  1. I am just doing finishing tweaks on my swap: 1987 GL wagon 4" SJR lift 15" AA rims Rear disk swap EA82 FI fuel pump 1999 Impreza Outback Sport donor: Phase II EJ22 Y-pipe, cats 2.25" cat-back exhaust with resonator and Borla Pro XS EJ harness with EJ Main and Fuel Pump relays and computer EJ Main Fuse box powering Chassis
  2. the EJ and EA82 fsm's aren't very clear on alternator wiring. I had to do a lot of research, too, to find out how to hook it up. Black/White EJ alt wire to light bulb or about 100 ohm 10 watt resistor. I also ran mine through the "charge" fuse in the EA82 fuse box.
  3. Thanks. I always enjoy your contributions and work, as well. I am now able to 2 wheel drive up stuff I used to have to be in 4 low for. I got my skid plate on and can now relax on this one.
  4. Looks great. The white light refreshes those old gauges. I saw your oil pressure at 4000 rpm. Classic EA82 engine and gauge reading.
  5. Good call. The main big white wire does the job of the yellow wire, as well in certain alternators. The black/white wire still need the resistance of a light bulb to enable the alternator field coils. Since I have a voltage gauge, I just put a resistor in, but you could do a charge light. It's just a little more work.
  6. Nice, guys. You see how the filament is more forward in the 9104's. That is exactly how the HID's I got switch between high- and low-beam. They move the bulb forwards and backwards about 0.75 cm. This leads me to believe that when running 9104's that the light is just being focused differently and possibly equally as much a nuisance as crappy blue HID's, less the crappy, useless color. Also, Mykey, I hear ya on the projectors... My HID experience will be a learning one, and I'm not opposed to going back to halogen. At $50+ I had to try it.
  7. Yes, I had issues getting the 2-wire plug interfaced correctly. It's detail in my build thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=129186&page=2 -Yellow wire should get battery power (voltage regulator reference voltage). -Black/White should connect to 10Watt 100 Ohm resistor in place of a charge light bulb and then to switched power. I guess you could use an actual light bulb of similar resistance. If there is no resistance there, the alternator will put out only 1 or 2 volts. It took me a while to figure this out. This wire powers the field coils. -BIG heavy gauge white wire(s) to 80Amp fuse to battery. Read my thread to see how it all came together.
  8. Nice. I like the newer style dash trim. I just saw that on a gl-10 the other day. I picked up a nice 4500K HID kit for cheap at http://www.ddmtuning.com. I'll install it tomorrow and report back. It will be aimed well and not a nuisance.
  9. I relocated the radiator overflow tank to where the charcoal canister used to be on the 1987 GL.
  10. I'll check on that... Here are some test run pics Last thing is skid plates...
  11. It would work straight, but be under tension constantly.
  12. Good call. The angle of observation is a little off. In that pic it may be the trans mounts, but it has new ones when I made the pitch stopper. Hmmm.
  13. The engine/trans are lined up correctly. I'm not really sure why there is an offset. Maybe the EJ bracket isn't designed to be centered or is off center when it bolts to the EA trans. Or maybe the EA pitch stopper bracket on the firewall is not centered. Everything else measure out to be fine.
  14. Hey man, what ever happend with your GL? I just finished my EJ swap.
  15. Yeah, this muffler pitches down a tiny bit, but the guys did such a great job on the rest of the exhaust that I can't complain too much. They even made a nice 1/4" strap from the back end of the trans to the 2nd cat.
  16. Exhaust is done and is documented below. I Also, shortened the pitch stopper. Oh yeah, and pics of the rear disk setup. Oh yeah, and new transmission mounts. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showpost.php?p=1133355&postcount=70
  17. I'm finally getting to the final touches of the swap. Exhaust is done and is documented below. I Also, shortened the pitch stopper. Oh yeah, and pics of the rear disk setup. Oh yeah, and new transmission mounts. See pics and descriptions: Before: After: Pitch Stopper, firewall to transmission mounted EJ braket: Exhaust Parts: Stock Y pipe, shortened from flange to first catalytic converter: Nicely tucked up into trans cross member hump for old exhaust with new pipe to the 2nd catalytic converter: 2.25" pipe back to the muffler: 14" cheapo Resonator: One Borla Pro XS muffler, very quiet: Tail pipe tacked in place and clamped, in case I want to change design some time: Crappy bumper and sticker that's been on there since I bought the car:
  18. I'll post some pics up on my swap thread later this week. I'd go with no resonator and just the Borla Pro XS, unless you like REALLLLY QUIET exhaust. I know... it's all subjective... Search for "1999 Phase II EJ22 into 1987 GL Wagon". Maybe for tomorrow morning.
  19. Exhaust is installed. I thought about doing it myself but this one I left to the experts. I used to take state vehicles to these guys to fix up. They did a great job on my soob. I had them cut each cat off and reposition them so they tuck into the hump in the EA82 transmission crossmember. This raised them a few inches out of the way of pesky rocks and mountain lions. I'll post pics when I have time to take some this week. Initial reaction: Is it really that quiet? I wanted it quiet, but it's more than I expected. I put a free flowing resonator in and that Borla Pro XS straight through muffler on, as per my design. The tone of the Borla is AWESOME. Best muffler I've ever heard, though I can barely hear the exhaust. I like it that way, but I think it would also be nice to hear it rip once in a while. I guess it will be great on long trips. The low end torque has noticeably improved with the addition of the cat-back exhaust, and the high end still pulls well. I'll run it and if it gets old to hear my wheels slap the pavement, I'll loose the resonator. Hopefully there will be more gravel slapping than pavement slapping.
  20. Nice. My partner and I try to do that almost every weekend in CO. I just got the resonator and Borla Pro XS muffler on the EJ swap, today:brow:. I really like the tone, but I can't believe how quiet it is. If anyone is doing a cat-back on an ej and wants a little tiny bit of volume, omit the resonator and definitely get this muffler. The tone is amazing.
  21. New transmission mounts on the '87 GL. I think it raised the transmission a whole inch.
  22. Thanks for the info. My start but no run issue turned out to be chassis ground to the battery/engine, or lack of one. Once everything was grounded properly the engine ran flawlessly, and still does. It seems there was no good path from the chassis to battery ground, but there was for the engine through the starter. The computer was grounded to the engine but not the chassis, but some things it controled like fuel pump, tach signal, main relay, etc... were grounded to the chassis. Who know what it really was or how it was effecting the computer, but that was the solution.
