Thinkin the worst right now!
mickytrus replied to mickytrus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I got it up to operating temperature(the poor thing) If was strange.... sometimes is spewed more smoke than other times... it wasn't always steady......... well it is getting late here out east..... but.... here is what I think is the clincher......... I think it is an antifreeze leak........... this is why....... I was closing up the shop...(really just a small garage that fits a subie pretty well) but nothing any larger............. and I noticed a puddle from the exhaust............. and I put it in my hands... finger tipsss anddd it was slippery.... just like good ol' anti freeze............. Now the antifreeze level hasn't gone down... well it is really hard to notice......... it is not noticable...... How and what kind of leaks should I check for.......... Should I drain the fluids into clean containers??????? MY BRAND NEW OIL, AND ANTI FREEZE.................... check for cross contamination.................................... What should or how should I go about detecting this...... Again... just to say this pup isn't even idling...... it will idle for about a minute or so than that is it..... Micky -

Yeah, the Loyale has that preheat line in the back of the throttle body.... and I wanted just to say that this puppy when it is billowing all this smoke will not idle........... could it be perhaps an intake/antifreeze leak perhaps... tommorrow I will get some more gas and run it out of a pail just for laughs.... I myself am leaning towards the mr freeze..... and a crack.........that is expanding when heat thus causing a leak,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, What is the consensus out there... what do you think????? thanks Micky -

Yeah,,,,,,,, it is strange........... I just went out to the car..... you should see this thing.... up on jack stands in the back..no rear tires on it... masked off due to all the painting.. fairly cleaned up engine compartment....... I used 409 on it for cleaner after using the hard core degreaser armor all.......... and billowing smoke...... makes ya' jerk a tear from yo' eye ball!@ So besides all this sentiment.... sorrow and mayhem... here is some more clues to toss about..... The engine sat for about an hour......... so it was definetly cooled off................. I started it up.......... it ran ok for about a minute or two............ then it started acting up again......................................... Hmmm.... Does this sound like maybe a crack in something... (heats up then expands and then starts to smoke.........) What do you think????? I ma gonna let it sit again and cool.... and feed my face for a little while.......................... Micky -

Well - white smoke certainly could be coolant. Is it losing coolant? Can you run it long enough to see if the coolant level goes down? A coolant leak big enough to cause a billowing cloud of white smoke shouldn't be terribly hard to locate...... intake manifold gaskets are a good thing to check, but if you don't find it there, check the oil to see if any coolant is mixing with it... that would indicate a HG problem. GD Yeah, it sure as hey is alot of smoke... and that was what I was thinkin... check the coolant level..... it is not noticable that it is going down... but I will say this..... when I turned the car off... from inside the vehicle I noticed the coolant to rise up allmost out of the radiator... I had the cap off during this... run.... then I went out... and a bunch of bubbles rose up to the top at the fill...(blurp,blurp)...... but... I haven't even got this pup up to operating temps..... and it sat on the bench (on sabatical) so maybe that is why she is blurping........ but should it rise like that when the vehicle is turned off????????? How about the bad gas theory... maybe I should buy a piece of hose and run the car out of a pail of freshly laundered gasoline.............. then I can exhaust this bad gas theory........ what do you think????????? -

I wish I could say it was that.... the juice slipped in while doing the intake..... but.... the motor was out and disassebled on the bench.... put back together..... sat on the bench for about 3 or 4 months...... oiled it up good..... vaseline in the oil pump...... I squirted a bunch of oil in the cylinders........ schrugg? Yeah, I guess I don't want to resort to ripping it out again... It would be nice to be diagnostic before I rip it out.......... the pain the pain the pain.... It hurts when I think! -

sorry ! 91 subie Loyale........ fuel injection...... Smoke is sort of on the white side........ very thick it billows out of the garage....... takes a while to dissipate........ -
Hello! Yeah, put the 1.8l back in the subie this weekend...... Went rather well... till now............... Don't know what to think.... Don't really want to think the worst but............ it seems sort of eminent............... Anyway, thought the gas was bad...... I drove it home in Feb from the place I purchased it........ it ran ok..... car sat for about a year or so before that........... just like to leak oil................................... I replaced the gaskets in the motor inside and out, top to bottom, bottom to top......... Had the heads resurfaced... Used OEM gaskets.......... Felt like I was doing the right thing.... Had some questions...... sought out answers.... etc... etc.... So........... I thought it might be bad gas.................... drained the tank...... Didn't take out the tank......... so maybe there is still some (bad gas if that is the problem) still in the tank Oh, here is the problem....... It is smoking some thick smoke..... Maybe it is anti-freeze........ I hope not... but lets not be in denile here.......... maybe it is......... the motor is pretty tight now...... maybe it is sucking it in from some crack that was overseen by the machine shop...... I don't know.................................. Lets just say this........... after I drained the gas........... and put in two gallons.... it ran good for about a minute...... I advanced the timing.... still ran good ............ then it started to smoke again.......... and it wont Idle..................... So any clues anything I can check would be greatly appreciated........ Micky

93 loyale power windows (wounded)
mickytrus replied to mickytrus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey, thanks for the input.... I will go with the idea of an open circuit and check for power on the lead to the main window control... I will post the results/findings...... Micky -
The wifie's subie is having a problem with the driver's side power window controller. none of the switches will operate any of the four windows. It does however, still lock the other windows from being rolled up/down. I figured that maybe the driver's side power window controller was bad. The othe windows do work with their window controllers(switches). Hey, I have a workin' spare.... no dice! it is not the controller. So I am asking the usmb gang what is up.............. I haven't checked anything with a volt meter yet........ What would I be looking for in voltage at the terminals on the plug? 12vlts?................................. It seems so strange that all four switches in the controller would all stop working at once. Is there a fusable link somewhere or a relay...... Can anyone provide me with what to trouble shoot? thanks , Micky

I even drempt it had happend... pretty errie..... but.... the stable gas is good and I remember someone I knew using and engine fogger... If anyone can add to this...... It was a product that you use while runing and stall the vehicle out with it....... He liked using it. Micky -
gas tank questions(guts?)
mickytrus replied to iluvdrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, that is a long time for a vehicle to sit....... I have a car that I let sit for about 20 years.......... (inside of course) but I made my mistakes with letting it sit... she is still a cream puff but, would be better if I new the affects.... letting something sit even a year can be costly........... GOt one sitting right now for about four years...... It is on the restoration que......(hopefully it will get the but the Subie I just bought cut the line)........ I would say replace/repair every componant in the fuel system... that shillac gell shizzz will just haunt you... it will contaminate any good gas it touches.............. Also check the brake system throughly.... A cars worst enemy is road salt and salt of that nature but, when a car sits........ it is as bad... -
sko, That is alot of trouble to go through... all that wrapping........... If you're gonna rig it..... I have seen split boots....... They sock (u) but, I think it would be more effective......... also, those joints are spinning and mashing anything that gets in there way...... So I think you can stuff some grease in there and put the split boot on and zipp tie it up.... I remember once I had a joint go bad on a 3 hour trip.... heard it on the way there....... forgot about it till I had to drive back. after 2 hours driving I was pouring engine oil on the joint ocassionally..... turned into a 4 hour trip... micky

Hey Hilux......... What is a shade tree mechanic???????? I sure could have used a few tree's this weekend.. got near 90 degrees here....... I got a farmers tan leaning over the wife's subie... doing a water pump and such......... DOn't even have the project car done yet and I got to rip another one apart................ "piles of tools and piles of parts.... oh! here is a good radiator I'll use that one....... Yeah, the cars were swapping parts like mad." Well, all in all the project car wins......... It won the raffle of the new radiator......" Hope, this car will be kind to me.... Micky -

ea82 timing belt tensioner springs
mickytrus replied to mickytrus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
SO that is good I think I put them on correctly..springs..... Initially, I had that thinner one on the left.... Didn't feel right... SO I switched them........ I have put belts on before but,,,,,,, I don't think I really had a method to tightening them so I would like to hear how you do it.......... And no, I didn't replace the tensioners...or idler....... I checked them for side play... They seemed ok......... How often would you change those pups???? It is hard when it comes to replacing stuff....... I like having the philosophy of "well I am here"""" don't want a have to come back in here an change this out later""""""" but, the old wallet is getting thin..... Hey, hopefully this machine will be a story with a happy ending..... Micky -
My motor has been all over my work bench for the last two or three weeks....... putting it back together now........ just noticed that the tensioner springs... the two of them.... they are not identical... one has less coils and is a little thicker.... same overall length........ anyway, does it matter where they are placed... facing front of motor....... left ,,,,, right....... thick spring for the longer belt????????? Any one know??????

Hi T-wag, T-wag your priv email is full............... Are you still selling gaskets and seals? Wondering about cambox o-rings...... the mating surface (head to cambox)... and what about the three seals for a oil pump.... I am wonder where the third seal goes....... mickeymouse, ok know where that goes........ the impeller one, ok know where that goes...... It is the other one I forget what it was called...... appreciate some feed back Thanks, Micky
-
Yes, one reason l like having 'soobs' is that they appear to be easy to work on........ those parts which may rust or seize due electrolysis(steel bolts in aluminum) I use anti-seize on them............. I use anti-seize on the shroud bolts and the rad-fan to rad bolts......... thermostat etc.......
-
Speaking of pump and pump seal... (mickymouse seal) Is anyone out there familiar with a "non hardening sealer" called "hylomar"........... Could this be used on the mickymouse seal....... and also on the camshaft o-rings ??????? I am looking for something to put on these o-rings.........
-
Where can I by new fenders for my 91 loyale..... They don't have to be OEM......... just decent dent free and inexpensive..... thanks
-
Dude, go to http://www.1stsubaruparts.com... you can call them and get stuff ....... An OEM clutch kit is about 160 for a loyale..... Don't know where you are from but, that to me is a good deal.....(northeast)

That is great! got some of that aviation sealant just picked it up today.......... I'll use that on the threads........ How about the o-rings?????? do you use anything on o-rings????? and for that matter...... the mickey mouse seal?????? and the camcover gaskets/rubbers...... do you install the camcovers dry or use the aviation sealant on them as well???????? Thanks, Micky -
does anyone know what this might be??
mickytrus replied to mickytrus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, that is good information....... As for the bolts....... not using threadlocker........... How about using the permatex aviation sealer on the bolts...... IE: headgasket bolts, cambox bolts, waterpump bolts and the intake bolts..... what are people using on the bolts as a sealer??????????? you know from anti-freeze or oil running up the threads and then leaking out at the head of the bolt...........
