  1. Yeah, they are strange things...... they are on the feed and return.... I also noticed two of them up near the throttle body..... yeah, like your saying maybe vapor dampers....... DO you think that they are really necessary????? mine rotted out................... WHen you look through them they just look like a piece of tubing all the way through.........
  2. HI, I got a subie loyale with a head gasket oil leak.... about 160k..... I am gonna pull it today..... and regasket the motor........ I am little concerned about blow by..... (compression getting past the rings and into crankcase). which can cause excess pressure and give you gasket leaks.. I know that these motors are prone to leaking... and Initially with the help of the forum and people being helpful.... I am gonna just regasket the motor........ Here is the deal........ I got this thing running... right now as we type here....... I just figured let me pull the oil cap off while it is running.... And what I found is excess pressure coming out at the oil fill cap....... I put my hand on it and it is quite abit of pressure... I checked on my other subie.... there is pressure there too but, not as much(this one has 215K and leaks like a pig...(ifpigs can leak?).. So I am concerned............ how much pressure should the be at the oil fill cap........ I know from past experience with other motors..... there shouldn't be any...... NOw keep in mind that this pup here has a bad head gasket.... but I don't think it is leaking compression... I didn't do a compression test............. How should I go about testing this motor for blow by..... any one know....... I do have an engine compression tester...... Can some one out there help me asess this motor.......... I don't want to regasket it and find it has blow by....... I will get it rebuilt if need be.......... or rebuild it myself............ thanks, Micky
  3. This is a pretty good trivia question.... I think of this part as "gas line appendix" looks like they made this part and didn't know what to do with it so they put it there. Personally, to me it looks like it serves very little purpose thus, "gasline appendix" You may already know what I am talking about... they are in the gas line...... they are metal and they are the first thing to rot out in the fuel system thus, need to be removed.... but not replaced..... again..... "the gas line appendix". I think there are two of these perhaps in the fuel line one is right off of the electic fuel pump... 6 " up the line. So I would like to know what the name of this part is and what is its purpose???????? If I need to say more about this part please don't hessitate to ask.... oh, and it is on a subie loyale...... 91,,,, 93 has them too... thanks
  4. That is good to hear......... I figured all that aluminum can't be heavy.... but, I wasn't thinking it was that light....... that is pretty cool...... 150 pounds.... this will be my task this weekend...... hopfully i can bust it out and have time for a life as well....
  5. SO would you day when all is said and done and the motor is ready to be extracted from the engine compartment. two and maybe third set of hands can lean over and wriggle the pup out and set it on a five gallon pail? for a gasket overhaul........
  6. Yeah, I have seen stuff like that too....... Used car dealers, car lots............ cars with 180,00 on them and people wanting 4,000.......... to me that car is used up........ doesn't matter how well you took care it....... some things just wear out........... I like kkb.com and nada.com ...... it actually is a good bargaining piece when you can say that this is what the nations database for sales on a car : says what the car for sale is worth.... It really helps sellers come down to reality..... and if they don't, I won't be the "as% for that seat"
  7. I was wondering..... a 1.8L the ea82 subie loyale motor what does one of these engine pups weigh.......... does the motor weigh 300 lbs.......???? who out there can give me a good poundage on it thanks,Micky
  8. Yeah, I just bought that car.............. leaking head gasket(oil) needs a clutch and an ok bod............................ paid 2 hundred............. for it..... in the northeast........... hopefullly,, all will go well and for about 600 total i'll have a better car than what I am driving now... which some how is the same exact car right down to the color........... el bizaro!... though this one i just got came out of Colorado.... and it seems that maybe it is geared a little different.... So what is your car worth you ask.....????? go to http://www.kbb.com and be as honest as possible... or http://www.nada.com ................ these are blue book sites... These cars hold their value if the are not ailing........ micky
  9. Hey, THanks! Appreciate the tips........ I'll clean the surface with some isopropyl alcohol........... Can anyone reccomend a better surface cleaner............??????????
  10. Hello,,,, again...... My last head job I did..... I had thought that there would be a gasket for this surface I am about to mention......... NOT..... no gasket................ it is the 1.8L 91 loyale................... Here is the description so you can identify the mating surface that I am talking about.... the cam cover bolts to it..... then it bolts to the head.......... So the surface that I am wondering about is the surface that bolts to the head................(cambox to head) No gasket............................... How can I seal this surface........... can I make my own gasket........ what can I do here..... Need some tips and tricks.............. I know on the last head job(also my first[on a subie]) I spooged some permatex on that surface............. this offered very little results........... So what do you subie enthusiasts do ????? Thanks , Micky
  11. Thanks for the info... Yeah, I read another post yesterday... a thread started by someone else...... I am in new york....... we get ripped off on everything over here...... so anyway.... OEM parts goto http://www.1stsubaruparts.com A very cool place So i bought OEM gasket set and a OEM clutch kit......... The OEM KIT at this site was 75 dollars cheaper than an aftermarket kit at a place where I have a charge account... the gasket set was 75 dollars cheaper than the OEM kit at a subie joint over here........: Thanks again internet folk! Micky
  12. Does anyone have any suggestions about gasket manufacturers? I had talked to this one guy a ways back... (subie shop veteran). He said, only use subie OEM gaskets.......... Does anyone out there agree/disagree know of a better manufacturer? The vehicle is 91 subie loyale 1.8L thanks
  13. Thanks, For the info again...... Yeah.... I'll pull the motor and do the heads outside of the car..... that will make my life easier for sure......... My question reagrding leaving the tranny in ...... the vehicle has a standard transmission...... will the input shaft give me any problems on the install... for example no room to slide the input shaft/tranny into clutch assembly/flywheel...... due to small engine compartment.
  14. Hey, Thanks all! The info is good for the brain...../cell......... I'll check the heads for warpage as how was previously described.... I have a carptenters square and feeler gauges... That will be good.................. The cam covers! oh,, yeah... OHC...... Yeah, I guess I was still calling them valve covers for all the damn years.... used to workin' on those cast iron engines........... As for the micky mouse seal... I'll replace that seal..... Looks like i'll do all the front seals and the head gaskets and cam cover and the intake..... It is a tough call where do you stop......... I remember my other subie....... rebuilding the front end..... it was cheap..... but i ended up replacing any of the parts that you would replace....... at the time ... a grand later....... Yeah, I probably need a clutch in this car too....... 160K I think she said it was the original clutch...... Ijust bought it....... It was either me or the junk heap for this pup..... Well, I said it looks better than what I have been driving.... and I won't have to take a bath any more while I drive it while it is raining........... funny thing I bougth the exact same car: year model and even the color.... I got the fancier version now roof racks auto seatbelts...... I seems geared different too... this one came from Colorado......... What do you's think....... makes sense.... northeast isn't like Colorado......... Do these motors and tranies pull out together pretty well??? you know....... pull the motor and the tranny right out up through the engine compartment as one piece???????? Maybe that is what I will do........... and get that clutch while I am at it...... Micky
  15. Thanks, myossfeece. Do you think while I am there.... replacing the head gasket that I should replace the o-ring and the funny looking (gasket/rubber pump chamber seal thingie bob) I don't know the name of the part... but it is in there when you pull out the oil pump........ I figure I will do the camseals and the front seal on the crank... I also was wondering where I will find the camshaft cover that you spoke about... I would like to check and see if this is leaking as well or if this is possibly the cause..... thanks, Micky
  16. Hello, I got a loyale wagon with 160k miles........ the passenger side rear head gasket leaks oil..... I think this also creating a drop in oil pressure when motor revs below 3000rpm. I was figuring on replacing the gasket.... but, I just want some insight as to how to approach the problem.... Accomplishing the work is not the issue... As for I have been working on these puppies for a while now...... The issue is, I don't want to do this twice....... I would like to solve problems not the symptoms. So here is my question..../questions..: Am I wasting my time just replacing the gasket... Should i resurface the head? Is there a laymans way to check the head for warpage? What about Blow by? could the oil leak be caused a result of blow by? How can I check If the motor has blow by? So IF any one out there can provide me with some wisdom regarding approaching the situation... I would be much abliged..... Thanks, Micky
  17. Yeah, I have three of the loyale series vehicles..... The wagons (not in colorado) get 28 local 30 highway.. the sedan get about 30 local 32 highway... From what I understand the motors came with two different horsepowers...... can't remember the exact hp maybe 90 and the other was 110.......... The wagons definetly have more peep.... gets out of its own way...... but yes, they like to leak oil and antifreeze.... but. I find it a nice go-cart to work on.......
  18. if you are lucky, maybe its the o-ring in the CAM BOX, and not the head hasket. try to see which seem the oil is coming from This oil is coming from the passenger's side rear... Where the head mates with the block the lower side... You mentioned an o-ring for oil passage in the head gasket? Where would this be on the head gasket? Is this on the front and rear of the gasket? for the oil to drain back to the oilpan...
  19. Hello, Yeah, I picked up a 91 loyale for a song 160k miles........ I have two others....... but anyway, this one the head gasket leaks oil..... I am gonna replace the gasket.... but, I just want some insight as to how to approach the problem.... Accomplishing the work is not the issue... As for I have been working on these puppies for a while now...... The issue is, I don't want to do this twice....... So here is my question..../questions..: Am I wasting my time just replacing the gasket... Should i resurface the head? Is there a laymans way to check the head for warpage?
