  1. The FWD light should be on in dash when the fuse is in. Remove it and see if you have AWD if so was probably a torque-bind problem that was being bi-passed. If so wire the fuse to a switch in the cabin so you can control front wheel/all wheel when you need it. And GrossGary's questionnaire above would be helpful for a fix.
  2. I had my son give the threaded column (with nut out to the end) a whack with a brass hammer while I pulled on wheel it popped off easy.
  3. LOL We live in a 38ft fifth wheel most of the year so we are used to being close. I would love to go back again this winter so I will give you a heads up.
  4. We had a blast in Calico last weekend. Brat worked perfectly. We went on every trail except the canyon gate keeper. I didn't have enough clearance to even attempt it. Took a very modified jeep to do that one. On to the photos firewood for camp everyone had to try the jump seats canyon I drove in this one I'm the only one that would fit
  5. I,ve thought of making a cab over type out of fiberglass but time and money have always been an issue. Too many project and too little time at home.
  6. Thanks for the feedback brother. She sounds like a dog yikin when you turn on pavement
  7. While we were up in northern Cali visiting in-laws the tailgate on Baja quit on me. It was a pain lifting the cooler and luggage up and over so I wanted it fixed. Searched here Google and with little patience for that just jumped in here is the steps to a functioning tailgate, 25 torx bolts on the plastic liner removed gently pull the liner until it pops out of the ends. Or you can get at the inner cover bolts remove the inner cover reach in and put the rod back in the hole to open gate Mine was a broken plastic keeper and of course no one had one. So to me it looked like a throttle rod keeper. It wasn't quite long enough so I cut the first clip part off It worked perfect after a little tri flow lube. I hope this helps.
  8. Trip south went well. Weber is performing like a champ. Lincoln locker is amazing in the hills.
  9. Test drive went better than expected. This Brat is a mountain goat. http://vid564.photobucket.com/albums/ss90/68boomer/IMG_1374.mp4
  10. If you have to lengthen the driveline just take it to a shop and have it done. The cost is minimal, and it will be balanced. If it isn't balanced you will get serious vibration and joint failure, or worse. I have shortened them before and then had them balanced, but the cost wasn't that much cheaper.
  11. Gas tank was seriously nasty with rust on the inside. It wasn't as noticeable when wet. Getting ready for Calico desert trip I wanted to clean it up while I can get it out easy. Tried to rinse and dump but it was too far gone. I'm thinking of making my own fuel cell, but not enough time. So a serious boil out, and see what happens. Muriatic Acid and hot water, with 6000 BB's for the scrubbing agent. Then used baking soda and water to rinse. Bottle of heat to get any remaining moister out the next day. Happy with the outcome all back in. Used three coats Cold Galvanize to finish. Disclaimer: I am not advocating you do this! I have been properly trained in the safe handling of toxic chemicals. Very dangerous products were used! all PPE was used. No animals, environment, or feelings were harmed during this process. And an ice cold Coors lite was on hand to dilute any contact with skin, if it should occur.
  12. No its a life sized steel Joshua tree in my buddies shop.
  13. Same center on wheel just changed the back spacing. Cody is always helping some times it takes three times as long but always getting better. And he is learning how to do it on his own. Already talking about his Brat he is going to get. He likes 2nd Gen, well you cant win em all interior is pretty bad but ill get some

  15. You are probably right I drove it about 1000 miles and she sat all last winter. So plan b I pulled the motor yesterday and she now has a transplant. I have to get oil and antifreeze and a few odds and ends that will have to wait till we get to Cali my wife is towing her with the Baja ill get pics when we are traveling. cleanup pull the motor Idaho style my accomplice Uncle Lyle took a break and went fishing Steelhead Levi shows up everyone with a 30 inch native 90% done
  16. Update. I drilled and tapped the water jacket pipe plug with two part epoxy I am not getting a drop of water through there anymore. So upon further searching 2 and 4 head gasket is leaking. I must have did something wrong when I changed them its been 3 years with no trouble. So enough crying, I got a motor from mcgarvey2001 Cool guy by the way. Motor cleaned and ready to swap I will rebuild my stock one in due time. Getting ready to go south for the winter so I will post pics when I can.
  17. Yes a Proud member local 118 Sacramento. Apprenticed local 29 Portland moved for a better retirement. Still call Idaho home and where I'll retire (5 years if the creek don't rise) I drive through Wyoming from time to time I'll give ya a shout we can have a beer.
  18. Beautiful wagon thanks for the video. Always loved wheelin Walker Valley.
  19. Toppers are a pain and costly to ship but depends on if someone has to have it, last one I gave away. Jackmans if they are 14's $200 easy. side windows I'd Ebay. 79 get her running and Ebay. This is just my opinion. I'd pay $600 for the lot but i'm a hoarder not a seller.
  20. I tried to wash the seat cover material on a 79 wagon once and it fell apart. Just clean as good as you can with rag and cleaner be careful not to soak the foam you don;t want it to get moldy/musty.
  21. Ok subscribed! Nice brat to start with you have a long road of work ahead don't get burned out. This project deserves to be done. I was born and raised in Kalispell (kowsbell is what we always called) but left along time ago. I like the winters in Salmon much better the sun actually shines here in the winter. I do miss Moose's pizza though.
  22. Thanks for the reply jonas Yes I have the adapter plate. Checked the flatness of the manifold, its Good. JB weld, I was worried the fluid still needed to flow from side to side. Thanks I've read it EA82 It is a little different, but good information here. I still wasn't able to get shellack to work and asked if I had to go to the pains of tig welding this thing up. Loyale did an amazing job documenting his. Thanks for that. Great idea spazomatic this will be my next attempt at a fix. This will let the water still flow in the right locations , I hope? I am going to go home in a few weeks to gather my family Brat included to come back to LA I have the next year to work on it. I will post photos and update this thread.
  23. OK I'll keep this simple as I can. I got a long overdue vacation, so we go home. My Brat was looking sad with foot tall weeds all around her, i drug it up the the garage, and threw a charger on the battery and a couple gallons of fresh gas in the tank. pulled the plugs and gave a few squirts of marvel mystery oil in cylinders. 30 minutes bumped the starter and fired right up yea, I'm thinking quick oil change and air the tires and off to the woods we go with a cooler of beer and a tent. Well the Brat decided a tantrum was in order as soon as I bumped the skinny pedal of high idle she died. I've been fighting this dang cr*ptachi carb for ever. SOOOO change fuel filters, pull carb clean the snot out and re-installed, pull, clean, repeat. Now she won't start at all! Later that night in a whiskey bent rage pulled carby and threw it over my fence, got on flea-bay and ordered a Weber (this part was a blur to be honest) it arrived red label express to my house much to my surprise and the not so happy look on the misses face. Note to self: never order parts while 3.5 sheets to the wind! The shipping was pricey to say the least. But on with the drama, I was out the door to do the transplant. Neighbor stopped by to see if I needed/wanted the carb I threw in his yard. I meant to throw it over the south fence into the abyss of weeds never to be seen again. I told him to throw it in the scrap pile for me, as I didn't want to taint myself with touching it again. Swap went easy as pie (so I was thinking) plugging off now un-needed vac lines and such. well the moment off truth start up. Started, ran like a hit and miss engine . OK checked and adjusted timing, and vacuum leaks, ect. Now I notice she is running hot not pegged but 3/4 up there grabbed the hose and cool the radiator to get temp down shut her off. What now I'm thinking! My wife brings me out a Michelada and a sandwich, she is a very forgiving woman. Back to Brat opened the radiator cap and low water. Great head gasket my brain screams (that's how I got her from PO with blown gaskets) My uncle stopped over, he has been a subie addict since they started importing them (he is 80 and you should see his mint hatch) asked if I got a good seal on the manifold gasket? Umm yea, well maybe< I pull off the carb and look at the gasket it looked like it sealed put it back together and started her up. Here is where you think all is good right, no. running even rougher I'm pulling plug wires one at a time to see where the dead cylinders are. 2 and 4 and suddenly noticed I'm i a cloud of steam from the exhaust. Light bulb, no seal on manifold. Shut her down walked away in disgust, ended up hanging out with my uncle and a bottle of Wisers. Over the next couple of days tried to get a good seal on manifold but, no. I looked at my order and it said EA81 adapter. I have read "the Weber thread" and searched. Do I need a EA82 manifold? What is a good fix to delete the open water jacket? Does it still need to circulate through? Or can I fill it with epoxy? I didn't want to go through the expense of Tig welding, and machine work but what ever. Vacation over running all over the country now, but starting a new project in LA, unfortunately not Lower Alabama but the other one. I am going to tow Brat down there with me so I can keep wrenching and hopefully drive her again. Sorry no current photos phone took a dump and deleted all. Thanks for the venue to vent, and ask questions, and the support of this community to keep these awesome sometimes un-cooperating vehicles alive.
  24. Cali ain't as wild west as it once was but you take photos of someones car stash when they won't answer the door and you may get to see they still have a Colt .45 and not a cold one if ya know what I mean. +1 for leaving a note
