Ball joints, all bearings. and brakes. Include lower rubber lines, and all rubber hoses under the hood. Have the radiator boiled out. Change the fuel filters (2 I keep spares) Check tires and spare. Reboot and grease axles. Be prepared to talk to alot of Old Dudes when you stop. I always carry a small tool box, and couple radiator clamps, and water everywhere I travel. Have fun.

Body repair / welder question
ironworkerboomer replied to ErikAnderson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes you can that is what there made for, thin metal. Just practice on some scrap to get the settings right. The wire is as important as the welder so go to a good welding shop and tell them what you got and what you want to do. And let the sparks fly my friend. -
No the rims I wanted were steel wheel 14 inch. every one I fit was to tight, rubbed on the torsion arm. Now 15 inch rims seemed to stick out alot more but I was stuck on the 14's. So I just made what I could find fit.

Gen 1 rear suspension bushings

This is my next project, so please post any parts you find that will work. -
This is a standard 6 lug wheel, and as most of them the back spacing is too tight to the inside. I got the rims and tires super cheap So I cut and moved to the spacing I needed.
-
I used a piece of pipe and an old hub, welded pipe to the main pipe to support the rim with the back spacing I wanted measure about a hundred time and welderup.

build a jig it doesn't have to be perfect. These thing will never see 100mph

I will have to get the photo of the bearing press I used. Another Hellbilly invention that all can benefit from.

New wheel bearings, tie rod ends, and ball joints A arm and trailing arm bushings I had to cut the small end off these to fit they were a generic bushing set from Auto parts but fit like a glove when cut

Hub stripped on trail
ironworkerboomer replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
OK Hellbilly fix on axle which was junk and hub even more junk. I ground two flat spots in axle opposing each other.. and welded two spots on hub several passes and ground down with die grinder. Oh I tried to drill into both but could only get about 1/2 inch before it hit the tempered steel. I will update as I drive it on the trail. So thanks to several members here I have the right fix with the right parts so no harm no foul on this lil experiment. Just exploring for the day when no replacements are available, and I still hope to be wheeling SubaRude then. Peace to all and may the trail never end.- 8 replies

You must be living right. Good score my friend. -
I too love my Baja. Block heaters will not be like operating temp, but it will be much warmer than 27 when you start you have liquid oil not syrup. I prefer the magnetic oil warmer in my gas vehicles. I can plug it in an hour before I want to start and oil is ready. Car warm up is faster also. Just my $.02

Hub stripped on trail
ironworkerboomer replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
The only way the metal would change would be from heat from a seized bearing, or PO with a torch (and I have seen that), trying to remove the axle. The biggest reason is not checking the torque on the nut. Not installing the cotter pin ect. IMO.- 8 replies

I was asked to do a write up on the hub that stripped out. We were in the hills above Banning, mostly trail. It's a beautiful close place to waste some time. OK I noticed on a steep grade a popping noise, it was loud enough for me to hear (I'm near deaf) when we got to top I looked it over and the axle nut had backed off and the axle could turn inside the hub. No Buenos! I had the torque on all axles at 150lbs but had not noticed anything odd when driving. So now I will check before each trip. I limped back with rear wheel drive Please add any of your experiences with this problem for the search button.
