problems may have caused or enhanced the antifreeze leak I would surely like to know.............. Micky
  17. Well I have many things to persue this evening.... It is definetly anti-freeze...... coolant somehow getting into the combustion chamber. This is clear by the puddle of greasy "clear spooge"(missing the green dye #3 - also found in many of our foods) that has condensed on the floor below the tailpipe...... I am gonna start with the least painful first.......... I am thinking the throttle body is agood place to start...... and I must make sure that I had put all my hoses on correctly when I did the motor install for the emissions stuff(not to have some how crossed one of those lines with the coolant line/lines).......... I put some late nights in on this car....... so it could have happened......... sometimes long hours put in on something just leads to long hours correcting things....... GOod ol' Ying and Yang................... So I will use your input as I guide to solve the mayhem........ I will let you all know what the end results are as soon as I know.............

Well I got it up to operating temperature(the poor thing) If was strange.... sometimes is spewed more smoke than other times... it wasn't always steady......... well it is getting late here out east..... but.... here is what I think is the clincher......... I think it is an antifreeze leak........... this is why....... I was closing up the shop...(really just a small garage that fits a subie pretty well) but nothing any larger............. and I noticed a puddle from the exhaust............. and I put it in my hands... finger tipsss anddd it was slippery.... just like good ol' anti freeze............. Now the antifreeze level hasn't gone down... well it is really hard to notice......... it is not noticable...... How and what kind of leaks should I check for.......... Should I drain the fluids into clean containers??????? MY BRAND NEW OIL, AND ANTI FREEZE.................... check for cross contamination.................................... What should or how should I go about detecting this...... Again... just to say this pup isn't even idling...... it will idle for about a minute or so than that is it..... Micky

Yeah, the Loyale has that preheat line in the back of the throttle body.... and I wanted just to say that this puppy when it is billowing all this smoke will not idle........... could it be perhaps an intake/antifreeze leak perhaps... tommorrow I will get some more gas and run it out of a pail just for laughs.... I myself am leaning towards the mr freeze..... and a crack.........that is expanding when heat thus causing a leak,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, What is the consensus out there... what do you think????? thanks Micky
  20. yeah, that preheat carby thingie... you mention....... is that the hose to the back of the throttle body??????
  21. Yeah,,,,,,,, it is strange........... I just went out to the car..... you should see this thing.... up on jack stands in the back..no rear tires on it... masked off due to all the painting.. fairly cleaned up engine compartment....... I used 409 on it for cleaner after using the hard core degreaser armor all.......... and billowing smoke...... makes ya' jerk a tear from yo' eye ball!@ So besides all this sentiment.... sorrow and mayhem... here is some more clues to toss about..... The engine sat for about an hour......... so it was definetly cooled off................. I started it up.......... it ran ok for about a minute or two............ then it started acting up again......................................... Hmmm.... Does this sound like maybe a crack in something... (heats up then expands and then starts to smoke.........) What do you think????? I ma gonna let it sit again and cool.... and feed my face for a little while.......................... Micky
  22. Well - white smoke certainly could be coolant. Is it losing coolant? Can you run it long enough to see if the coolant level goes down? A coolant leak big enough to cause a billowing cloud of white smoke shouldn't be terribly hard to locate...... intake manifold gaskets are a good thing to check, but if you don't find it there, check the oil to see if any coolant is mixing with it... that would indicate a HG problem. GD Yeah, it sure as hey is alot of smoke... and that was what I was thinkin... check the coolant level..... it is not noticable that it is going down... but I will say this..... when I turned the car off... from inside the vehicle I noticed the coolant to rise up allmost out of the radiator... I had the cap off during this... run.... then I went out... and a bunch of bubbles rose up to the top at the fill...(blurp,blurp)...... but... I haven't even got this pup up to operating temps..... and it sat on the bench (on sabatical) so maybe that is why she is blurping........ but should it rise like that when the vehicle is turned off????????? How about the bad gas theory... maybe I should buy a piece of hose and run the car out of a pail of freshly laundered gasoline.............. then I can exhaust this bad gas theory........ what do you think?????????

I wish I could say it was that.... the juice slipped in while doing the intake..... but.... the motor was out and disassebled on the bench.... put back together..... sat on the bench for about 3 or 4 months...... oiled it up good..... vaseline in the oil pump...... I squirted a bunch of oil in the cylinders........ schrugg? Yeah, I guess I don't want to resort to ripping it out again... It would be nice to be diagnostic before I rip it out.......... the pain the pain the pain.... It hurts when I think!
  24. sorry ! 91 subie Loyale........ fuel injection...... Smoke is sort of on the white side........ very thick it billows out of the garage....... takes a while to dissipate........
